The Marvels opens in first but deliver a low for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvels

While it shouldn’t be a surprise that The Marvels opened in first place at the weekend box office, the film was the lowest opening for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film debuted with an estimated $47 million domestically, short of Ant-Man‘s 2015 opening of $57.2 million. Internationally, the film did about the same with $41.5 million for a worldwide debut of $88.5 million. It continues a string of misses for Disney, while even taken into account the shift in viewing post-pandemic, is struggling at the box office overall. It also will add fuel to the recent backlash and negativity towards Marvel as a whole that the film studio and its comic publishing counterpart need to course correct and find a new and better path.

In second place was Five Nights at Freddy’s after two weeks in first place. The movie added $9 million to its domestic total bringing that to $127.2 million. Internationally, the movie added $21.3 million over the week to bring that total to $124.7 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $251.9 million after three weeks.
