Frozen II Threepeats at the Weekend Box Office

Frozen II

It should be no surprise, Frozen II won the weekend box office again with an estimated $34.7 million to bring its domestic total to $337.6 million. The film also added $90.2 million internationally to bring that total to $582 million. It’s a sure thing the film will cross the billion-dollar mark, the eighth film in 2019 to do so. Disney has released six of those.

In second place was Knives Out which earned an estimated $14.2 million to bring its domestic total to $63.5 million. It also added $18.7 million internationally to bring that total to $60.6 million for a global total just shy of $125 million. It opens in Brazil on December 12, Germany on January 2, and Japan on January 31.

Ford v Ferrari took third place earning an estimated $6.5 million to bring its domestic total to $91.1 million.

Queen & Slim took fourth place also with $6.5 million. Just $7,000 separated it and third place. Domestically, the film has earned $26.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood with an estimated $5.2 million to bring its domestic total to $43.1 million.

The top five was a repeat in order compared to the previous week.

In notable movie news, Playmobil: The Movie tanked with one of the worst openings of the year. The movie earned just $660,000 from 2,337 theaters. It’s the third-worst opening average for a film opening in 2,000 or more locations at $282. What’s interesting is the film was picked for domestic distribution after Global Road filed for bankruptcy in 2018. The studio decided to go with variable pricing for the film including a $5 a ticket experiment. It was to encourage audiences to see the fil and allow theaters to explore the concept for first-run movies. It clearly didn’t help.

In comic film news….

Joker held steady at #10 adding an estimated $1.04 million to its domestic total bringing it to $332.1 million.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into 2019’s comic films.
