Wonder Woman Wins the Box Office Again While The Mummy Shows a Little Life

Wonder Woman topped the domestic box office earning an estimated $57.2 million to bring its domestic total to $205 million. The film also earned $58.1 million from 57 markets to bring its worldwide total to $435.2 milion after two weeks. The film had a budget of $149 million so with that amount it’s doing quite fine as far as profit (even taking into account marketing budget). When all is done, the film will be one of the bright spots of the year.

Coming in second place was The Mummy starring Tom Cruise which earned an estimated $32.2 million, below the predictions. While domestically that might be a dissapointment, internationally the film did very well with a reported $141.8 million for a total of $174 million. That’s Cruise’s largest worldwide opening ever. With a budget of $125 million the film’s success will be on the shoulders of the foreign box office. The question will be how this opening will impact future films in the “Dark Universe” group of films of which Bride of Frankenstein will be next.

In third place was Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie which brought in an estimated $12.3 million to bring its domestic total to $44.6 million and worldwide to $45.4 million.

In fourth place was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales which brought in an estimated $10.7 million to raise its domestic earnings to $135.8 million and worldwide now stands at $528.8 million. Again, this is a film that’ll be saved at the foreign box office though with a hefty $230 million budget its earnings are a little less impressive.

Rounding out the top five was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which brought in $6.2 million to bring its domestic total to $366.4 million and worldwide to $828.3 million.

When it comes to other comic adaptations….

Logan added about $100,000 to its domestic total over the week.

The LEGO Batman Movie added about $140,000 to its domestic total over the week.

Smurfs: The Lost Village added about $4 million to its worldwide total over the week.

We’ll be back in an hour for a further dive into comic based films this year.

Next weekend sees the release of Cars 3 which will likely take the top spot but also expect All Eyez on Me to do well if the film gets a good word of mouth.

Wonder Woman is Wonderful With a Record Setting Opening

Wonder Woman set a record opening with $103.3 million domestically and $228.2 million worldwide beating predictions (though meeting ours of $100 million). The film is the largest opening for a female-directed feature as well as the largest opening for a female-led comic book adaptation. It’s the 16th largest opening for a comic adaptation all-time and the sixth if you don’t count sequels.

The film earned $38 million in China what was better than Man of Steel, Thor, The Avengers, and Guardians of the Galaxy. The film still has to open in France (this week), Germany (June 15), Spain (June 23), and Japan (in August).

Wonder Woman was driven partially by positive reviews and word of mouth. The film earned an “A” CinemaScore and that positive word of mouth no doubt helped push it across the $100 million mark. The film’s audience was 52% female and 14% of the audience was under the age of 18 and 47% over the age of 35. With a budget of $149 million (lower than previous DC films), this will easily make a profit and then some.

Coming in second place was Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie which earned an estimated $23.5 million. That amount is mixed as it beat the studio prediction but was lower than what others projected. It is low for a DreamWorks Animation film. That film earned a “B+” CinemaScore, was 54% male and 65% under the age of 25. Of those under the age of 25 60% were boys and 91% of the audience ranged from ages 7-12. This film’s long term success will rely on there being no competition for kids in the coming weeks.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales dropped to third earning $21.6 million to bring its total to $114.6 million. Worldwide the film has earned $501.2 million so the film isn’t a disaster even with a $230 million budget.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 came in fourth place with $9.7 million. The film’s domestic total is at $355.5 million and worldwide the film has earned $816.6 million.

Rounding out the top five was Baywatch which earned $8.5 million. The film has earned $41.7 million domestically and $67.2 million worldwide. With a budget of $69 million, the film made need some CPR.

In comic film news….

The LEGO Batman Movie added about $230,000 to its total over the week.

Smurfs: The Lost Village added about $180,00 to its total over the week.

Logan added about $4.8 million to its total over the past week, primarily at the foreign box office.

Next week sees the launch of Universal’s Dark Universe with Tom Cruise’s The Mummy. I’d predict Wonder Woman will remain at the top of the box office driven by word of mouth. We’ll be back in an hour taking a deeper dive into 2017’s comic adaptations.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Wins the Weekend with Mixed Results

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales easily won the weekend with $62.2 million beating the competition by a mile. While it won the weekend, the film didn’t do all that well considering the fact it has a reported budget of $230 million. But, the film did earn $208.4 million at the foreign box office for a total of $270.6 million. It did set a record in Russia  for an opening.

The film received an “A-” CinemaScore from the opening day audience and was 53% male and 65% over the age of 25. 72% of all showing were in 2D. With so many blockbusters coming in the following weeks, this will be a tough battle to make a decent profit. Its future will mostly be in the hands of the foreign box office.

Dropping to second place was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which earned an estimated $19.9 million domestically bringing its total to $333.2 million. Worldwide the film has earned $783.3 million.

Another new film, Baywatch, came in third place for the weekend. The film earned an estimated $18.1 million. With a budget of $69 million, that’s not a disaster but the film will have to do well at the foreign box office. The R-rated film received a “B+” CinemaScore and was 52% female with 55% of the overall audience 25 years or older.

As expected, Alien: Covenant dropped hard earning just $10.5 million in its second weekend. That’s a 70.9% drop. The film has earned $57.3 million domestically and $158.4 million worldwide. With a budget of $97 million, the film should make a small profit when it all wraps up.

Wrapping up the top five was Everything, Everything which earned an estimated $6.2 million. The film has earned $21.5 million so far with a $10 million budget.

When it comes to other comic adaptations…

Logan came in at #27 earning $106,000. The film has earned $226.1 million domestically and $607.5 million. It, along with Deadpool, that you can do comic action films with smaller budgets and make a healthy profit.

We’ll be back in an hour with even more coverage of 2017’s comic adaptations and later this week we’ll have a review of Wonder Woman which debuts this week and definitely win the weekend box office.
