In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the original release, the Breathtaker creative team has been fully reunited for a weekend of panels, signings, and exclusives. Comic legends Mark Wheatley, Marc Hempel, Kathy Mix, Mike Gold, and Walter Simonson (writer of the stunning new introduction) will all be on hand to unveil the definitive edition of Breathtaker, newly restored and expanded for Titan Comics.
More than just a reprint, this deluxe edition includes nearly 80 pages of new content, behind-the-scenes material, and the all-new comic story Make Way for the Man — a gripping origin tale of the Breathtaker Device. This thrilling prequel will also be available in a convention-exclusive standalone comic debuting at Baltimore Comic-Con.
Fans can also look forward to a pop-up art show at the convention, showcasing a portion of Marc Hempel’s and Mark Wheatley’s original Breathtaker artwork from the Norman Rockwell Museum touring exhibition. This marks a rare opportunity to experience the ground-breaking visuals that helped define the original series, up close and in person.

Mark Wheatley is an Eisner, Inkpot, and Golden Lion award-winning creator whose credits include Frankenstein Mobster, EZ Street, Return of the Human, and Hammer of the Gods. His work spans from the Robert E. Howard Foundation book covers to TV (CBS’s The Millers, 2 Broke Girls) and even Lady Gaga’s stage design.
Marc Hempel is known for his iconic work on The Sandman with Neil Gaiman, as well as Gregory, Tug & Buster, and Naked Brain. His art has graced the pages of MAD, Heavy Metal, Disney Adventures, and The Escapist.
Mike Gold, co-founder of First Comics and longtime DC Comics editor, has helped launch fan-favorite series such as Jon Sable Freelance, The Question, American Flagg!, and GrimJack. A recipient of the Hero Initiative Humanitarian Award, Gold is a fixture in comics and broadcasting.
Kathy Mix, an original Insight Studios member, and Walter Simonson, legendary creator of Thor and Manhunter, round out this historic reunion, each contributing to the anniversary celebration in meaningful ways.

Mark Wheatley
An Eisner, Inkpot, Golden Lion, and Overstreet Hall of Fame honoree, Mark Wheatley is the multi-talented creator behind Frankenstein Mobster, EZ Street, and Radical Dreamer. He’s contributed art and storytelling to properties as wide-ranging as Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Ultraman, and Lady Gaga, and his work has appeared in print, television, film, and museum exhibitions.
Marc Hempel
Acclaimed for his art in The Sandman (notably “The Kindly Ones”), Gregory, and Tug & Buster, Marc Hempel’s stylized, emotionally resonant work has appeared in MAD, Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, and Nickelodeon Magazine. He brings both wit and gravity to every panel—and fans can expect plenty of both at the convention.
Mike Gold
A key architect of modern comics publishing, Mike Gold is the co-founder of First Comics and the former editorial director of DC Comics. He edited and developed titles like Jon Sable Freelance, GrimJack, The Question, and American Flagg!, and played a vital role in shaping Breathtaker for its original release. He is also the head of arrogantMGMS and a recipient of the Hero Initiative Humanitarian of the Year Award.
Kathy Mix
An original member of Insight Studios, Kathy Mix has long been a behind-the-scenes force in the creation and production of Insight’s comics and visual projects. She’s been integral to the development of Breathtaker and many other studio efforts, and fans will get a rare chance to meet her in person.
Jennifer Rouse
Composer, sound designer, and voice-over artist, Jennifer Rouse has worked on films, audio dramas, and multimedia productions. Her credits include Songs of Giants, The Death of Poe, and the Frankenstein Mobster audio drama. She brings a unique creative voice to the Insight team, where her musical and dramatic sensibilities amplify the group’s storytelling power.
Glenn Hauman
A long-time Insight ally and the publisher behind ComicMix, Glenn Hauman is a writer, editor, technologist, and activist. His work in comics and digital publishing has helped bring independent creators to the forefront while supporting transformative industry shifts. At Baltimore Comic-Con, he’ll be celebrating both the past and future of creator-owned comics.

ITHACON has revealed the many guests coming to the convention taking place on April 27th and 28th. They’ve already announced that Shelly Bond will be participating, but there are a number of other industry giants holding panels and manning booths from start to close.
Known to some as “Weezie,” Louise Simonson will be joining ITHACON and speaking on panels such as The Legacy of Superman, alongside other special guest Roger Stern.
Simonson is best known for her work on ”X-Factor”, ”New Mutants”, and ”Superman: The Man of Steel”, as well as ”Steel”. Walt Simonson, Louise’s husband and creator credited for rejuvenating the Thor series, brings to ITHACON his experience working on Marvel Comics like The Mighty Thor and X-Factor —the latter being a joint project with Louise.
Mike Gold is an American comics writer, editor and publisher. He worked as Group Editor and Director of Editorial Development at DC Comics, and co-founded both First Comics, and the National Runaway Switchboard for which he was also the Director of Communications. Gold will be joining Shelly Bond and Tom Peyer on a panel to discuss their time as editors in the industry.
J.G. Hertzler is best-known for playing Chancellor Martok on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Alcalde Ignacio De Soto in Zorro. Hertzler has an incredible amount of industry experience, ranging from guest appearances on numerous TV shows, to lending his voice for video games and film characters, and even audio book recordings for Barsk: The Elephant Graveyard, and its sequel.
Philip Bond originally worked in the British alternative comic scene, first publishing the ‘Atomtan’ series. He’s known for Bond went on to draw for the seminal Deadline magazine, and created a few titles there before having selections of his work featured at DC/Vertigo and ultimately transitioning to work fully in the US, with his wife Shelly Bond.
Roger Stern co-published a popular fanzine publication, Contemporary Pictorial Literature back in the 1970s that led to the formation of Charlton Bullseye magazine. For ten years, he was the senior writer of the Superman titles for DC Comics. Now, he’s known for his writing contributions for radio, television, and the stage —creating scripts for everything from sketch comedy to flash-animation. Stern has written hundreds of stories about such diverse characters as Green Lantern, Supergirl, Starman, the Atom, and the Justice League for DC Comics; and Spider-Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, and the Avengers for Marvel.
Also joining the convention is Chris Condon: the writer of ongoing Image Comics series THAT TEXAS BLOOD with artist J acob Phillips, along with its Wild West spinoff, THE ENFIELD GANGMASSACRE that was selected as one of the best comics of 2023 by The Hollywood Reporter, The Comics Journal, CBR, and The Comics Beat. He has also written for DC, Marvel, Z2, AfterShock, Mad Cave and Dark Horse.
Lastly, Emmy and Ringo-award winner Dean Haspiel will also be in attendance this year. Not only did he create Billy Dogma and The Red Hook, he also illustrated for HBO’s Bored To Death, is a Yaddo fellow, a playwright, and helped pioneer personal webcomics. His published work includes writing and drawing for Marvel, DC/Vertigo, Archie, Image, and Webtoon on comics such as The Fox, Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, Deadpool, Superman, Batman ’66, Wonder Woman, and Godzilla.

Torunn Grønbekk is a Norwegian comic book writer and portrait painter. She is best known for her work for Dynamite and Marvel, like Red Sonja, Thor, Punisher: War Journal,Valkyrie, and Venom. She lives and works in Norway (and sometimes in her cabin in the Swedish woods).
She is currently working on Realm of X, Venom,Red Sonja and the upcoming Carnage.
Illustrator and writer Andy Price has been the lead artist for the incredibly successful and record breaking My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic books from IDW Publishing. Andy has also done work for Storm King Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Archie Comics, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Rittenhouse Archives, and LEGO, among others. Other licenses include Adventure Time, Quantum Leap, Dark Shadows, Betty & Veronica, and Star Trek. Andy is a graduate of the Joe Kubert School, and works in most mediums. He lives in Georgia, USA where he watches horror films, scoops cat boxes, and celebrates James T. Kirk’s birthday.
Bryan SilverBaX is an American-born artist and actor who has worked as a police officer and who has served in the US Army as a paratrooper. In 2019, Bryan landed his first professional cover artwork with Metalshark Bro. Since then, he has worked with many publishers and retailers to create cover art that has been on titles from some of the industry’s top notch creators. Bryan has also done licensed and promotional work for some major brands and personalities, to include: SA Fishing Company, ProWrestling Tees, Danny Trejo, Scott Hall, and more. Bryan’s creativity has pushed past just doing mind-blowing cover art. He now works with watercolors to create abstract works and continues to expand his professional action career. You need to keep your eye on Bryan. He is a creative person that could pop up anywhere.
Gus Vazquez is an illustrator who has worked in nearly every field, including comic books, trading cards, storyboarding for music videos, commercials, animation and film, logo design, character and toy design, and more. He started his career in comic books working as an assistant to comic book artists Adam Pollina on X-Force, and Kevin McGuire on Trinity Angels. He got his first solo gig at Marvel Comics drawing the covers and interiors for Sunfire and Big Hero 6, the series that introduced the characters featured in Disney’s Oscar winning Big Hero 6. He has worked on such Marvel titles as Deadpool, X-Force, Spider-Man, What If? Civil War, What If? Back in Black, The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and more. For DC, he has worked on such titles as Green Lantern, JLA, Blue Beetle, and most recently on Flash, Suicide Squad, and Green Arrow. Gus was the artist on several issues of Claudio Sanchez’s (of rock music group Coheed and Cambria) The Amory Wars, and was instrumental in helping bring together the creative team of his friends, David Atchison (writer) and Tony Shasteen (illustrator), and his niece, film and TV actress Rosario Dawson on 12 Gauge’s The O.C.T. Currently, Gus has been working for DC Comics on The Sasquatch Detective, a backup story which can be found in the pages of Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles, as well as DMC (Daryl Makes Comics) and on La Borinquena. He is also working on his creator-owned book, Fang.
Kelly Yates is an illustrator best known for his work on Doctor Who comics for both Titan and IDW Publishing. His artwork also inspired the My Hero Academia and Doctor Who Kawaii TITANS toy line. In addition, his writes and illustrates the creator-owned books Amber Atoms and MonstHer.

Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel have been highly successful collaborators, including work on Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg, as well as their recent full restoration of their acclaimed graphic novel Breathtaker, originally serialized and then collected into a best-selling trade paperback by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, which is forthcoming from Titan Comics. Appearing now, McDaniel College in Westminster Maryland serves as premiere host of the Norman Rockwell Museum’s Breathtaker Exhibition, featuring works from acclaimed graphic novel. McDaniel’s Esther Prangley Rice Gallery showcases a large sampling of original works of art. The exhibition runs Monday, Aug. 22-Saturday, Oct. 29 and is free to the public.
This is the twenty-third annual Baltimore Comic-Con and this marks Insight Studios Groups’ twenty-third consecutive appearance at the show. On his own, Mark Wheatley has most recently released the Edgar Rice Burroughs Visions of Adventure portfolio that collects 16 of his most popular illustrations and paintings inspired by the Burroughs Universe. Also Songs of Giants, an oversized hardcover featuring his illustrations accompanying the poetry of Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs, Conan creator Robert E. Howard, and Cthulhu creator H.P. Lovecraft. Prior to its acclaimed debut, Wheatley illustrated and co-developed Doctor Cthulittle with studio mate G. D. Falksen. “America’s Most Beloved Semi-Obscure Cartoonist” writer-illustrator, Marc Hempel, grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and now resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where he plies his craft on such diverse projects ranging from his own Gregory, Tug & Buster, and Naked Brain to Disney Adventures, and from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser to “The Kindly Ones”; in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. Hempel’s art has also appeared in MAD, Marvel Fanfare, Epic Illustrated, Heavy Metal, Flinch, My Faith in Frankie, The Dreaming, Lucifer, Munden’s Bar, Nickelodeon Magazine, and a 21-page an Escapist story for Dark Horse Comics. His series The Love Brothers has appeared in Aces Weekly.
Mark Redfield is an actor, writer, producer, director, and artist who has been acting and directing professionally in theater and film since 1981. He is currently developing a new script, revising a novel, recording AudioBooks and AudioDrama, editing a film, and painting new pictures. A cartoonist who also designs sets for television and theater, his new work is shown in galleries, and appears weekly for sale at MarkRedfieldArt.com. His films include indie features such as the award-winning Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2002), Cold Harbor (2003) and The Death of Poe (2006). He is the co-creator and co-writer, with Stuart Voytilla, of the Vampire Hunters Incorporated series, which will make the leap from prose to graphic novel series. A voice actor who has hundreds of commercial, narration, audio book, and video game credits, he produces original audio and radio drama with RedfieldArtsAudio.com and distributes titles on CDBaby, ITunes, Audible, and on CD and LP.
Jennifer Rouse is a sound designer, video editor, web designer, and actress. Her acting credits include Come Hell or High Water, The Death of Poe, Chainsaw Sally, State of Play, Body of Lies, Step Up, and Step Up 2: The Streets, A Dirty Shame, and The Wire. Her film production work includes being the associate producer for Chainsaw Sally and The Death of Poe, and she did the music score for the film The Death of Poe.
Martha Thomases is a writer living in New York City. She created Dakota North with Tony Salmons for Marvel. As a freelance journalist, she has been published in the Village Voice, the New York Daily News, High Times, Spy, the National Lampoon, and more. Her work promoting The Death of Superman made an entire nation share in the tragedy of one of our most iconic American heroes. A Wave Blue World will publish her graphic novel with Richard Case, Second-Hand Rose.

G. D. Falksen is an author, lecturer, public speaker, and MC. He also studies history and has consulted for Disney. He is the author of The Ouroboros Cycle series and The Transatlantic Conspiracy, a YA mystery novel from Soho Teen. Other fiction includes “The Strange Case of Mr. Salad Monday,” “Cinema U,” “An Unfortunate Engagement,” and “The Mask of Tezcatlipoca.” He is also a voice actor and co-writer for the animated film Hullabaloo and an accompanying educational series titled Ask The Professor.
Mark Redfield is an actor, writer, producer, director, and artist who has been acting and directing professionally in theater and film since 1981. He is currently developing a new script, revising a novel, recording AudioBooks and AudioDrama, editing a film, and painting new pictures. A cartoonist who also designs sets for television and theater, his new work is shown in galleries, and appears weekly for sale at MarkRedfieldArt.com. His films include indie features such as the award-winning Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2002), Cold Harbor (2003), and The Death of Poe (2006). He is the co-creator and co-writer, with Stuart Voytilla, of the Vampire Hunters Incorporated series, which will make the leap from prose to graphic novel series in 2019. Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, the creative dynamos who engineered the Vertigo hit Breathaker, created the pioneering Blood of the Innocent mini-series, and developed the acclaimed First Comics series Mars, will lead a full roster of Insight Studios creators and guests to the Baltimore Comic-Con, September 28-30, 2018 in Booth #118 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Wheatley and Hempel have been highly successful collaborators, including work on Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg, as well as their recent full restoration of their acclaimed graphic novel Breathtaker, originally serialized and then collected into a best-selling trade paperback by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint, which is forthcoming from Titan Comics.
This is the nineteenth annual Baltimore Comic-Con and this marks Insight Studios Groups’ nineteenth consecutive appearance at the show. On his own, Mark Wheatley has most recently illustrated and co-developed Doctor Cthulittle, the lavishly illustrated, deluxe hardcover which originated as a successful Kickstarter project, with studio mate G. D. Falksen (this show marks their first appearance together since its release). His other most recent work includes supplying art for prose books such as the special signed limited edition of Swords Against the Moon Men, the Philip Jose Farmer series novel Tarzan and the Dark Heart of Time, and a wide variety new art prints, which he will have for sale at the booth.
Over the past few years, his work for CBS Television was featured on The Millers and Super Clyde, while he’s also developed a live stage show featuring Dick Tracy, Tarzan, and the Green Hornet. Robert Tinnell is a writer-director-producer with experience in a variety of media. He most recently adapted his Eisner Award-nominated graphic novel, Feast Of The Seven Fishes, into a feature film starring Madison Iseman, Skyler Gisondo, Joe Pantoliano, and Paul Ben- Victor. In late 2017, he produced the feature film Back Fork for writer/director/star Josh Stewart. Tinnell’s initial claim to fame was as producer on the notorious cult class Surf Nazis Must Die and as a producer of music videos, including the class MTV Award-winner, Straight Up by Paula Abdul. While frequently noted for their award-winning solo careers, both Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel are frequently reminded by fans of their success as collaborators. Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg are just a few of their other projects together. Mark Redfield is an American actor, author, artist, and filmmaker whose films include Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2002) and The Death of Poe (2006) and whose award-winning audio dramas includes Sinbad and the Pirate Princess also starring Caroline Munro and Martine Beswicke (www.RedfieldArtsAudio.com). Voice work includes audio books A Christmas Carol that features cover art by Mark Wheatley and Hunted by Mark Hewitt, an in-depth look at the unsolved Zodiac Killer case. G. D. Falksen is an author, lecturer, public speaker, and actor. He also studies history and has consulted for Disney. He is the author of The Ouroboros Cycle series, The Transatlantic Conspiracy, and several other works of fiction. He is a voice actor for and co-writer of the animated film Hullabaloo and an accompanying educational series titled Ask The Professor.
Evelyn Kriete is an editor, producer, artist, stylist, marketing adviser, social media strategist, and new media coordinator. She is also a crowdfunding consultant for Indiegogo and ComicMix. Through crowdfunding she has raised over $1 million for various projects, including the animated film Hullabaloo, which she is producing alongside film creator James Lopez. She has previously worked on the staff of literary publications such as Weird Tales and Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine.
Mike Gold has enjoyed an astounding career in comics, and been involved with everything from relaunching The Flash and Green Arrow to co-founding the Chicago Comic-Con. He was worked for numerous comic companies including Valiant/Acclaim, Classics Illustrated, and Image Comics. Gold was group editor and director of editorial development for DC Comics and co-founder of First Comics.
As a social activist, Gold co-founded The National Runaway Switchboard and many causes involving drug education, sex education and youth. In 2011, Mike was awarded the Hero Initiative’s first Humanitarian Award at the Baltimore Comic-Con’s Harvey Award Ceremony.
Currently, Mike is involved with ComicMix, Get the Point Radio and many social causes.
