Downey on Gibson and Iron Man 4… aka We Were Right

During an interview with Deadline, and joke was made between the interviewer and actor Robert Downey Jr. and the idea of Mel Gibson directing Iron Man 4. Numerous sites ran the joke as fact, we knew better and reported the news correctly, sticking to fact not fiction. The lesson is, don’t fall for click bait from other sites.

In a Reddit Ask Me Anything, the actor was asked again about Gibson and future plans for Iron Man.

Zedab: Hello, Iron Man. You’ve spoken before about your willingness to re-don the Iron Man Armor if Mel Gibson was to direct. First of all, on a scale of 1 to 11 how serious were you? Secondly, what do you think Mel Gibson would bring to the Iron Man series and would you still consider returning if he does not direct?

Robert Downey Jr.: It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend. I have other projects in mind for Mel and I – sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered.

So, once again, we correct in how we reported the story and other sites, that are consistently wrong with rumors, continued to be so.

Now, some, when it comes to Iron Man 4, Downey in that same interview with Deadline stated negotiations are underway. On The Ellen Show, Downey breaks down and confirms another movie is coming, though they are still negotiating details. If it is Iron Man 4 or something else is still up in the air.

And another answer on David Letterman.

No Robert Downey Jr. Did Not Suggest Mel Gibson to Direct Iron Man 4

RobertDowneyJuniorIronManSome sites have posted in his interview with Deadline, actor Robert Downey Jr. suggested that controversial actor/director Mel Gibson should direct Iron Man 4. Except, those who read the original article know that’s not what was meant, or said.

While promoting his new movie The Judge, discussion turned towards the chances of Iron Man 4, and Downey’s interest. He gives an update that discussions are being had, and the issues including his age, time commitment, his interest in doing other projects, and his wanting to spend time with his family. Basically, it’s a discussion of the right exit strategy for all.

About three quarters of the way through the article the topic turns towards Downey’s friend Mel Gibson, and the article writer’s suggestion he deserves a new chance, and also Downey’s second chance. It’s an excellent reminder of Downey’s past troubles, and that his rise is truly a second act, one many wrote off as wasn’t going to happen.

The suggestion of Gibson directing Iron Man 4 doesn’t come from Downey though, it comes from the interviewer.

DEADLINE: That’s the project Steve McQueen developed for himself.
DOWNEY: Yes, and I’m like, God, if I could find a part for Mel. But he also likes to do his own thing and sometimes he goes out of his way to do the unexpected. Sometimes with these things, it becomes a matter of time, and is seems like it’s getting a little bit old to hold a grudge.

DEADLINE: True, but the year he made Apocalypto, I didn’t see a better movie and he was ignored and hasn’t directed since. Marvel badly wants Iron Man 4 and you’ve said you aren’t doing it. How about the idea you’ll do that movie if Mel directs it?
DOWNEY: Correct.

DEADLINE: Is that our headline?
DOWNEY: Why not? That movie would be bananas.

Take it all out of context, and you have a tantalizing headline from sites trying to get hits. In context, it’s just a joke between interviewer and interviewee. Not story here folks, move along, and remember, read the actual source to get the full details, and don’t fall for clickbait.

Rumor: Downey Wants Who to Be in the Next Avengers?

RobertDowneyJuniorIronManThe new year has kicked off with a rather bizarre rumor published by Radar. The site is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is attempting to get two of his friends, Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster roles in Marvel‘s upcoming Avengers movies.

Jodie Foster has had some spotlight with her role in Elysium, but Gibson has been mostly off the radar since his high-profile anti-Semitic rant(s) and various domestic issues. All three are close friends.

Downey has a five-year deal with Marvel Studios that will most likely see him in the next two Avengers films. The next film, Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters in 2015.

All of this is from a “source” for the site, so take it with a massive grain of salt. Marvel is run by a prominent Israeli businessman, so I doubt Gibson will go over too well with him. While Downey himself got a second chance at a career after his publicized substance abuse issues, the same can’t be said for Gibson and he’s generally faded away or what films that have recently been released have bombed.

While I doubt we’ll see either, Foster is a more likely possibility out of the two.
