VICTORIA JAGUAR is the story of a healer who has been listening to the night sky for two hundred years. She was an eight-year-old girl in Colombia the night her village burned. She ran until a river stopped her. She could not cross it, and she could not save anyone. So, she looked up at the stars and asked for help. Not for herself. For everyone else. MARK LONDON ON SOME OF THE INSPIRATIONS BEHIND CREATING THE BOOK:

Victoria starts where I start. I was born in Colombia, and so was she, two hundred years ago, in a country where the legends were here long before the capes. I wanted to build a hero out of that older material instead of a lab accident.The idea that cracked her open for me was simple: healers have always fought. The person whose entire job is keeping you alive is usually the fiercest person in the room. I wanted a hero whose power is care, and whose care has teeth.Then there is the nightmare itself. The whole book grew from one question. What if the thing in your dreams got tired of waiting for you to fall asleep?And I wrote this for a painter on purpose. I knew that if Marco said yes, I could ask for things you cannot ask of a pencil. The art was an inspiration before a single page of it existed.

MARK LONDON ON WHAT HE HOPES READERS WILL TAKE AWAY FROM THIS BOOK:

That the people who heal the world are not soft. That care is a form of courage, and sometimes it has claws. Victoria’s first act as a hero was asking for help for everyone but herself, and if one reader carries that out of the book, I did my job.I also hope people close issue five feeling a little less alone with whatever stands behind them at three in the morning, because somebody out there has been listening to the night sky for two hundred years, and she is coming. And I hope they walk away knowing the Underworld Universe is bigger, older, and stranger than they thought. We are just getting started.

MARCO RUDY ON HIS APPROACH TO THE ARTWORK:

My art and storytelling differ from the usual, by being an organic conversation between layout and design, and the story being told. I like to use everything on a page, to convey the vibe, emotions, atmosphere and more, for each sequence, each page, each panel. Panel borders are not “just” borders, for me, they’re part of the story, they’re part of the experience – And with that I’m inviting the reader to go on an adventure, with me. If the reader takes their time reading, looking at each page, they’ll find bits of context, they’ll find extra material and “side quests” that may contextualize better each scene. A page in a Machine inspired universe doesn’t just have panel borders – the borders are actually gears, like gears inside a pocket watch (like a pocket universe) and Each gear is like a mini city filled with things happening there. That’s just an example of what I like to do.

Easy, it’s page 01 on Issue 3 – It’s so serene and beautiful and calm – Victoria ascends and she’s so thrilled about it. It’s one of the very best pages I’ve done and one of my career favorites.

MARCO RUDY ON ANY WRITERS HE’S WANTED TO COLLABORATE WITH BUT HAS YET TO, AND WHO ARE SOME OF HIS FAVORITE COMIC BOOK ARTISTS:

JH Williams and David Mack are people that over time became friendly people with whom I can share casual banter and great ideas. Before that, they were two of my most influential creators and nowadays they’re all that AND people I’d love to collaborate with. Add Bill Sienkiewicz to that. As for writers..Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning on space stuff, Rick Remender, the same, Matt Faction and/or Kathryn Immonen, Kelly Sue Deconnick, Ram V, Daniel Warren Johnson, too many to name, I suppose, Becky Cloonan whom I actually spoke to, about doing something, in the past.
