Madballs vs. Garbage Pail Kids #2

The Madballs and Garbage Pail Kids Clash in July

Dynamite has announced a historic summer crossover of epic proportions, as two beloved brands smash together in all their gross-out glory in Madballs vs. Garbage Pail Kids! The two legendary franchises have been captivating audiences young and old for over three decades, co-ruling a corner of counterculture with their pun-heavy names, subversive humor, and inventive art and design.

The story is written by Sholly Fisch, experienced across a deep bibliography with franchises like Superman, Star Wars, Scooby-DooMighty Mouse, and Looney Tunes. His award-nominated work has always balanced appealing to all ages and seamlessly adapting franchises with passionate fanbases. Though, he holds his tongue on spoiling which side might win in this battle.

Fisch is joined by artist, Jason Crosby, known for drawing the Garbage Pail Kids already for Topps’ latest trading card and sketch card sets. Now, he’s dove headfirst into research to equally hone his Madballs.

In addition to Jason’s action and gross-packed artwork in the story, the comic series will feature collectible variant covers by him and others. A project like this would be incomplete without the contributions of legendary GPK artist, Joe Simko, who contributes both an epic main cover and a trading card inspired one. Alongside collaborator, James Groman, Simko also crafted a mind-bursting wraparound cover!

Garbage Pail Kids kicked off its reign of irreverence in 1985 when Topps launched the first of many trading card series featuring their trademark hilariously revolting characters – all with clever names to match. The grossest kids you know have since translated to animation and a continuing full slate of globally-licensed consumer products.

For their part, Cloudco Entertainment’s Madballs first crashed into collectors’ lives the following year with their irregularly shaped toy foam balls. Ghastly faces, grotesque names, and ghoulish attitudes made them an instant hit, with Madballs selling tens of millions of toys and spawning their own animated specials and extensive product lines.

Madballs vs. Garbage Pail Kids #1 comes to comic shops in July 2022.

MADBALLS #3

Format: Comic Book
SRP: $2.99
Publisher: Roar Comics (an imprint of Lion Forge)

As this mad science experiment rolls into its penultimate chapter next week, we have the Madballs stranded in deep space with no choice but to (gasp!) actually team up to defeat the defending champions in a qualifying match for the Bizarro Bowl. This is their only chance to take out their headless arch-enemy Torsoids, but first they have to go through the huggably cute Hairballs. Things are bound to get sentimental, at least once the training montage is over. (Yes, this issue has a training montage.)

This month, our main story by Brad McGinty (Adventure Time) and Brian Smith (Stuff of Legend) continues as the divided Madballs prank each other into oblivion during the no-rules intergalactic competition known as the Bizarro Bowl. And if you remember the fabled Madballs Van — that crazy, towering rat rod playset that was advertised but never realized — you’re in for a treat! Two wild backup stories (and variant covers) by Gunsho and Sean Dove round out the issue, along with an illustrated history of the original toy craze, making for a packed little package the likes of which we rarely get for $2.99 these days.

MADBALLS #1

Freaky fun for everyone — if that rings a bell then you’re a fellow fan of those disgusting heads from the ‘80s, the Madballs. And if you’re still a little foggy, here’s the scoop: Madballs were sculpted rubber balls sporting outrageously gross faces, each with their own names and personalities, and what you did is . . . well, nobody really knew what to do with them. You just wanted them, and thus one of the earliest modern collectible toy crazes was born. Madballs combined the “gotta have it” impulse of trading cards with the fun of a toy you could hold and display, and the always great side benefit of earning your parents’ eternal disdain.

That cultural confluence is exactly where Roar Comics comes in with our new Madballs comic book series, a collection of gross-out gags from a curated lineup of today’s most cutting edge artists. And that’s not just me saying stuff. Seriously, here’s the whole list: on top of a main story by Brad McGinty (Adventure Time) and Brian Smith (Stuff of Legend), each issue features backups by Scarecrowoven, Gunsho, Dan Zettwoch, Jenny Zych, Sean Dove, Jesse Balmer, Jimmy Giegerich, and Matt Crabe. We crammed as much degeneracy into this as we could before we ran out of pages.

The first of four issues lands in comic shops next week with three variant covers, hot on the heels of new designer toys from Mondo and a crazy-looking apparel collection from Jeremy Scott. Madballs the comic book flows right along with this nostalgic resurgence for older fans (and precocious kids), bringing an art comics A-game that we rarely see in media tie-ins.

Lion Forge Comics debuts on comiXology

lion forge logoToday comiXology announced a digital distribution agreement with Lion Forge Comics, a digital-first comics publisher known for its growing library of action/adventure, sci-fi, superhero, and children’s titles. The deal adds more than 20 new series to comiXology’s selection, including licensed favorites like Miami Vice: Remix, Knight Rider, and Airwolf.

Since Lion Forge’s debut in 2013, the publisher has added new licensing deals and several homegrown series to its roster, all leading up to an extensive print rollout this year that began with the Miami Vice: Remix comic book series in March. The deal with comiXology closes a gap in its audience outreach efforts that the St. Louis-based publisher has been building for years.

All currently published Lion Forge comics are live today on comiXology’s cloud-based platform, with more set to debut every month in 2015. The assortment includes comics for young readers published by the Roar Comics imprint, and all licensed titles including the upcoming Care Bears and Madballs series published in partnership with American Greetings.
