Binc Opens Applications for the Macmillan Professional Development Scholarships

Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation

The Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation and Macmillan Publishers have announced that applications are open for the Macmillan Booksellers Professional Development Scholarship which provides $750 to booksellers traditionally underrepresented within the industry to attend their region’s fall trade show. Applications are accepted May 12-31, 2025

The scholarship allows eight booksellers from underrepresented groups to attend their regional independent book association trade show. Each scholarship covers the cost of travel, lodging and meals for one bookseller up to $750. This represents a $250 increase over prior years in acknowledgement of rising costs.
Categories of eligibility:

  • People of color, defined as people of African/African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latin American, Middle Eastern, or Native American/Indigenous descent.
  • People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, or queer.
  • People with disabilities (including but not limited to physical, sensory, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental illnesses).

Applicants must be currently employed and have 90 days of continuous employment as a regular part-time or full-time employee to be eligible to apply. The bookstore must be a member in good standing of one of the regional trade associations and applicants must discuss their application and potential selection as scholarship recipient with their store owner/manager prior to applying for the scholarship.

The applicant will answer three short essay questions. The winner from each region will be selected with an identity-hidden review process by a panel from Macmillan and the Binc program committee.

Binc Announces $45,000 Matching Gift to Help Book and Comic People Affected by California Wildfires and Other Disasters

Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of California, a matching gift pool will ensure donations made to the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation continue to have double the impact. Thanks to the generosity of Dav Pilkey, Forefront Books, Ingram Content Group, Macmillan Publishers, and Mad Cave Studios all gifts, regardless of size, up to $45,000 will be matched to meet the needs of the bookstores and comic shops and their store employees potentially impacted by the wildfires and other natural disasters.

The California wildfires have closed dozens of book and comic stores, forced many book and comic people to evacuate or shelter in place, and Binc is already aware of seven booksellers who have lost their homes. Free mental health wellness is being offered to anyone in need and the calls for help continue amidst widespread and ongoing devastation.

An initial $10,000 match from Bookshop.org, which was quickly met, motivated the $45,000 matching gift pool.

The foundation receives requests every day from book and comic store employees and owners experiencing unforeseen emergency financial, medical and mental health hardships, and has helped stores around the country recover after natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Binc and Macmillan Publishers Announce $10,000 Matching Gift to Help Book and Comic People Affected by Hurricane Helene and Other Disasters

Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation

Thanks to Macmillan Publishers, gifts made to the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation will have double the impact. Macmillan will match all gifts, regardless of size, up to $10,000 to meet the needs of the more than 200 bookstores and comic shops and thousands of store employees potentially impacted by Hurricane Helene. Binc has already received 15 calls for help from book and comic people in the path of destruction–more than 500 miles across six states.

We are already hearing from book and comic people who are traumatized, unable to find friends and family, and without water and electricity and we know there will be more stores in need of disaster relief as the waters recede, the cleanup begins, and cell phone signals return. We are grateful for our friends at Macmillan for their willingness to partner with us in support of bookstores and comic shops.
