Queer and How We Got Here: A (Personal) History is really entertaining and educational

More than a historical narrative, this story of queer identity interweaves the author’s personal history, showing queerness as both a community endeavor and deeply personal journey.

When Hazel was twelve years old, they came out as bisexual to their parents. At the time, they couldn’t have imagined who they are today: a nonbinary, transmasculine person in a loving queer relationship.

In seeking to understand their own history, Hazel takes readers on a parallel journey through queer history—from the origins of Western concepts of sexual orientation, to the synthesis of hormones, to the evolution of trans health care. They unpack the economic underpinnings of gender roles. They dive into the origins behind our concept of “coming out,” the history of “female husbands,” neopronouns, and the emergence of drag kings.

As Hazel grows and changes, so does their understanding of those who came before them, and the interweaving of both narratives gives the reader a powerful entryway into not just Hazel’s journey of self-actualization, but the queer community at large.

The Bizarre Bazaar: Mirror Town is like a Twilight Episode or Tales From the Crypt for kids

No one ever pays attention to twelve-year-old Abel Azari: not his parents, not the cool kids at school, and certainly not his crush, Ginny Mendoza. To them, he’s always been practically invisible.

That all changes the day he discovers a peculiar mirror in his neighbor’s garage. But this isn’t any old mirror, as Abel finds out soon enough when he accidentally falls through it.

What waits for him on the other side is a world just like his, except something is…off. Suddenly, his busy parents are spending every minute with him, his classmates treat him like a king, and now the girl he’s been crushing on wants to hang out? It’s the life Abel’s always dreamed of; how could he possibly go back to the way things were before?

But not everything–or everyone–is as it seems. Mirror Town hides evil secrets, and Abel will have to unravel them fast before he ends up trapped there forever.

K Is In Trouble Again is packed with laughs and reminds us of some classic comedy

Trouble finds him when a mischievous goat eats his train ticket home. Trouble finds him when he’s stowed away in a barrel of apples, hiding from angry farmers. Trouble finds him as he dangles from a ridiculously high diving board in front of the entire town. Trouble even finds him through a very talkative snowman, whose chatter gets K into even more trouble.

But it’s not all bad news for K: The stories in this graphic novel find him reunited with an old friend, taking a restorative trip to the sea, and making the acquaintance of a young farm girl!

Renegade Girls: A Queer Tale of Romance and Rabble-Rousing reminds us of the power of the press

Seventeen-year-old Helena “Nell” Cusack came to New York this summer looking for a story–a real story. She dreams of one day writing hard-hitting articles for the New York Chronicle, but so far she’s only managed to land a job as a lowly society reporter. That is, until Alice Austen strolls into her life, an audacious street photographer who encourages Nell to shake up polite society…and maybe also take a chance on love.

When her best friend, Lucia, is injured while working in a garment factory, Nell is determined to crack the story wide open. Posing as a seamstress, she reports on the conditions from the inside, making a name for herself as the Chronicle’s first ever stunt girl. But as Nell’s reporting gains momentum, so do the objections of those who oppose her. Will Nell continue to seek justice–even if it hurts her in the end?
