Todd McFarlane returns to art as the Spawn Universe Evolves with New Creative Teams!

Todd McFarlane returns to doing more artwork within the Spawn Universe as all four of his core titles—Spawn, King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched—roll out new creative teams this spring. Each debut issue will include a special Cover C 1:50 Foil Variant commemorating the transition, marking the beginning of the line’s next chapter as it moves steadily toward Spawn #400.

The shift begins in Spawn #376, where writer Matthew Rosenberg and artist Stephen Segovia propel the series one year into the future. The revelation that Heaven and Hell are real—and have abandoned Earth—has destabilized society at every level. Institutions strain. Governments falter. Spawn himself has vanished. Al Simmons, seemingly restored to humanity, lives anonymously in a fractured Manhattan until his return triggers the attention of “The 400,” a powerful cabal of angels, demons, vampires, and alien entities who believe Spawn’s existence threatens their survival.

That same fracture runs through King Spawn #55, as Rosenberg and artist Thomas Nachlik introduce Hudson Hill, a young man haunted by a psychic vision of the apocalypse—one centered on Al Simmons. As Spawn re-emerges publicly as a symbol of hope, another presence begins to take shape in the shadows. The divide between hero and monster narrows, and the consequences ripple outward.

In Gunslinger Spawn #54, writer Erica Schultz joins returning artist Carlo Barberi as new forces enter the conflict.

The mysterious Regulators arrive to correct a cosmic imbalance, revealing that the war between Heaven and Hell is only part of a larger system of control. Gunslinger finds himself caught in the middle of a recalibration that may cost him everything.

Meanwhile, The Scorched #51 sees writer Thomas Healy and artist Alessandro Vitti push the team into a more aggressive posture (McFarlane will help co-plot these storylines.)

Under Jessica Priest’s leadership, the Scorched move from reacting to threats to targeting them preemptively. Their actions draw scrutiny from governments, divine powers, and hellish adversaries alike, setting off a chain reaction that will redefine alliances across the Spawn Universe.

As these changes roll out across the four core books, the Spawn Universe tightens its focus and raises the stakes—setting the stage for what comes next.

Four years ago, Todd McFarlane launched the first large-scale expansion of the Spawn Universe with King Spawn #1. Now we are here to celebrate the success of the expanded Spawn’s Universe with King Spawn #50. An oversized issue with a story that will cross over into all three of the #50’s coming out in the coming months. (King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, The Scorched). An ancient force, almost as old as time itself, has returned, and Spawn is in its sights. The story, sent into two chapters per issue, will be penciled by two of the Spawn Universe’s best, Stephen Segovia and Carlo Barberi. This is the one you don’t want to miss.

King Spawn #50 Variant Gets an Original, Hand-Drawn Spawn Sketch by Todd McFarlane and more!

Todd McFarlane Productions has unveiled new details behind one of the most exciting incentives tied to the oversized King Spawn #50 and the launch of the50/50/50 Program : Cover H, the 1:1000 Raw Pencil Virgin Variant.

Each copy of Cover H will include an original, hand-drawn Spawn sketch inserted directly into the book. Fifty orders will receive sketches by Todd McFarlane himself. After that, all remaining sketches will be randomly assigned from a select group of acclaimed Spawn Universe artists: Jonathan Glapion, Carlo Barberi, Brett Booth, Stephen Segovia, and Jason Shawn Alexander. Sketch artist selection is random and cannot be requested—and ordering early does not guarantee a McFarlane Sketch.

In addition to the sketch insert, every copy of Cover H will be signed by Todd McFarlane and will include a CGC Certificate verifying that both the book and signature are eligible for CGC’s Signature Series program. The certificate will also confirm the authenticity of the inserted sketch. McFarlane has committed to not sign this cover again, ensuring these copies remain limited and highly collectible.

The 1:1,000 variant will likely have a very low print run along with the sketches making it a very difficult book to find in the future. In the announcement, McFarlane said there’s a strong chance there’s less than 100 of the Cover H books printed.

This special variant is part of the larger 50/50/50 Program—a major celebration of the Spawn Universe’s three core titles: King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched. As each series hits its 50th issue over the next year, all three will share a matching lineup of premium variant covers and interconnected story elements.

The milestone begins with King Spawn #50, which kicks off a new crossover event that reshapes the Spawn Universe mythos. A powerful ancient force returns—and Spawn is in its sights. The extra-length issue will feature two chapters—illustrated by Carlo Barberi and Stephen Segovia—and a full lineup of covers from McFarlane himself, Skottie Young, Mark Spears, and Puppeteer Lee whose connecting covers span all three of the 50th issues.

McFarlane is also teaming up with CGC for a special collaboration celebrating the conclusion of the 50/50/50 Program. More details will be revealed at the end of September.

King Spawn #50 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, October 15. The Final Order Cutoff for retailers is Monday, September 22.

King Spawn #50 Debuts a Massive Variant Lineup and 50/50/50 Program

Todd McFarlane Productions and Image Comics will celebrate the next major milestone in the Spawn Universe with the release of King Spawn #50—an extra-length anniversary issue launching an exciting new storyline and the official kickoff of the “50/50/50 Program” this October.

The 50/50/50 Program will span the three core Spawn Universe titles—King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn, and The Scorched—as each series reaches its 50th issue over the coming year. All three issues will feature a matching lineup of variants and incentives from some of the most exciting artists in comics, creating one unified program across the Spawn Universe.

Just over four years ago, the debut of King Spawn #1 set new records as the highest-selling superhero monthly comic book series launch of the 21st Century. Now, this special release sets the stage for a crossover event that will unfold across all three landmark issues, as a primordial force returns to target Spawn and forever change one of its core characters.

The story will be told with two chapters per issue, brought to life by Spawn Universe artists Carlo Barberi and Stephen Segovia.

In celebration of this milestone, King Spawn #50 will debut with an expansive lineup of covers with artwork from McFarlane himself, Skottie Young, Mark Spears, and Puppeteer Lee—with Lee contributing a connecting cover set across King Spawn #50Gunslinger Spawn #50, and The Scorched #50.

It will also boast a lineup of high-tier incentive variants, including a 1:50 cover by Mark Spears and multiple premium editions by McFarlane himself, culminating in the 1:1000 Raw Pencil Virgin Variant.

Each copy of this 1:1,000 variant will contain a one-of-one original sketch, inserted directly into the issue. The first 50 sketches will be drawn by McFarlane. If more than 50 copies are ordered of the 1:1,000, additional sketches will be provided by Spawn Universe artists Jonathan Glapion, Carlo Barberi, Brett Booth, Stephen Segovia, and Jason Shawn Alexander. Every copy of the 1:1000 is guaranteed to contain an original sketch but sketches other than McFarlane’s will be distributed at random.

Additionally, two of the premium incentive editions—Cover G (1:250) and Cover H (1:1000)—will be signed by Todd McFarlane and will never be signed again. McFarlane has confirmed that these books will be strictly limited to this single wave of signed copies, ensuring their long-term value for collectors and retailers.

McFarlane and CGC will also team up for a special collaboration tied to the 50/50/50 Program. More details will be announced in the months ahead, including a private signing and exclusive collectibles tied to all three milestone issues.
