Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent #1 (DC Comics) – Someone is killing versions of Superman across the multiverse and Jon Kent is called upon to stop the killing.

ARC (Image Comics) – An intriguing comic focused on illegal poaching and those fighting against it.

Black Tape #2 (AWA Studios) – The first issue was interesting about a musician who died and the viper’s circling to take advantage of what’s been left by him.

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a lot of fun putting the spotlight on a relatively new character and taking a familiar dynamic and switching it up.

By Water: The Felix Manz Story (Plough Publishing) – The true story of the conflict between establishment reformer Ulrich Zwingli and his student Felix Manz.

Dejah Thoris #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Chuck Brown writing an early chapter of Dejah’s life? Yeah, we’re intrigued.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (IDW Publishing) – With a film coming later this month, check out the prequel comic!

The Gimmick #1 (AHOY Comics) – It’s superpowers meets wrestling in a very interesting debut that sets up an intriguing world and story.

Killchella #3 (Scout Comics) – What should’ve been the festival weekend of a lifetime has now turned into a nightmare. It’s the horror genre mixed with summer music festivals.

New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1 (Marvel) – We’re told this ties into the upcoming “Fall of X” which puts it on our spotlight.

Predator #1 (Marvel) – We’re promised this will turn what we know about the Predators on its head and we’re here for it.

Samurai Doggy #4 (AfterShock) – The previous issue was a visual feast and we’re intrigued what this next issue brings.

Space Job #2 (Dark Horse) – The first issue was hilarious and caught us off guard. We laughed a lot and hoping for more of that in the second issue.

Stoneheart #1 (Image Comics) – A new ongoing fantasy series from Emma Kubert.

Traveling to Mars #4 (Ablaze) – Roy gets an unexpected chance at salvation when his estranged wife agrees to talk to him before his spaceship cuts off communications with the Earth. A surprisingly heartfelt series.

X-23: Deadly Regenesis #1 (Marvel) – An unknown chapter of Laura’s life!

Betty: The Final Girl (Archie Comics/Archie Horror) – Archie Horror has been on point and entertaining, so we’re excited for this riff on the slasher genre.

Icon vs. Hardware #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – The first “event” for the Milestone universe as “Worlds Collide”!

Investigators: Agents of SUIT Vol. 1 (First Second) – The main series this spins out of is a lot of fun. We’re hoping for more of the same with this graphic novel for younger readers.

Killchella #2 (Scout Comics) – The first issue nailed the start to a new slasher concept, one that takes place at a music festival. Will the kills live up to expectations?

The Last Barbarians #1 (Image Comics) – Sylv has a lot of skills…and she’ll need them all to survive this hero’s journey! It’s a new fantasy series that sounds like a quest to make some bank. We’re intrigued to see this as that cover is beautiful.

Masters of the Universe: Masterverse #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – To save the life of her champion, the Sorceress must take the Cosmic Enforcer on a tour of the multiverse! This sounds awesome!

Nemesis: Reloaded #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue surprised us in how on point it was with current societal topics. We want to see where it goes and what it might have to see underneath the over-the-top violence.

Nightcrawlers #1 (Marvel) – The next chapter of “Sins of Sinister” focuses on the hybrid Nightcrawlers.

Parker Girls #5 (Abstract Studios) – The series has been a lot of fun with a mix of action and laughs.

Spa (Fantagraphics) – It sounds like The Menu but in the selfcare space and we’re totally down for that!

Torrent #1 (Image Comics) – It’s a brand new superhero universe from Marc Guggenheim and Rico Renzi. Michelle Metcalf is the world’s most happy-go-lucky hero, Crackerjack, until tragedy forces her to cross the line from hero to vigilante.

WildC.A.T.s #4 (DC Comics) – Just a hell of a lot of fun with laughs, action, and drama. Such a great return of the characters and series!

Killchella #1 brings horror to music festivals

This past year has been an interesting one for music festivals. So many disasters, failures, cancelations, and just odd stories, they’ve stood out as a great backdrop for someone to use. We’re getting that with Killchella #1 that has a group of friends getting together for some music… and some murder.

Review: Killchella #1

This past year has been an interesting one for music festivals. So many disasters, failures, cancelations, and just odd stories, they’ve stood out as a great backdrop for someone to use. We’re getting that with Killchella #1 that has a group of friends getting together for some music… and some murder.

Written by Mario Candelaria, Killchella #1 is an interesting start. There’s really two aspects to it. There’s the group of friends getting together as well as the body count that’s slowly rising. The former is easy to get into. The latter is a bunch of teases that’s the “hook” of it all.

What’s more impressive is Candelaria takes what should be a group of friends we dislike and makes them likeable. There’s the actress, some wrestlers, all a bit affluent and disconnected from reality. This isn’t me and my buddies stoned going to a concert. There’s money here but there’s something about this group that’s relatable.

The murders are interesting. The opening has a Scream aspect about it delivering some kills to open the comic much like each film opened with an ever escalating scene. And Candelaria might have used that to make the friends tolerable in a way. The first two deaths are a duo who feel like they’re in it “for the gram” constantly looking for that good photo and not living in the moment. They’re the individuals you want to slap. And in comparison, the latter group is living in the moment, friends getting together.

Serg Acuña‘s art is solid and entertaining. The kills are gruesome but not over the top. The friends getting together feels a bit out of reach in style but not so much that you disconnect as a reader. There’s a use of the settings to create a more relaxed environment that then leads to the eventual bodies. The art should get interesting as the deaths and chaos ratchet up even further.

There’s something fun about Killchella #1. It has a horror vibe that’s relaxed in some ways, a feeling I got when I watched Scream for the first time. it’s an updated feel and look but at its roots, it’s a classic slasher.

A.X.E.: Judgement Day Omega #1 (Marvel) – The event has been one of the best Marvel has done in a while and we want to see what the new status quo is and what this issue lays out for the various folks involved.

Billionaire Island: Cult of Dogs #1 (AHOY Comics) – Mark Russell is back with more satire and when he’s skewering society, it’s well worth checking it. Russell consistently will make you think as well as laugh.

Dark Ride #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue delivered an intriguing start to the new horror series and we want to see where it all goes from there.

Death of Superman 30th Anniversary Special #1 (DC Comics) – The original creators behind the event are back with new stories celebrating 30 years.

Do a Powerbomb #6 (Image Comics) – Wrestling. Drama. Horror. Yeah, this has everything checked off for us. Did we mention the awesome art? This is a series that stands out this year.

Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel) – Ryan North and Iban Coello set Marvel’s first family in a new direction, a perfect time to dive in for what should be a good creative combo.

Gospel #1 (Image Comics) – Inspired by Miyazaki and set in the chaos of King Henry VIII’s reign, that alone has us intrigued about this one.

Killchella #1 (Scout Comics) – A music festival turns deadly when a reclusive pop star returns after five years and attempts a massive human sacrifice ritual.

Lord of the Jungle #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Dan Jurgens writing Tarzan? Yeah, we’re in for that.

New Golden Age (DC Comics) – Geoff Johns’ next chapter of his vision kicks off here bringing back classic DC characters that haven’t had the spotlight for some time.

The Nice House on the Lake #11 (DC Comics) – The horror sci-fi series has been amazing with with one more issue to go, we’re glued to every issue to find out what the hell is going on.

Sabretooth and the Exiles #1 (Marvel) – Sabretooth has had it rough with Krakoa so what plans there are for him in the “X Universe” should be interesting.

Skullkickers Super Special #1 (Image Comics) – Celebrating 12 years of Skullkickers, we’re always down for this series. It was WAY ahead of its time with off the rails fantasy adventure.

Soldier Stories (Image Comics/Top Cow Productions) – Four tales of conflict written by veterans.

Specs #1 (BOOM! Studios) – We get a They Live vibe from this when some teens get a pair of X-ray specs and things turn dark and more than they bargained for.

WildC.A.T.s #1 (DC Comics) – The team is back with a new take that has them more built into the DC Universe. It feels like the start of something big to come and hopefully indicates we’ll get to see more of the Wildstorm Universe return.

Killchella is coming in October from writer Mario Candelaria, artist Serg Acuña, colorist Katherine Lobo, letterer Matt Krotzer, edited by James Gerfuson, and published by Scout Comics.
