Like the first volume, Kaiju No. 8 Relax Vol. 2 has its moments but overall is for diehard fans

With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters. But kaiju don’t attack every day! Sometimes, even the best and brightest kaiju-fighting heroes get a chance to relax.

The gag-filled spin-off of Kaiju No. 8 continues! Kafka Hibino heads out on a camping trip with his fellow recruits, but Ichikawa’s strong opinions throw a wrench into the fun. Then, the holidays roll around. Get ready to spend New Year’s and Valentine’s Day with the Third Division!

Kaiju No. 8 Relax Vol. 1 has its moments but overall is for diehard fans

Sometimes even the greatest kaiju-fighting heroes need a day off.

With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters. But kaiju don’t attack every day! Sometimes, even the best and brightest kaiju-fighting heroes get a chance to relax.

Join the top troops of the Third Division of the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju, on their days off! Kafka Hibino attempts to bare his soul in meditation, only to end up baring something else. Then, an off-duty Captain Mina Ashiro blows off steam at the arcade, Reno Ichikawa confronts his fear of ghosts, a curious cadet sets out to glimpse Vice-Captain Hoshina’s eyes and uncovers a sweet surprise, and Kikoru Shinomiya finally spends time with her friends.

Thanks to the efforts of the new generation of soldiers, Kafka makes it in time to save Mina Ashiro from Kaiju No. 9. Not only that, he has a host of improved Defense Force–style combat techniques tailored to fight his enemy. But with Kaiju No. 9 able to access the absorbed Isao Shinomiya and his wealth of martial arts knowledge, will Kafka’s refined battle techniques stand a chance?

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 13 is packed with action and sets up the confrontation we’ve been waiting for

Mina Ashiro falls into the clutches of Kaiju No. 9 after its emergence in Tachikawa. Kafka goes to rescue her, but daikaiju start emerging in several places across the city, impeding his progress. The situation becomes even more complicated when he picks up on a new kaiju presence and a never-before-seen entity reveals itself!

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 12 is packed with some awesome action and tense moments

The Eastern Division has been attacked by identified-class kaiju. Narumi and Kikoru have taken care of their targets, but Hoshina is still facing off against No. 12, the finished project that No. 10 served as the prototype for. Even worse, Numbers Weapon 10 won’t output more than 83 percent unleashed combat power, making this battle even more of a struggle for Hoshina!

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 12 is packed with some awesome action and tense moments

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 9 is another fantastic volume that amps up the action

With the looming threat of a cataclysm induced by No. 9, the next generation of the Defense Force takes steps to prepare. Reno undergoes training and becomes the first compatible user of No. 6 in history. Kafka sharpens his skills by learning squadron-style combat techniques under Hoshina’s tutelage. Meanwhile, Kikoru gets clearance from Narumi to inherit a powerful memento that once belonged to her mother.

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 8 shows off why this series is so good as it focuses on Reno and his Numbers Weapon

Reno’s chance to show off the fruits of his Numbers Weapon training arrives when he’s ordered to take part in a live kaiju-combat field test.
