2024 JewCE Awards

The Center for Jewish History has announced the finalists for the 2024 JewCE Awards, recognizing the exceptional contributions by artists, writers, and creators who have enriched Jewish storytelling through the vibrant medium of comics. The awards ceremony will take place at 6:30 PM, on November 10, 2024, following the conclusion of the Jewish Comics Experience convention. This year’s JewCE Awards highlight a diverse range of creators, themes, and genres, celebrating Jewish stories and voices in the world of comics.

The nominees span a wide array of categories, from “All Ages” selections to powerful works in “Combatting Prejudice,” “Historical Narrative,” and “Jewish Tradition and Folklore.” The award categories underscore the commitment of the Jewish Comics Experience to foster inclusive, impactful storytelling within the Jewish community and beyond.

JEWCE announces a documentary uncovering the real-life origin story of comics and superheroes

Attention all fans of pop culture and Jewish history! JLTV (Jewish Life Television) has announced its exciting partnership with The Center for Jewish History and TurnKey Pictures to bring viewers JEWCE: The Jewish Comics Experience – A JLTV Documentary Special!

This captivating documentary program (30 minutes) uncovers the real-life origin story of comic books and superheroes, created by pioneering Jewish Americans from World War II to the present day. As colorful and thrilling as the comics themselves, this program is a must-see for comic lovers and history buffs!

Jewish creators played a foundational role in the comic book industry, dating back to the 1930s and 1940s. Iconic figures like Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Jewish duo who created Superman, infused their characters with themes of social justice and the immigrant experience, reflecting their own backgrounds as children of Jewish immigrants.

Jewish creators have continued to shape the industry to today, giving rise to diverse characters and stories that address issues of morality, identity, and heroism, often drawing from Jewish history, folklore, and values.

JewCE Awards

This year’s JewCE Awards will be chaired by the esteemed Roy Schwartz, CNN pop culture historian and author of the bestselling Is Superman Circumcised? The Complete Jewish History of the World’s Greatest Hero. The awards promise to be a night of triumph and celebration of Jewish narrative art. Roy’s extensive credentials, including winning the 2021 international Diagram Prize, make him the ideal leader to navigate the galaxy of this year’s groundbreaking talents.

The awards ceremony will offer attendees the opportunity to meet the creative forces behind this year’s nominated works, dive into their creative universes, and witness the crowning of this year’s comic champions. The judges for this year’s JewCE Awards are Paul Levitz, Jenny Caplan, Danny Fingeroth, Roy Schwartz, Samantha Baskind, Jeremy Dauber, Brian Michael Bendis, Karen Green, Barry Deutsch, and Rutu Modan.

JewCE Convention

The Jewish Comics Experience convention on Sunday will feature an array of attractions, including engaging with industry-leading comics creators and scholars through panel discussions and workshops, family-friendly activities, a silent auction of original art, and an expansive Artist Alley. Enthusiasts can explore the exhibit hall for exclusive comics, graphic novels, and unique merchandise, all celebrating the rich tapestry of Jewish culture.

Last year’s event brought comic legends like Frank Miller and Trina Robbins to the stage, and while this year’s lineup of heroes and creators is still under wraps, the promise of another legendary assemblage (with many returning guests) is on the horizon.

The Center for Jewish History has announced the return of JewCE, the Jewish comics experience, on November 10, 2024.

Superheroes Triumph: Center for Jewish History Extends Comics and Pop Culture Exhibition

Heeding the call of devoted fans, the Center for Jewish History (CJH) is excited to announce the extension of its highly popular exhibition, JewCE! The Museum and Laboratory of the Jewish Comics Experience, until February 18, 2024. This immersive journey into the dynamic world of Jewish comics will continue to captivate audiences in the Rosenberg and Winnick galleries.

This dynamic exhibition celebrates the powerful fusion of Jewish culture, history, and artistic expression through the lens of comics and graphic storytelling.

Featuring original artworks, historical artifacts, and interactive installations, the exhibition highlights the evolution of Jewish themes in comics, spanning from classic newspaper strips to contemporary graphic novels. Highlights include original Captain America artwork by co-creator Joe Simon, the rare 1933 “Reign of the Superman” story by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, and the works of Holocaust survivor Lily Renée, an early pioneer in the comic book industry.

The Museum and Laboratory of the Jewish Comics Experience comprises five micro-exhibits from CJH Partner organizations, exploring themes such as the Jewish origins of the comic book industry and the Jewish response to fascism in comics.

The exhibition aims to engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds, providing an immersive experience that connects visitors with Jewish history, culture, and identity in a new and exciting way.

Taking place in November, the convention has now released all of the panels for streaming and to watch on demand.

It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s… Moses! And Miriam, and the Maccabees, and the Megillah… and all of our sacred texts and heroes (and not just the ones that start with the letter M!). They’re being given renewed life and attention in Jewish comics and graphic novel—and now, for the first time ever, you can thrill to the amazing adventures of their talented creators—both commercial and cutting edge—as they reveal the secret origins of their art and careers!

Moderated by Jordan B. Gorfinkel, the panel features JT Waldman, Jessica Tamar Deutsch, Mat Tonti, and Willy Mendes.

JewCE 2023: Jewish Female Narratives in the Graphic Arts

To go along with the Jewish Comics Experience exhibition, JewCE held a convention with numerous panels highlighting the history of comics and it connection to Jewish culture and history. Taking place in November, the convention has now released all of the panels for streaming and to watch on demand.

Join an amazing group of female creators to consider issues of gender and Jewishness in personal narrative. Panelists will discuss how gender and creed does or doesn’t, should or shouldn’t, inform their storytelling. They will also explore if and how their decisions change depending on whether the stories are creator-owned or with licensed characters, or if they are working with collaborators with differing backgrounds.

Moderated by Karen Green, the panel features Leela Corman, Amy Kurzweil, Alisa Kwitney, and Miriam Libicki.

JewCE 2023: Telling Other People’s Stories

To go along with the Jewish Comics Experience exhibition, JewCE held a convention with numerous panels highlighting the history of comics and it connection to Jewish culture and history. Taking place in November, the convention has now released all of the panels for streaming and to watch on demand.

Who gets to write the story of a people, person, or event?  How can you approach a historical or contemporary story that isn’t your own with empathy, understanding of the subject, audience, and your own influence as a creator?  Join us to hear from a group of creators who have approached this craft from multiple vantages and hear their take on the nuance and subtlety of retelling.

Moderated by Julian Voloj, the panel features Tracy White, Stephanie Phillips, Koren Shadmi, and Neil Kleid.

JewCE 2023: Will Eisner: The First Poet Laureate of the Jewish Graphic Novel

To go along with the Jewish Comics Experience exhibition, JewCE held a convention with numerous panels highlighting the history of comics and it connection to Jewish culture and history. Taking place in November, the convention has now released all of the panels for streaming and to watch on demand.

Will Eisner was a ground-breaking comics creator in the 1940s with THE SPIRIT, and then again in the 1970s with his powerful A CONTRACT WITH GOD serving as the breakthrough modern graphic novel inspiring a generation of writers and artists. It was the first of a series of graphic novels he created focusing on life in the Jewish immigrant communities of New York in the early 20th Century. His name lives on in the Eisner Hall of Fame and Eisner Awards, the most prestigious honors in the field. More importantly, his creative influence continues to be felt through his proteges, students and readers. Join Paul Levitz (author of WILL EISNER: CHAMPION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL and Eisner Hall of Fame inductee for his long career as a comics writer, editor, publisher and educator) and former Eisner assistant Jules Feiffer (Pulitzer, Oscar, Obie and Eisner Hall of Fame inductee) for a discussion of Eisner and his continuing relevance.

Comics have become a recognized medium for engaging with Jewish history, Holocaust narrative, and personal memory/narrative.  Join the panelists and moderator Samantha Baskind to talk about the role of remembrance culture in Jewish comics.
