Comic Art Auction to Break Records

Bookmark and Share

The original drawing by Fred Ray for the cover of Superman #14 is hitting the auction block.  It’s projected to bring in somewhere between $500,000 to $750,000.  Along with that will be the original cover to Detective Comics #69 which features the Joker.  That’s supposed to sell between $400,000 to $500,000.  The previous record is $380,000.  The auction is taking place at ComicConnect.com.

The pieces are both owned by artist Jerry Robinson, who we got to meet at New York Comic Con, a legend in the comic book field, who is best known for co-creating Batman’s sidekick Robin and creating the Dark Knight’s nemesis The Joker.  He rescued the pieces just before they were about to be thrown out.

Both covers are iconic and you can see below.

Joker Creator a Political Activist!?

Wizard’s website covers the story, but here’s the highlights:

  • The Joker was created by Batman artist and political cartoonist Jerry Robinson
  • Robinson launched a media campaign to free the imprisoned Uruguayan political cartoonist Francisco Laurenzo Pons
  • Organized a major syndicate for editorial artists to control their own work
  • Helped Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster get a much needed financial settlement and their byline restored on their famous creation Superman
