Comic Book Collector Loses Leadership Chance

You might remember back in November how Tennessee House Republican Jason Mumpower and the dismissed charge that his comic book collection was an ethics violation.  Mumpower lost his chance this week to rule over the Tennessee House like Doom in Latveria.

The Tennessean is reporting that fellow Republican Kent Williams was voted speaker through a power move and backing by the 49 Democrats.  In a surprise move Williams voted for himself and the Democrats quickly supported him at times sending the chamber into bedlam.  Williams had said he’d support Mumpower.

This is the first Republican speaker of the House since 1969, who ironically needed the Democrats to gain control.

Comic Book Collection Not an Ethics Violation

Comic books have been accused of corrupting the youth, but corrupting an elected official?  The Associated Press reports that Tennessee House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower did nothing wrong by not disclosing his 17,000 comic books as a valuable asset.  The ethics disclosure are used to bring up any conflicts of interests that may occur as an elected official.  A comic book collection doesn’t rise to that concern.

State law requires disclosure of investments of over $10,000.  Depending on the books those 17,000 comics might not even reach that amount.

Mumpower represents the Bristol area, has collected comic books since he was 12 and his favorite book is Spider-man.
