Emerald City Comic Comic: Declan Shalvey Variant Cover for Ed Brisson’s ‘The Ballad of Sang’ Revealed

Ed Brisson’s The Ballad of Sang #1 will feature an Emerald City Comic Con (ECCC) variant by Declan Shalvey. ECCC is in Seattle, WA, from March 1-4 at the Washington State Convention Center. Both Ed Brisson and Declan Shalvey will be signing at the Oni Press booth #216, Friday March 2 from 11am-12pm, and Saturday March 3 from 1-2pm.

Kidnapped off the streets of the Philippines as an infant and trained as a child assassin, Sang has never had a childhood. All he’s ever known is killing and the kindness of his master, Chen, the closest thing Sang has to a father. When Sang’s enthusiasm botches a job, it brings the wrath of Don Minchella down on the pair, resulting in Chen’s murder. Barely escaping with his own life—and with Minchella’s severed arm in tow—Sang swears revenge, while every gang in the city mobilizes to return him to Minchella, dead or alive.

A propulsive blend of mature audience violence, humor, and pathos, The Ballad of Sang is for fans of cult Asian cinema such as the films of Takashi Miike and Park Chan-wook, and of comics such as Deadly ClassJojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Hit-Girl.

In The Ballad of Sang, Brisson joins Italian artist Alessandro Micelli and colorist Shari Chankhamma for the new action/adventure series. The Ballad of Sang is Micelli’s debut the in American comics market. This is Brisson’s first work with Oni.

The Ballad of Sang is slated for release March 7, 2018.

Kodansha Releases New Digital Sports Manga on March 7

ace-of-the-diamondDuring its panel at Emerald City Comicon in Seattle today, Kodansha Comics announced the digital publication of the holy trinity of fan-requested sports manga: Ace of the Diamond, All-Rounder Meguru, and Giant Killing. Volume 1s of all 3 titles will go on sale March 7 on all of Kodansha’s digital retail channels.

Yuji Terajima’s Ace of the Diamond, a hot-blooded, epic-length bestseller in Japan about the travails of a gifted left-handed pitcher who comes to the big city to play premier-level high-school baseball, was the basis of the hit anime series that streamed on Crunchyroll.

All-Rounder Meguru, a stirring drama about a determined young man looking to escape the bleak prospects of home by making it in the brutal world of Shooto MMA (mixed martial arts), is the latest work from acclaimed creator Hiroki Endo (Eden: It’s an Endless World!, published by Dark Horse Comics).

all-rounder-meguruMasaya Tsunamoto and Tsujitomo’s Giant Killing, about an eccentric-genius soccer coach who returns from abroad to bring success to an underdog team, is one of the all-time-favorite and long-running (still ongoing in Japan) manga about the beautiful game. It was also adapted into a hit anime series.

In addition, the panel at ECCC announced Natsumi Eguchi’s Hozuki’s Coolheadedness (adapted into the anime available from Sentai Filmworks), Kotono Kato’s Altair: A Record of Battles, and Ryosuke Tomoe’s Museum, which will see digital publication on March 21. Kodansha Comics has been steadily bringing out new, off-the-beaten-path manga series in digital format since the start of 2017.

Volume 1s of Ace of the Diamond, All-Rounder Meguru, Giant Killing, Hozuki’s Coolheadedness, Altair: A Record of Battles, and Museum will be available for sale or preorder across all Kodansha Comics digital book channels: BookWalker, comiXology, Google Play, iBooks, Kindle, Kobo, and nook.

ECCC 2017: Kevin J. Anderson and Steven L. Sears Debut Stalag-X

In late 2017, Vault Comics will publish an all-new original graphic novel developed in partnership by Kevin J. Anderson and Steven L. Sears, with art by Mike Ratera.

Stalag-X is a futuristic interpretation of classic POW/concentration-camp dramas such as The Bridge on the River Kwai, Stalag 17, Victory, and The Great Escape. The tone is dark, edgy, and personal. Not an epic about space wars and galactic fleets, but about people trying to survive in a lethal situation; in a concentration camp that removes the word “humanity” from the dictionary.

The backdrop is an interstellar war of genocide between Humanity and the deadly alien race known as the KRAEL. One prisoner—known only as “Joe Human”—is taken to a harsh P.O.W. camp on a distant planet. Humans will be examined, tortured and forced to endure experiments that rip into their very minds as the Krael seek to answer the question “What is ‘Human’?” A question that, in their hellish situation, the human prisoners are finding harder to answer.

But why? The Krael are already winning the war. They’ve pushed Earth back in battle after battle. They’ve never taken prisoners before—and, yet, Stalag-X exists. Why does Joe Human get the sense that the Krael are desperate and unsure of their victory? The key is here, perhaps the secret to reversing the direction of the war.
