Civil War dethrones Godzilla and Kong from the top of the weekend box office

Civil War

Civil War debuted at the top of the box office with an estimated $25.7 million. The film has no international grosses reported. It’s a solid debut for director Alex Garland whose Ex Machina debuted with $237,264 and went on to gross $25.4 million domestically and $37.4 million worldwide in 2014; Annihilation debuted with $11.1 million, grossing $32.7 million domestically, and $43.1 million worldwide in 2018; and Men debuted in 2022 with $3.3 million and grossed $7.6 million domestically and $11.2 million worldwide.

In second place was Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire which added $15.5 million to its domestic total which now stands a little over $158 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $73.9 million over the week to bring that total to $279.9 million and a worldwide gross of $437.9 million.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire came in third with $5.8 million bringing its domestic gross to $96.9 million. over the week, it grossed $13.7 million to bring that total to $63 million and $159.9 million worldwide.

Kung Fu Panda 4 improved moving to fourth and grossing $5.5 million to bring its domestic total to $173.7 million. Over the week, the film grossed $34.9 million at the international box office to bring that to $279.3 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed just under $453 million.

Dune: Part Two came in fifth place with $4.3 million bringing its domestic fross to $272.1 million. Internationally, the movies has grossed $412.4 million for a worldwide total of $684.5 million.

In comic film news…

Madame Web grossed $3,745 but its domestic gross remains at $43.8 million. Internationally, the film added about $444,000 over the week and has grossed $56.4 million. The movie sits at $100.3 million.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training gained $1,219 to bring its domestic total $17.7 million domestically. Internationally, the film has grossed $26.6 million. Worldwide the movie has grossed $44.3 million.

It was a solid opening for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire which debuted over the weekend with $80 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, the film grossed $114 million for a worldwide total of $194 million.

In 2021, Godzilla vs. Kong debuted with $31.6 million and eventually grossed $470.1 million worldwide. In there own films, Kong: Skull Island saw a debut of $61 million, eventually grossing $568.7 million worldwide in 2017. Godzilla opened in 2014 with $93.2 million and grossed just under $525 million worldwide. Godzilla: King of the Monsters debuted with $47.8 million in 2019 and went on to gross $387.3 million worldwide.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire slipped to second place in its second weekend grossing $15.7 million for a domestic gross of $73.4 million. Internationally, the film has lagged grossing just $35.1 million, an increase of $18.7 million over the week. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $108.5 million.

Dune: Part Two came in third place with $11.1 million to bring its domestic total up to $252.4 million. Internationally, the movie added $32.7 million over the week to lift that to $373.7 million for a worldwide gross of $626.1 million.

Kung Fu Panda 4 was fourth with $10.2 million and has grossed $151.7 million domestically so far. Internationally, it added $60.7 million to bring that total to $195.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $347.3 million.

Immaculate rounded out the top five with $3.3 million to bring its domestic total to $11.1 million. Internationally, the film grossed a bit over $2 million for a worldwide total of $13.1 million.

Internationally, the film didn’t fair as well opening with $16.4 million from 7 territories. That delivered $61.6 million for the sequel to the requel. Ghostbusters: Afterlife opened in 2021 with $44 million domestically and went on to gross $204.3 million worldwide.

Dune: Part Two held on to second place with $17.6 million. The movie has now grossed $233.4 million domestically. Over the week, the film grossed $51.6 million internationally to bring that amount to $341 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $574.4 million. The squel has far outpassed the original’s gross of $108.9 million domestically, $325 million internationally, and $433.9 million worldwide.

Kung Fu Panda 4 slipped to third place grossing $16.8 million. The movie has now brought in $133.2 million domestically so far. Internationally, the film added $66.1 million over the week to bring that to $134.9 million. Worldwide the film has grossed $268.2 million.

Immaculate debuted in fourth place with $5.4 million domestically.

Dune: Part Two remained in second place in its third weekend dropping just 37%. The movie grossed $29.1 million domestically to bring that total to $205.3 million. Over the week, the film grossed $78.9 million internationally to bring that amount to $289.4 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $494.7 million.

Arthur the King debuted in third place with $7.5 million domestically.

Imaginary slipped one spot to fourth place with $5.6 million domestically. It has now grossed $19.1 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $2.7 million for a worldwide gross of $21.8 million.

Cabrini rounded out the top five grossing $2.8 million domestically to bring that to a little over $13 million. Internationally, the film grossed $90,132 over the week to bring that to $90,201. Worldwide, the film has grossed $13.1 million.

Internationally, the film grossed $22.2 million for a worldwide total of $80.5 million. In 2008, the first film debuted with $60.2 million and went on to gross $632.1 million worldwide. Kung Fu Panda 2 debuted with $47.7 million in 2011 and went on to gross $665.7 million worldwide. And, in 2016, Kung Fu Panda 3 debuted with $41.3 million and went on to gross $521.2 million. Overall, the fourth film’s opening seems solid and pretty expected based on past history.

Dune: Part Two slipped to second place in its second weekend dropping just 44.2%. The movie grossed $46 million domestically to bring that total to $157 million. Over the week, the film grossed $113.5 million internationally to bring that amount to $210.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $367.5 million.

Imaginary debuted in third place With $10 million domestically. No international number has been reported.

Cabrini was another debuted with premiered in fourth with an estimated $7.6 million domestically and a very specific $69 internationally for a worldwide debut of $7.6 million.

Bob Marley: One Love rounded out the top five with $4.1 million to bring its domestic total to $89.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed $7.9 million to bring that to $71.2 million and $160.5 million worldwide.

Dune: Part Two takes the weekend box office with an epic worthy opening

Dune: Part Two took first place at the weekend box office with $81.5 million. That’s over 10x the second place film. Internationally, the movie did even better with $97 million resulting in a $178.5 million opening weekend.

In contrast, the first Dune opened in 2021 during the pandemic with a little over $41 million. That film also debuted on digital at the same time. It went on to gross $108.9 million domestically, $324.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $433.8 million.

While many will say the original’s day and date digital release impacted the opening weekend, it mimics the Spider-Verse films in which the first debuted much lower than the second indicating it build an audience over time. It was also during the pandemic when a different cost analysis was being made by individuals as to what they’d participate in.

Bob Marley: One Love dipped to second place after holding the top spot for two weeks. It grossed $7.4 million to bring its domestic total to $82.8 million. Internationally, the film added $13.9 million to bring that to $63.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $146.1 million.

Ordinary Angels held steady in third place with $3.9 million to bring its domestic total to $12.6 million. There’s no international total.

Madame Web held on to fourth place with $3.2 million to lift its domestic total to $40.4 million. Internationally, the film added $8.6 million to bring that to $50.6 million. The movie sits at a little over $91 million after three weeks.

The Chosen: S4 Episodes 7-8 rounded out the top five with $3.2 million. There’s no international total.
