Dilbert, Doonesbury & Big Nate Now On ComiXology!

AMP and comiXology celebrate this announcement with a launch featuring a select group of perennial favorites, including office drone hero Dilbert, by Scott Adams, the incomparable and iconic Doonesbury, by Garry Trudeau, and colorful sixth-grade star Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce across comiXology’s entire platform. Additional AMP releases will be available in future months.

This also is a shift from the normal comic book format to including compilations of comic strips.

Doonesbury Abortion Censorship Watch

We reported on Friday that popular political comic strip Doonesbury was being pulled by numerous newspapers this week over it’s taking on the attack on women’s rights and issues like being forced to have a trans-vaginal ultrasound before an abortion.  We’re two strips in and I’m scratching my head as to what the problem with the strips are (then again, I am a damn dirty liberal/hippie).

Warning, these panels do ruin each strips punchlines.

Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau discussed the censorship and strips with the Washington Post on Sunday.  In why he hopped into the debate Trudeau responded:

To ignore it, would have been comedy malpractice.

Doonesbury Gets Censored

Newspapers always stand behind the first amendment, until they don’t.  An Oregon newspaper, the Oregonian, has decided to pull next week’s edition of Garry Trudeau‘s critically hailed and politically relevant comic strip Doonesbury.  In an article explaining their decision the newspaper feels that in their…

judgment, went over the line of good taste and humor in penning a series on abortion using graphic language and images inappropriate for a comics page.

The editors felt it was a “clear call” and follows the decision of other newspapers around the country, including the Los Angeles Times and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

If there’s one thing all journalists and newspapers should stand by, it’s the first amendment.  While the editors might not have agreed with what was being said, or the images depicted, Trudeau has a right to show them and by pulling the strip, the newspaper is censoring them.  Due to their taste, the comic is being pulled.  Not an outcry, not some complaint, just because it doesn’t fit with their world view.  I hope there doesn’t come a day when the Oregonian needs someone to stand up for their right to say what they choose.

Comic Professionals Honor Peers at 2011 Harvey Awards

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND – September 1, 2011 – Comic professionals came together Saturday night, August 20, 2011 to honor their peers during the presentation of the 2011 Harvey Awards, sponsored by DC Comics, comiXology, Insight Studios, IDW, and Painted Visions Comics, Cards & Games. Named in honor of Harvey Kurtzman, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the field of comics and is the only industry award both nominated and selected by comic professionals. First awarded in 1988, it is one of the industry’s oldest and most respected awards.

Scott Kurtz, who is best known for his webstrip, PvP, served as Master of Ceremonies for the third year in a row, bringing his great sense of humor and charisma to the stage.
