CGE Releases a New Statement Regarding Codenames: Back to Hogwarts

Codenames: Back to Hogwarts

In July, CGE announced Codenames: Back to Hogwarts, a new edition/skin of the popular Codenames game. There was a swift condemnation of the game and CGE’s decision citing Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling‘s use of her “Harry Potter wealth” to fund anti-transgender organizations, and she’d likely profit from the game’s licensing. The company then released a rather poor response to the controversy, only fanning the flames further.

On the eve of Gen Con, CGE has released a new statement showing some reflection and understanding as to the reaction to their release announcement.

CGE in their statement acknowledges that by supporting Harry Potter, they are indeed causing harm to the transgender community who Rowling has targeted. A reasonable solution can indeed be difficult in this situation as contracts have been signed and it’s unknown what that entails. Not releasing it would be the obvious solution, though they would face backlash from the regressive community and those who don’t look beyond their own interests. They could also donate all profits towards worthy causes that benefit the transgender community making its sale a fundraiser for the community that is maligned by the individual who would profit from it.

You can read the full statement below:

We’re grateful to everyone who engaged with us over the past few days and took the time to share their perspectives.

At CGE, our aim was never to cause harm, and we acknowledge that, with our recent Codenames announcement, we have. We are working hard within our constraints to find the best way forward and we will update you as soon as we can.

We understand that what we have done ahs caused distress, and are working towards a concrete solution with several members of the affected communities.

Please bear with us as we figure this out.

CGE steps in it with Codenames: Back to Hogwarts. Faces Backlash

Codenames: Back to Hogwarts

In July, CGE announced Codenames: Back to Hogwarts, a new edition/skin of the popular Codenames game. We didn’t cover it and won’t be covering it due to its connection with Harry Potter whose creator is a TERF on a mission of what we see as hatred towards the trans community. We don’t cover Harry Potter in general (not like it’s a comic), and absolutely have not once her beliefs were clear.

The tabletop game community is one of general inclusion where everybody is welcome to sit at the table and enjoy a game. So, for a company to embrace a property so tied into exclusion and bigotry is a bit perplexing. The fact that J.K. Rowling uses her “Harry Potter wealth” to fund anti-transgender organizations, and she’d likely profit from the game’s licensing, is even more infuriating.

To say CGE’s statement in response lacks is an understatement.

When we embarked on creating the newly announced version of Codenames many years ago, it was a dream coming true for many of us at CGE. The vast world of magic featured in the upcoming Codenames has been a source of inspiration. It ignited a passion for learning English and exploring new worlds through reading. It shaped our childhoods, sparked imagination, or gave comfort in difficult times. We know many people around the world share the same sentiment about this universe, even among those who have been hurt by the public views and actions of its creator. Deciding whether those feelings should also transfer to the once-beloved world is up to everyone, and we fully respect and understand those who do not wish to engage with this game. We still believe in the magic of stories and the connection they create between people.

As this is an ongoing conversation, we encourage everyone to approach discussion with care, empathy, and respect—both online and in person.

It calls for “care, empathy, and respect,” though embraces a bigot for profit. They don’t respect their community as they have locked responses to social posts, clearly not wanting to hear the feedback from the community and it should be noted a community that helped make Codenames the success that it is.

WB Games, which has released has released multiple Harry Potter video games, is another example of a company seeing dollar signs, and that’s what it is all about. We have not covered them since 2022 (from what I can tell) for similar reasons. The upcoming Harry Potter television show on HBO has us rethinking any future coverage concerning HBO (though it’s limited as is, so not much of a loss).

We wear our beliefs on our sleeves here at Graphic Policy. Inclusion, treating others well, supporting diversity, those are things baked into the site. We’re not always perfect, but we try our best. There are times we don’t connect, or even know about issues, or slip ourselves. Our beliefs results in editorial decisions to not support and promote releases, companies, or creators that we feel are the antithesis of that.

We’re standing with other sites/influencers/tabletop games against CGE’s decision concerning this release. We won’t be covering CGE until they give a proper response and do what’s right, which is not release the game or donate its profits to charity benefiting the transgender community. We stand with the trans community which has seen hatred and vilification that’s unwarranted and only comes from a place of hate.

We speak with our coverage. We speak with our dollars. There are numerous wonderful organizations and companies that support the trans community. Let’s shine a light on them and lift them up and support them.

Czech Games Launches an App for Letter Jam

Letter Jam

Have you wondered what the codes on the cards in Letter Jam are for? Would you like to add mystery and surprise to your game? Czech Games Edition has you covered with a new app available for iOS and Android.

The game companion app works as a scanner for Letter Jam cards. It prepares a secret word for every player around the table without anyone knowing any of the words! Once the game is over, the app reveals which words were chosen for each player.

The app is available in English, Czech, and German.

If you don’t own the physical game, the app is a reference to give you a better idea of how the game works.

Road to Gen Con 2016: Czech Games Edition’s Codenames: Pictures

Codenames Pictures 1Czech Games Edition has announced that Codenames: Pictures will get a pre-release at Gen Con 2016. This is a follow up to Codenames – their best-selling, Golden Geek Award and Spiel des Jahres winning 2015 title.

Codenames: Pictures uses similar mechanics to the original game, but with a few differences:

  • There are nicely drawn pictures instead of words.
  • The grid is 5 × 4, instead of the original 5 × 5.
  • The rules for valid clues are simpler.
  • Each agent now has its own individual image underlining the spy theme.

The 280 black-gray-white pictures have been carefully picked and designed for interesting game play. The pictures usually contain two or more elements that create witty combinations, tell interesting stories, leave some space for imagination, while still being relatively simple for good playability.

They are the work of great artists like Tomáš Kučerovský, David Cochard, and others.

What are these strange symbols on the map? They are coded locations where spies must contact secret agents!

Two rival spymasters know the agent in each location. They deliver coded messages telling their field operatives where to go for clandestine meetings. Operatives must be clever. A decoding mistake could lead to an unpleasant encounter with an enemy agent – or worse, with the assassin!

Both teams race to contact all their agents, but only one team can win.

The game will be pre-released at Gen Con (CGE room 121, 4th–7th August). If someone wants to be sure you get a copy and becomes one of the very first owners of the game, the pre-order form could be used.

As a bonus for this event, you will get five additional agent and bystander tiles, enabling you to play with the original Codenames grids.

The general release date is September 2016 and will also be available directly from CGE at Spiel in Essen in October.
