Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Basilisk #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new horror series from Cullen Bunn, nuff said.

Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #1 (DC Comics) – The Court of Owls enters the Batman animated world. Yes, please!

By the Horns #2 (Scout Comics) – A revenge story about a woman going after the unicorns that killed her beloved. It’s over the top fantasy adventure and the first issue was so good.

Crush & Lobo #1 (DC Comics) – We want to see where this goes.

DC Horror Presents: The Conjuring: The Lover #1 (DC Comics) – DC gets back into the movie tie-in business and launches a new horror line at the same time!

Everfrost #1 (Black Mask Studios) – Van Louise wants to get off her world but her plans are troubled by a mounting war. We’re intrigued by this sci-fi series and excited to read the debut.

The Nice House on the Lake #1 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The first issue is good. It’s really good. A solid start to this series written by James Tynion IV.

Nocterra #4 (Image Comics) – The series has been a fascinating one as it plays with light and dark. The ride has been solid and we’re excited to see where it all goes considering how the last issue ended.

Out of Body #1 (AfterShock) – A man must figure out who tried to kill him. Problem is he’s in a coma.

Sam & His Talking Gun #3 (Scout Comics) – The title says it all really. The second issue shifted things and delivered an origin story and we want to see where the third takes us.

Serial #4 (Abstract Studio) – This horror series has been growing on us with each issue. We want to see where it all goes as we learn more about the murderer and the young girl tracking it down.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters #1 (Marvel) – The event features a lot of issues but we want to see what happened when Boba Fett attempted to deliver Han to Jabba.

Worst Dudes #1 (Dark Horse) – The series has been teased as over the top gonzo and we want to see if that’s true or not.

In case anyone was wondering, Crush is doing just fine, actually. Sure, she recently walked away from her classmates at the Roy Harper Titans Academy and effectively quit being a Teen Titan in a blaze of glory. And okay, her relationship with her too-good-to-be-true girlfriend Katie is kind of on the rocks, if you want to get all technical about it. Oh, and she recently found out Lobo’s in space jail, but that’s cool, because he’s the worst. OKAY, maybe Crush has some STUFF, but that doesn’t mean she’s gonna DO anything about it, like actually go to space and confront her dad and all her problems, because everything is FINE. …Right?

Crush & Lobo by Mariko Tamaki, Amancay Nahuelpan, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ariana Maher, spinning out of the pages of Teen Titans Academy, will debut on June 1 with a cover by Kris Anka, a Pride variant cover by Yoshi Yoshitani, a 1:25 ratio variant by Christian Ward, plus an exclusive Dan Hipp team variant for participating retailers. In this new eight-issue miniseries publishing between June 2021 and January 2022, Crush, daughter of the Czarnian bounty hunter Lobo, is in full-on self-destruct mode!

And in case anyone was wondering, Crush is doing just fine, actually. When Crush’s trusty travel mug runs dry, a pit stop for caffeine puts Lobo’s daughter face to face with an old enemy whose vicious revenge could put an end to her journey — when it’s only just barely begun! DC Announces DC Pride Anthology and Crush & Lobo

DC has announced new releases coming to store shelves in June. DC Pride is an 80-page anthology comic featuring LGBTQIA+ characters from across the DC Universe. Crush & Lobo is a new eight-issue miniseries written by Mariko Tamaki with art by Amancay Nahuelpan. Crush & Lobo will launch on June 1 and DC Pride will publish on June 8. DC will also publish a series of nine Pride-themed variant covers in June, showcasing DC’s top characters as realized by the comic book industry’s leading artists.

DC Pride #1 will feature LGBTQIA+ characters from all corners of DC’s ever-expanding Universe, including cameos by fan favorites Batwoman, Renee Montoya, Alan Scott, Midnighter, Apollo, Extraño, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Constantine, and more. The DCPride creative teams, and the characters they’re developing stories for, are:

  • Batwoman (Kate Kane) by James Tynion IV & Trung Le Nguyen
  • Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn by Mariko Tamaki & Amy Reeder
  • Midnighter by Steve Orlando & Stephen Byrne
  • Flash of Earth-11 (Jess Chambers) by Danny Lore & Lisa Sterle
  • Green Lantern (Alan Scott) & Obsidian by Sam Johns & Klaus Janson

Additionally, DC Pride #1 will include full-page profiles of DCTV’s LGBTQIA+ characters and the actors who play them, and fans of The CW’s Supergirl will be thrilled to see the first comic book appearance of Dreamer, a trans woman superhero, in a story written by actor Nicole Maines, who plays Nia Nal/Dreamer on Supergirl.

Rounding out the DC Pride anthology is a forward by Marc Andreyko (Love is Love), single-page pin-ups by artists Kris Anka, Sophie Campbell, Mildred Louis, Travis Moore, Nick Robles, and Kevin Wada, with more surprises to come! The DC Pride #1 cover is by Jim Lee, Scott Williams, and Tamra Bonvillain.

DC will also release a series of Pride themed variant covers showcasing DC’s leading characters through the month of June, giving fans the opportunity to purchase comics featuring covers with Batman, Harley, Ivy, Superman, Wonder Woman, and more, all by cutting-edge comic book artists!

DC will also publish GLAAD Media Award-nominated Suicide Squad: Bad Blood by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo on April 27, DC’s gothic LGBTQIA+ romance Poison Ivy: Thorns by Kody Keplinger and Sara Kipin on June 1, and Mariko Tamaki and Yoshi Yoshitani’s highly anticipated YA graphic novel, I Am Not Starfire, will publish on July 27 as part of the publisher’s overall Pride plans in 2021. Lois Lane by Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins, Far Sector by N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell and You Brought Me The Ocean by Alex Sánchez and Julie Maroh have also been nominated for GLAAD Media Awards in 2021!
