Jan Duursema, Garth Ennis, Tom Mandrake, Ron Marz, Al Milgrom, and Craig Rousseau are coming to Baltimore Comic Con

Baltimore Comic-Con returns to the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center on September 8-10, 2023. The convention has announced Jan Duursema, Garth Ennis, Tom Mandrake, Ron Marz, Al Milgrom, and Craig Rousseau as comics guests at the 2023 event. Fans can get their tickets online now.

Jan Duursema‘s first published comics work appeared in Sgt. Rock and Heavy Metal (1979). She began working for DC Comics in 1980 and co-created Arion, Lord of Atlantis which first appeared as a backup story in Warlord. This was followed by work on Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Hawkworld, and Hawkman, as well as a story in Wonder Woman #300.

Her first work for Marvel Comics appeared in Star Wars #92. Other projects for Marvel include X-Factor, The Hulk, Knight of Terra, several X-Men books, and covers for Star Wars titles.

Her work with Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars franchise began with Star Wars: Chewbacca #2. After that, Jan drew several Star Wars series for Dark Horse, including Star Wars: Darth Maul, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Republic, Republic Clone Wars, Star Wars Legacy, and Dawn of the Jedi.

Jan drew and co-wrote Hexer Dusk, a creator-owned sci-fi horror graphic novel with John Ostrander.

Other projects include Elric: The Vanishing Tower for First Comics, Summit for Lion Forge, and two stories for John Carpenter’s HalloweeNight for Storm King. Jan is currently working for Storm King on a soon-to-be-announced project.

Garth Ennis broke into the American Comic scene in 1991, taking over the writing reins on Hellblazer. After a successful four-year run, Ennis moved on to create Preacher, a 66-issue epic that ran from 1995 -2000. In addition to these two ground-breaking series, he also had lengthy runs on DC’s The Demon and Hitman. Ennis also wrote The Boys, a 72-issue story which began at DC’s Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment with issue #7, and which is now a hit series on Amazon Prime Video.

Tom Mandrake has been illustrating comic books and graphic novels for over 40 years. Some of the titles he has illustrated include Batman, The Martian Manhunter, Firestorm, Shazam, and his acclaimed five-year run on The Spectre for DC Comics, The New Mutants, The Punisher, Weapon X, Wolverine, and The Hulk Unchained for Marvel Comics, Grimjack for First Comics, The X-Files for IDW, Sidekick for Joe’s Comics, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter for Titan Comics, and many more.

His creator owned projects include To Hell You Ride with Lance Henriksen and Joe Maddrey through Dark Horse Comics, Creeps with Dan Mishkin through Image Comics, KROS: Hallowed Ground with John Ostrander and Screaming Mandrake: The Nailman and Other Strange Tales, written and illustrated by Tom, and his new project, Wisdom with JM DeMatteis through Spellbound Comics.

He has illustrated such books as GRRM: The George RR Martin Retrospective, the young adult novel The Forest King: The Woodlark’s Shadow, and 100 Deadly Skills: Combat Edition.

Mandrake was art director for the independent film Zombie Prom, which won several awards including Best Comics-Oriented Film and the Judges’ Choice Award at the 2006 Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival in San Diego.

As an instructor at The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Tom teaches Narrative Art and Storytelling. He is also the co-developer of the Kubert Schools Horror Comics correspondence course.

Ron Marz has been writing comics for three decades, starting his career with a lengthy run on Silver Surfer for Marvel. Since then, he has worked for virtually every major publisher and compiled a long list of credits, including stints on Thor for Marvel, Green Lantern and Superboy for DC, Star Wars for Dark Horse, and the historic Marvel vs. DC crossover. He co-created the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner during his landmark run on the title, and recently returned to Marvel for the Silver Surfer: Rebirth series with Ron Lim.

Marz is also known for penning numerous inter-company crossovers, including Green Lantern-Silver Surfer, Batman-Aliens, Batman-Tarzan: Claws of the Catwoman, Green Lantern-Aliens, and Amalgam title Doctor Strangefate. Other credits include his acclaimed run on Witchblade, the Skylanders series for IDW, the Justice League: Endless Winter crossover for DC, Almost American for Aftershock, X-O Manowar at Valiant, and Swamp God in Heavy Metal magazine.

Allen Milgrom was born March 6, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. Al graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in art and design in 1972 and moved to New York. After a year interning at DC Comics with legendary artist Murphy Anderson, Al began inking and, soon after, penciling. He’s worked on lots of comics over the years, (penciling, inking and even some writing) primarily for Marvel Comics, but he also co-created Firestorm at DC Comics and did work at Archie Comics as well as Atlas, Dark Horse, and others. He also did stints as an editor at Marvel and DC.

Married to his wife, Judy, since 1979, they have a daughter and two sons and the cutest grandson and granddaughter ever to walk the earth (of course he may be biased).

Craig Rousseau has been working in the comics industry for over 2 decades, working for all the major publishers, including DC (Impulse, Batman Beyond, Harley Quinn, Batman ‘66) and Marvel (Iron Man Armor Wars, Captain America and the Korvac Saga, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane). Besides Young Hellboy from Dark Horse Comics, he’s currently working on the latest adventures of his creator-owned book, The Perhapanauts (with Todd Dezago) at Black Caravan… and a few other things.

Growing Up Farley chronicles Chris Farley’s childhood journey to superstardom

Z2 Comics has announced Growing Up Farley, a graphic novel about the comedy icon who stormed 30 Rockefeller Plaza to become Saturday Night Live’s breakout star of the ‘90s. Co-written by Chris Farley’s brother, stand-up comedian and actor Kevin Farley, the story provides an intimate portrait into Chris and Kevin’s youthful adventures—from their performances at Red Arrow Camp to sets at the Arc Theatre in Wisconsin, all the way to famed improv institution The Second City in Chicago. 

Kevin Farley joins co-writer Frank Marraffino and artist Ryan Dunlavey capture the Farleys’ late ‘70s/early ‘80s childhood in Maple Bluff, WI, exploring the unique family dynamic that fueled their creativity and adoration of physical comedy. 

After honing such characters as “motivational speaker” Matt Foley at The Second City Theater Group in Chicago, Chris Farley joined the Saturday Night Live cast in 1990, cementing a golden era of humor alongside Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and David Spade. He’d soon ascend into the ranks of celluloid comedy legend through releases including Wayne’s World, Tommy Boy, Beverly Hills Ninja, and Black Sheep.  

Z2 Comics presents Growing Up Farley in standard hardcover and deluxe hardcover editions, set to release Fall 2023. The deluxe hardcover will come with three art prints illustrated by renowned underground artists Craig Rousseau, Fred C. Stresing, and Ryan Dunlavey. Oversized platinum editions will come with an elegant slipcase, the art prints, a “Scotch Oil” trucker hat, a “Scotch Oil” pen, and a “Scotch Oil” ballpoint pen. The “Scotch Oil” company of Madison, Wisconsin was famously owned by Chris and Kevin’s father, Tom Farley, and employed many of the Farley family members over the years. Z2 Comics will also offer 100 super limited platinum editions signed by Kevin Farley.

The Baltimore Comic-Con has announced the addition comic artists and cartoonists Reilly Brown, Mike Grell, Francis Manapul, Craig Rousseau, Stuart Sayger, and Matt Slay. New Jersey native Reilly Brown is a best-selling comic book artist and writer for Marvel and DC Comics, known for bringing a sense of character and personality to the projects on which he works, balancing a combination of light-hearted humor with fast paced superhero action. These talents have been on full display in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Incredible Hercules, Batman/Fortnite, and many other comics, perhaps most notably Deadpool, Marvel’s infamous, rapid-healing merc-with-a-mouth! He is also a pioneer in digital storytelling, utilizing new ways of making comics for tablets and smart phones with his creator-owned series Power Play, as well as several stories for Marvel, including Deadpool: The Gauntlet, Slapstick, and several others. Reilly currently works with Fabian Nicieza on their creator-owned series Outrage, which can be found on Line Webtoon.

Mike Grell is a writer/artist with a uniquely cinematic style of storytelling. His creations include:

In the past, he has written and illustrated Trinity, which stars Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. He has also illustrated Justice League, Legion of Super-Heroes, and Adventure Comics, accompanied by a prolific career as a cover artist. In the past, Francis has also dabbled in the world of television as one of the hosts on History Channel’s Beast Legends, which combined globetrotting adventures and challenging art projects.

Stuart Sayger is a professional illustrator who works primarily in the comic book industry. Recent projects include producing covers for GI Joe, Dejah Thoris, Jeepers Creepers, Vampirella, and he is currently working on covers for KISS and Bloodshot. Past comic book projects include: Walking Dead, X-Files, 30 Days of Night, Xena Warrior Princess, Lego Bionicle, Micronauts, and Rom. Matt Slay has worked in comics for 15 years, but quickly made a name for himself painting variant covers for IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. His dark and earthy watercolors bring a grown-up sense of danger to any character. Born in St. Michaels and raised in Easton, the Maryland native now paints for the sci-fi anthology series Time Traveled Tales with authors such as Timothy Zahn. Matt has generated production art for Marvel Premiere as well as Iron Man 3, and has since provided covers for Six Gun Gorilla and American Mythology’s Equilibrium while writing his own book and cartoon series, 3 Story Dungeon. Matt is represented by Comic Art House.

The Baltimore Comic-Con has announced comic artists Dave Johnson, Pop Mhan, Afua Richardson, Andrew Robinson, Craig Rousseau, John Timms, and Rich Woodall will be attending our 2021 event. Get your tickets now and avoid waiting in additional lines upon your arrival!

An officially ordained Methodist Deacon, “Reverend” Dave Johnson may be best known for his minimalist covers on the noir Vertigo series, 100 Bullets. He has done all 100 covers. He has also done a number of covers for DC Comics, primarily Batman and Detective Comics. Dave also worked with Erik Larsen on the mini-series Superpatriot: Liberty & Justice. He is also known for his work with Marvel on Deadpool. Dave is the principal founder of “Drink and Draw”, a get-together of professional artists that spawned an art book by the same name. Mr. Johnson earned the 2002 Eisner Award for Best Cover Artist. He was also nominated for an Eisner in 2004 for his work on the critically-acclaimed DC Elseworlds miniseries Superman: Red Son, which is now a perennial bestseller in graphic novel form.

Pop Mhan was lucky enough to get his jump into the comics industry under the tutelage of Jim Lee at Wildstorm Productions. Since those early days, his art has graced the pages of comics from Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Top Cow, Dark Horse Comics, and Tokyopop. His recent work can be seen at DC Comics, where he has been penciling licensed properties like Gears of War 3 and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and Marvel Comics on All-New X-Factor and variant covers for Amazing Spider-Man.

Afua Richardson (pronounced “ah-FOO-wah”) is an award-winning American comic book illustrator best known for her work on Marvel’s Black Panther: World of Wakanda. Some of her other works include The Wild Storm, Attack on Titan, X-Men ’92, Captain Marvel, and All-Star Batman to name a few. Afua is also a musician, voice actor, activist, and mentor. As a recipient of the Nina Simone award, she is aptly called a Jane of All trades.

Andrew Robinson has painted covers for all the major publishers, illustrating such titles as Batman Detective, Hawkman, Starman, Superman Rebirth, Iron Man, Hydra, Star Wars, Black Panther, and The JSA. He is a multi-award winning, New York Times best-selling illustrator for his painted work on the graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle. Craig Rousseau has been working in the comics industry for over 2 decades, working for all the major publishers, including DC (Impulse, Batman Beyond, Harley Quinn, Batman ‘66) and Marvel (Iron Man Armor Wars, Captain America and the Korvac Saga, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane). Besides Young Hellboy from Dark Horse Comics, he’s currently working on the latest adventures of his creator-owned book, The Perhapanauts (with Todd Dezago) at Black Caravan… and a few other things.

John Timms was born and raise in Costa Rica. He studied Graphic Design at Universidad de Costa Rica and worked for a long time as an animator, jumping to comics, a medium he always loved, eight years ago. He has worked on different series, including Inhumans and Nova for Marvel, and for DC Comics, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Young Justice, Infinite Frontier, Superman, and he is the current artist for Superman: Son of Kal-El. He lives in Costa Rica with his wife and two daughters.

Rich Woodall is the Co-Publisher of Black Caravan, a Scout Comics Imprint. He is also the creator or co-creator of The Electric Black, Gods of Brutality, Kyrra: Alien Jungle Girl, Johnny Raygun, Sgt. The Perhapanauts: Second Chances #1

Bigfoot! El Chupacabra! The Mothman! Ghosts! The world may be growing smaller every day, but there are dark and terrible things still out there in the woods, shadowy corners full of mystery and dread. Who else are you going to send out to investigate? The Perhapanauts! Our intrepid Heroes travel back in time to investigate one of the most incredible events in paranormal history – Only to find that The Flatwoods Monster is much more than anyone imagined! The adventure begins in The Perhapanauts: Second Chances #1!

I won’t lie, I wanted to read this based solely on the name – I had no idea that this wasn’t the introduction to this world when I picked up the comic, but it really didn’t matter because Perhapanauts had a ring to it I couldn’t ignore.

This comic was an absolute blast.

The Perhapanauts: Second Chances #1 is comprised of three short stories, each written by Todd Dezago with art by Craig Rosseau. Rosseau colors the first story but Fico Renzi takes over for the other two. Each of the three stories are great, and given that there’s a few jokes or lines that went mostly over my head, it’s got me on the hunt for the first volume of Perhapanauts.

The first story in the comic, The Flatwoods Monster, has a decidedly sci-fi twist with the team using their time travel abilities to find out what happened at an alien encounter because they’re curious; it’s light enough to be enjoyed without any foreknowledge of the team, but Dezago leaves just enough to have you think about the events – there’s no shock ending, but what is here is really well done.

Whereas the middle story, Seven Months Earlier, picks up right at the tale of a rescue mission that hasn’t exactly gone according to plan; full of action and fast-paced scenes, Seven Months Earlier has a lot more tension than the other two, and hits you like a slap in the face after the gentle pacing of The Flatwoods Monster.

The comic is rounded out by Fiepick, a relatively quick story that’s told almost entirely in nine by nine grids over four pages. Honestly, it was probably my favourite of the lot because of its simplicity.

Perhapanauts: Second Chances #1 isn’t going to blow you away immediately, but this is the kind of comic that reminds me of why I fell in love with comics in the first place. For me, that’s priceless.

Mike Mignola is Drawing Monsters in a New Documentary Being Kickstarted

Hellboy has appeared in countless graphic novels and comic books, prose novels and short story collections, acclaimed role-playing games and videogames, three live-action films and two animated features, and has inspired countless toys and collectibles. Now, award-winning Hellboy creator Mike Mignola is getting his turn in the spotlight in the all-new documentary Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, which tells the definitive story of one of the most influential and important comic book creators of all time. This feature-length film includes never-before-seen interviews conducted with the legendary creator at his studio, drawing demonstrations, behind-the-scenes footage from comic book conventions, and interviews with some of the most influential people in entertainment, including Neil Gaiman (American Gods), Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar, Victor LaValle (The Ballad Of Black Tom), artist Tara McPherson, and comic book superstars like Vita Ayala, Duncan Fegredo, Fábio Moon, and Joe Quesada. Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is now on Kickstarter for a month-long campaign that runs throughout March.

As one of the most successful independent comic book creators, Mignola has inspired generations of writers and artists. Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters provides an in-depth look at his legacy, from the beginning of his career working as an inker for Marvel Comics to his success with Hellboy. The film features never-before-told revelations from Neil Gaiman about the Mignolaverse and the production of Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy II, and an interview with Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar discussing Mignola’s influence on her creation. 

The documentary features Mythbusters host Adam Savage, Hellboy film actor Doug Jones and actress Vanessa Eichhotlz, novelists Christopher Golden (of the bestselling Ben Walker novels) and Victor LaValle (The Ballad Of Black Tom), Dark Horse Publisher and founder Mike Richardson, Dark Horse Editor Katii O’Brien, Marvel EVP of Creative Development Joe Quesada, comic book writers Vita Ayala (The Wilds), Chris Roberson (Hellboy & The B.P.R.D.) and Thomas Sniegoski (Young Hellboy), and award-winning cartoonist Fábio Moon (Daytripper), as well as interviews and art demonstrations with painter Jason Shawn Alexander, Duncan Fegredo (Hellboy: The Wild Hunt), Michael Avon Oeming (B.P.R.D.: The Soul Of Venice), award-winning colorist Dave Stewart and, of course, Mignola himself.

Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters is being co-directed and produced by Jim Demonakos (founder, LightBox Expo and ECCC) and Kevin Hanna (Clockwork Girl), an American director noted for his work in feature film, animation, comic books, and television.

The Kickstarter campaign features tiers with the Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters film digitally or on Blu-Ray, as well as a Kickstarter exclusive t-shirt, original art, a commission from Mignola himself, the opportunity to receive an executive producer credit on the film, and an incredible Hellboy Portfolio Print Set that is exclusive to the Kickstarter campaign, featuring new 9″x12″ Hellboy prints by Mignola and Dave Stewart, Laurence Campbell, Duncan Fegredo, Alex Maleev, Fábio Moon, Mike Norton, Paolo Rivera, Craig Rousseau, Tim Sale, and Ben Stenbeck. All the artists involved have previously drawn interiors for various Mignolaverse books.

Filming will continue and is scheduled to be completed in the fall/winter of 2021, with the finished film debuting by spring of 2022.

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #1

I love pulp adventures and stories. There’s a fun aspect to them where you accept the over-the-top sequences and enjoy it all. Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #1 kicks off a “lost tale” of a young Hellboy infused with the over-the-top nature of those types of stories.

On their way to South America, Hellboy and Professor Bruttenholm are stranded on a strange island after their plane crashes. The mysterious island is full of the crazy experiences and dangers you’d expect. From giant crabs to attacking gorillas, Hellboy and Bruttenholm must figure out where they are and how to survive.

With a story by Mike Mignola and Thomas Sniegoski, Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #1 is a solid read that you can just pick up and enjoy. It bathes itself in the moments you’d expect from this type of story. It takes its inspiration from the old reels and films full of adventure. It’s the type of story where the action is the focus and the “what” isn’t quite the focus at all. You just roll with what’s thrown at you and enjoy the ride.

Mignola and Sniegoski fills the issue with enthusiasm with a young Hellboy that’s full of excitement. Like a kid of that age, he wants to know what’s going on with glee. A lot of the fun comes from that aspect and it brings a bit of youthful energy to the comic.

Craig Rousseau‘s art is great. Dave Stewart provides colors with lettering by Clem Robins. Much like the story itself, the visuals feel a bit over the top. Things feel exaggerated in a good way adding to the fun aspect of it all. Hellboy comics can fall into the horror genre in both stories and visuals but this issue brings a bit of the lighter side of things.

Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land #1 is an entertaining comic. It’s one you can just pick up and enjoy without having to know anything about the world or character. It shares a lot of its DNA with adventures like Flash Gordon, Indiana Jones, and Tarzan. There’s an aspect where it doesn’t take itself too seriously and knows exactly what it wants to be and that’s a lot of fun.
