Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has a massive drop as Cocaine Bear challenges

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

We said last week it was possible Cocaine Bear would challenge Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania for first place and while there was a gap, it was a bit of a race.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had a massive drop from its debut week falling 69.7% which is huge. It spells troubles for the film going forward. In its second weekend, the movie grossed $32.2 million domestically bringing its total to $167.3 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $75 million to bring that to $196.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $363.6 million. It has a long way to go before it reaches the totals of the first two films and with competition in Creed III opening next week, it’s going to be tough to do.

In second place was Cocaine Bear which opened with $23.1 million. Internationally, the film grossed $5.3 million for a worldwide debut of $28.4 million.

Jesus Revolution opened in third with $15.5 million. There’s no international totals.

Avatar: The Way of Water added $4.7 million coming in fourth place to bring its domestic total to $665.4 million. Internationally, it added about $15 million to its total to bring that to $1.602 billion. Worldwide, the film has grossed $2.267 billion.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish rounded out the top five with $4.1 million to lift its domestic total to $173.4 million. Internationally, it added about $13.6 million to bring that total to $269.1 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $442.5 million.

In comic film news…

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond looks like it didn’t make any gains and the domestic total is steady at $1.6 million. Internationally, it held steady at $9.9 million. The worldwide total is a bit over $11.5 million.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever grossed $57,000 to bring its domestic total to $453.8 million. Internationally, the film added about $2.9 million over the week to bring that to $404.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed over $858.1 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 66 films earning $93,806,846 from 34,736 theaters. That’s quite a dip from last weekend’s $145,008,410 from 34,169 theaters and 55 films. The average earning was $2,700.57 this past weekend, about 33% less the previous weekend’s $4,243.86.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens with a series best

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Marvel is proving that they have a winning brand, no matter word of mouth or critic reviews. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has opened with $106.1 million despite very mixed reviews. The film has only 47% from critics ad 84% from the audience as of writing this article. That’s some of the worst reviews for any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

The opening is the best of the trio of Ant-Man films. The original opened in 2015 with $57.2 million domestically and went on to earn $519.3 million worldwide. That’d be a $72.3 million opening and around $656 million in today’s dollars. The sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, opened with $75.8 million in 2018 and went on to gross $622.7 million. That would be $90.4 million and about $742.5 million in today’s dollars.

Internationally, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania grossed $121.3 million for a worldwide debut of $225.3 million.

The film has a bit of a breather with competition with just Cocaine Bear opening on February 24 having any chance to topple the film next week, but it’d have to be one hell of a showing and drop. Creed III on March 3 will likely strike a knock out punch though trading one film starring Jonathan Majors for another film starring Jonathan Majors.

Avatar: The Way of Water remained in second place losing very little from the previous week. The movie grossed $6.1 million to bring its domestic total to $657.1 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $20 million to bring its international total to $1.586 billion. Worldwide the film has grossed $2.244 billion. It is now #9 for domestic gross passing Jurassic World. It’s about $14 million away from passing Titanic. Worldwide, the film is in third place, having passed Titanic. With $555 million between it and second place, it’s likely it’ll remain in third.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance didn’t last long with the film dropping to third place. While it was just a 35% drop, the film only grossed $5.4 million in its second week lifting its domestic gross to just under $18 million. Internationally, the film grossed about $9.2 million over the week to bring that to $19.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $38.5 million.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish improved a spot moving back into fourth place from last week’s fifth. It grossed $5.3 million to bring its domestic total to $166.1 million. Internationally, the film has grossed $255,572,000 for a worldwide total of $423.4 million.

Knock at the Cabin rounded out the top five with an estimated $3.9 million to bring its domestic gross to $30.4 million. Over the week, the film grossed about $3.6 million internationally for $16.9 million there and a worldwide total of $47.9 million.

In comic film news…

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond looks like it didn’t make any gains and the domestic total is steady at $1.6 million. Internationally, it gained about $100,000 to increase it to $9.9 million. The worldwide total is a bit over $11.5 million.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever grossed $34,000 to bring its domestic total to $453.7 million. Internationally, the film added about $2.1 million over the week to bring that to $401.4 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed over $855.2 million.

Black Adam‘s domestic gross looks like it hasn’t shifted and stands at $168.2 million. Over the week the international remained steady at $224.8 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed just under $393 million.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time looks to have ended its run. Domestically, it has grossed $810,744. Internationally, the film gained a little and is now just under $93 million for a worldwide gross of $93.8 million.

The week’s overall box office success…

Numbers have 55 films earning $145,008,410 from 34,169 theaters. That’s over double last weekend’s $52,627,515 from 35,391 theaters and 59 films. The average earning was $4,243.86 this past weekend, about triple the previous weekend’s $1,487.03.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance wins a slow weekend box office

Magic Mike's Last Dance

Magic Mike still has some moves left as the film took the top spot at the weekend box office. Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third film in the series, earned an estimated $8.2 million domestically and $10.4 million at the international box office for a worldwide total of $18.6 million.

It’s a rough opening compared to the original which earned $39.1 million in 2012 (going on to earn $167.3 million worldwide) and below the sequel’s $12.9 million opening in 2015 (it went on to earn $117.8 million worldwide). Unless there’s a big boost, the film may struggle to make it to $100 million based on the performance of previous films.

Avatar: The Way of Water came in second place with an estimated $6.9 million. Domestically, the film has grossed $646.9 million. Over the week, it grossed about $28 million internationally to lift that to $1.566 billion. The film has now grossed $2.213 billion. It is still #10 for domestic gross with about $6.1 million to go to move up a spot. Worldwide, the film is in fourth place, about $3.9 million behind the third place Titanic. With a release of that film, and if it counts towards the previous total, it’s hard to say when it’ll pass it, but it likely will.

Speaking of Titanic… the 25th anniversary release came in third with an estimated $6.4 million. The film also grossed $15.9 million internationally to deliver a $22.3 million gross so far.

80 for Brady slipped to fourth from second with an estimated $6 million to bring its domestic total to just under $25 million. There’s still no international gross.

Knock at the Cabin dipped a little over 61% from the previous weekend going from first to fifth. The film added about $5.5 million to its domestic total to bring that to $23.4 million. Over the week, the film added about $6.3 million to its international total to bring that to $13.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $36.8 million after two weeks.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever held at #17 and grossed $75,000 to bring its domestic total to $453.6 million. Internationally, the film added about $300,000 over the week to bring that to $389.3 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed over $842.9 million.
