Moana Fends off an Office Christmas Party

moana-posterDisney’s Moana held off newcomer Office Christmas Party to three-peat at the box office. The film earned an estimated $18.8 million at the domestic box office this weekend to bring its domestic total to $145 million.

Office Christmas Party debuted in second place bringing in an estimated $17.5 million. With a budget of just $45 million, the film should do fine in the long run. It did about the same amount, $16.4 million, overseas where it debuted in 49 markets.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them dropped to third place adding $10.8 million to its total. The film has now earned $680 million worldwide.

Also dropping one spot was Arrival which added $5.6 million to its total. It came in fourth and last weekend it was third. Domestically the film has earned $81.5 million.

Doctor Strange rounds out the top five. It held on to the fifth position from last week by earning $4.6 million. Domestically the film has brought in $222.4 million. Worldwide the film is at $645.8 million after six weeks. The movie is ninth domestically and seventh worldwide for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (out of 14). We’ll have a greater analysis in two hours of the film and the rest of 2016’s comic adaptations.

Next weekend brings the juggernaut that is Rogue One which will absolutely top the box office, it’s just a question of how much it will earn.

Moana Repeats in First Place During a Slow Movie Weekend

moana-posterIt was a slow post-Thanksgiving weekend and Moana repeated in first place without much as far as new competition. The film earned $28.4 million in its second week. So far the film has grossed $119.9 million domestically after two weeks and $177.4 million worldwide.

In second place was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which was second place again. The film added $18.6 million to its domestic total which is at $183.5 million. Worldwide the film is at $607.9 million and with a $180 million budget, that’s pretty solid. Still, it lags far behind other Harry Potter films and has a way to go even without adjusting those films for inflation.

To round out the top five, Arrival improved over last week moving from fifth to third and adding $7.3 million to its domestic total. The film added a bunch of theaters which helps explain the improvement. That and positive word of mouth is helping drive the film. Allied remained in fourth with $7.1 million. The film is a slow burn and its doubtful it’ll make back its $85 million budget. Finally, Doctor Strange caps it off with $6.5 million and dropping from third to fifth. The film sits at $215.3 million domestically and $634.9 million worldwide. We’ll have more in an hour going over the film and other comic films of the year.

There was much as far as new films. Incarnate opened in ninth with just $2.7 million. Believe was #17 with $602,519, Jackie opened in five theaters and earned $275,000, the best per theater average, and finally Things to Come was #33 with $33,090 from 3 theaters.

This coming weekend sees Office Christmas Party, Miss Sloane, and La La Land open.

Fantastic Beasts Had a Number 1, But Not a Fantastic Opening

fantastic-beasts-and-where-to-find-them-2016When is a $75 million number one weekend opening not something to go crazy over? When you’re the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. That film earned an estimated $75 million to come in first place this weekend. That’s the lowest opening ever for the Wizarding World and the last film was five years ago. The average opening is a little over $90 million.

The film earned an “A” CinemaScore and it looks like 55% of the audience was over the age of 35 which would indicate it was likely older Harry Potter fans that showed up for the film and not younger fans.

The film opened Wednesday in international markets and has so far grossed $143.3 million.

In second place was Doctor Strange who was in first place these past two weekends. That film earned an estimated $17.7 million to bring its domestic total to $181.5 million. The film also earned $26 million to its international total to bring that to $390 million. We’ll have more analysis of that film and comic films this year in an hour.

In third was Trolls which earned an estimated $17.5 million, Arrival was fourth with $11.8 million, and Almost Christmas was fifth with $7.04 million.

Two new films debuted in the top ten. The Edge of Seventeen earned an estimated $4.83 million for seventh, and Bleed for This was eighth with $2.36 million.
