Games Workshop Pre-Order Preview: Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – Skaventide is coming!

Games Workshop previously announced the release date so it should be no surprise that Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – Skaventide is next week’s release… and pretty much the only release. The game is the fourth edition of Age of Sigmar and pre-orders will be open for two weeks.

Skaventide features 74 new miniatures, Stormcast Eternals and Skaven.

The Stormcast Eternals comprise 24 miniatures, with a command staff made up of an imperious Lord-Vigilant on Gryph-Staker, a solemn Lord-Terminos with attendant Memorian, a Lord-Veritant with Gryph-crow, and a Knight-Questor. The rank and file are made up of 10 indomitable Liberators , alongside 3 battle-hardened Reclusians with their Memorians, and 3 soaring Prosecutors.

The Skaven are led by a scheming Claw-lord on Gnaw-Beast and a Grey Seer from the Masterclan, while a Warlock Engineer watches over the complement of Skryre weapons. The crowning jewel of this collection of chaotic contraptions is the Ratling Warpblaster, which is supported by 3 Warplock Jezzails. 40 Clanrats make up the bulk of this horde, and 3 hulking Rat Ogres provide the muscle.

Not just packed with two armies it has everything you need to play including the 144-page Spearhad: Fire and Jade book, a double-sided game board, four pieces of terrain, 3″ and 6″ range rules, cards you need to play, and some dice. There’s also Core and Advanced rules, the First Blood battlepack, and the Path to Glory battlepack. There’s also a deck of 17 cards which contain the season rules and battle plans for the 2024-25 Matched Play Season General’s Handbook.

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Skaventide

And… pre-order bonuses!

If you order from the Warhammer webstore you’ll get a set of six metal objective tokens. If you get it at the local Warhammer store on release, you’ll get a set of command point tokens. Pre-ordering from independent stores, you’ll get a hardback notebook themed after Skaventide.

As has become tradition, Black Library will be releasing a tie-in book, Skaventide by Gary Kloster.

Deep in the heart of the Skaven apocalypse, the Stormcast Eternals of the Ruination Chamber fight for their survival, but within this blighted wasteland lies a prize – a lost Stormcast Eternal who carries within him ancient and forbidden knowledge.

There’s a regular edition, and a royal blue Special Edition with screen printed artwork in silver foil on the front and spine with blue page edges and a blue ribbon bookmark. There’s also full-color art inside and it’s signed by the author.

Games Workshop Returns to Comics with Marvel

Games Workshop has had a spotty history with comics with runs that come and go and rotate publishers. Comics based on GW properties are returning as the company is teaming up with Marvel for a whole new era. Details as far as properties and what creative teams have not been announced.

GW, with popular games like Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, and more, has deep and rich game fluff ripe for use in greater media. The game publisher is considered to have untapped potential which is finally getting the spotlight. On top of the comic announcement, a television show has been announced based on one of the characters from Warhammer 40k.

This isn’t the first time GW properties have wound up in Marvel comics, though previously it wasn’t so legal.

Comics began being published through Black Library, some of which were award-winning. BOOM! Studios picked up the license in 2006 and lost it about mid-2009. Titan Comics began publishing comics in 2016 which ended in 2018.

New comics come to shelves autumn 2020.

PETA Takes Aim at Games Workshop and Warhammer

peta-facebook-logoPETA, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, has sent a letter to Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree asking for fur garments to be removed from their “Warhammer characters.” Warhammer is two games and settings Warhammer Fantasy/Warhammer: Age of Sigmar are fantasy based and Warhammer 40K is a futuristic grimdark world. Both games are tabletop miniature games where players build physical model kits creating an army to battle their opponents. Both games’ stories are violent featuring over the top violence, demons, fascist rules, xenophobia, and genocide. But, it’s the treatment of make believe animals that has PETA up in arms, not the Slaanesh hoards wearing human skin.

The letter reads:

I’m writing to you on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to ask that you consider removing “fur” garments from your Warhammer characters at the next opportunity.

From the mighty Leman Russ and Horus Lupercal to Chaos Warriors and the Sisters of Silence, Warhammer features an abundance of characters who wear what appear to be animal pelts, which just doesn’t add up. These battle-hardened warriors are known for their martial prowess – but wearing the skins of dead animals doesn’t take any skill.

Indeed, nothing on the bloody battlefields of Warhammer’s war-torn world could match the horrific reality that foxes, minks, rabbits, and other living beings experience at the hands of the fur trade. Those killed for their fur typically first endure a bleak life inside a tiny, filthy wire cage before being electrocuted, drowned, or even skinned alive. Or they may be out minding their business and get caught in horrific bone-crushing steel-jaw traps – often languishing for days before eventually dying of hunger, thirst, or blood loss.

And while we appreciate that these are fictional characters, draping them in what looks to be a replica of a dead animal sends the message that wearing fur is acceptable – when, in fact, it has no more place in 2017 than it would in the year 40,000.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you.

5th-edition-njalWhile the letter is interesting it shows a lack of knowledge of the worlds Games Workshop has created, either ignoring the fantasy setting or conflating the two games, not to mention some of the claims… they clearly haven’t read any of Chaos’ tomes. Some of that makes what happens to animals fuzzy happy times.

The tabletop miniature game’s world has also been depicted in novels, animated film, and comic books. Currently, Titan Comics is publishing two series set in the world.

This isn’t the first time PETA has stepped into the world of geekdom. The organization has criticized various video games in the past and even used video games to help promote their cause. I look forward to their eventual tabletop miniature wargame rules set.
