Russ Braun, Jeff Dekal, Trish Forstner, Kevin Maguire, Afua Richardson, and Joe Staton are coming to Baltimore Comic Con

The 2025 Baltimore Comic-Con comes to the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center this October 17-19, 2025. The Baltimore Comic-Con has announced new comics guests Russ Braun, Jeff Dekal, Trish Forstner, Kevin Maguire, Afua Richardson, and Joe Staton appearing at this year’s event!. Tickets are now on sale — sign up for the mailing list to receive announcements as they are made.

Russ Braun has been drawing comics for over 30 years, with time out for a 7-year stint with Walt Disney Feature Animation. Known for his expressive characters and storytelling on everything from Batman, Swamp Thing, Fables, and Jack of Fables, Russ is best known for his frequent collaborations with Garth Ennis, including The Boys, Night Witches, their creator-owned book, Jimmy’s Bastards, and its new sequel Jimmy’s Little Bastards.

Jeff Dekal is a freelance illustrator who was born and raised in South Florida. Drawing since childhood, the introduction to graffiti while in high school gave the first serious meaning to Jeff’s art and is also where he adopted the alias, Dekal. After being educated about art history in college, he was launched into an obsession centered around figurative work. Jeff then began working as an illustrator, drawing album covers for indie musicians and illustrating editorial articles for local newspapers and magazines. He slowly worked his way into the comic industry and has now become a prominent cover artist for over a decade. Jeff’s clients include Marvel, DC, AWA, Image, BOOM!, and many other independent publishers.

Trish Forstner is an Eisner and Ringo Award-nominated cartoonist from Baltimore, Maryland. She brings a lifetime of experience creating fun, lovable, and believable characters. She’s been drawing since she could hold a pencil. Trish loves classic animation and has drawn influence from many sources, particularly classic 80s and 90s toons. Her style has been compared to Don Bluth, Walt Disney, and Warner Bros., but she likes to think she’s found a way to separate herself from those comparisons while still drawing inspiration from them. Her love of expression and emotion is on full display in any work she creates. You’ve most recently seen her work in Image Comics’ ongoing scary “cat-pocalypse” series Feral and in the Eisner Award-nominated Stray Dogs. She is also an amazing cover artist for Dynamite’s Disney comics, from Darkwing Duck to Zootopia! From her beginnings as an artist for My Little Pony all the way to award nominated co-creator of Stray Dogs and Feral and everything in-between, Trish is sure to draw something you’ll love!

Kevin Maguire is an artist who is known for his work on Justice League International, Man Of Steel, Adventures Of Captain America, Batman Confidential, Defenders, and so many more it would just seem like bragging. You probably know him as the guy who draws goofy facial expressions. In his spare time, he enjoys yoga, IMAX films, and tweeting.

Afua Richardson (pronounced “ah-FOO-wah”) is an award-winning American comic book illustrator best known for her work on Marvel’s Black Panther: World of Wakanda. Some of her other works include The Wild Storm, Attack on Titan, X-Men ’92, Captain Marvel, and All-Star Batman to name a few. Afua is also a musician, voice actor, activist, and mentor. As a recipient of the Nina Simone award, she is aptly called a Jane of All trades.

Joe Staton has been drawing comics since he started working for Charlton Comics in 1971, where he co-created E-Man and Michael Mauser. Though the bulk of his work has been for DC Comics, at last count, Staton has worked for at least 30 publishers and 100 different editors. Among his many comics credits are Action Comics, Green Lantern, The Legion, Classics Illustrated, and various incarnations of Batman. During his time on Green Lantern, he co-created several GLs, including Kilowog, Arisia, and Salakk. He also designed GL Guy Gardner’s “bad boy” look. More recently, with his writer-wife Hilarie, he produces medical comics such as Pete Learns All About Crohn’s and Colitis and Amy Goes Gluten-Free. In 1998, he received the Eisner Award for his work on World’s Finest: The Superman-Batman Adventures. He penciled over 100 issues of the Cartoon Network’s Scooby Doo comic. He illustrated a graphic novel adaptation of Ayn Rand’s Anthem for NAL and a graphic biography of Ronald Reagan. Since 2011, working with writer Mike Curtis, Joe was the regular artist for the long-running Dick Tracy newspaper strip (available online at www.gocomics.com/dicktracy). Dick Tracy received Harvey Awards in 2013, 2014, and 2015 for Best Syndicated Strip or Feature.

Baltimore Comic Con announces Brett Breeding, Jim Calafiore, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Dan Jurgens, Afua Richardson, and John K. Snyder III as guests

Baltimore Comic-Con will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on September 20-22, 2024 at the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center. The convention has announced comics guests including Brett Breeding, Jim Calafiore, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Dan Jurgens, Afua Richardson, and John K. Snyder III as guests for its 25th Anniversary event! Purchase your tickets online now.

Brett Breeding has enjoyed more than forty years as a comic book artist, illustrating and creating characters for Marvel and DC Comics. Primarily known for his finished inks over pencilers George Perez, Ron Frenz, Kerry Gammill, and Dan Jurgens, Brett has also done penciling, and traditional and computer coloring, as well as story development and plotting. He is a co-creator of DC Comics characters Doomsday, Blaze, Lord Satanus, and Shadowdragon. Brett has worked on many titles for Marvel and DC Comics, but is most recognized for his work on the Superman titles, notably the “Death of Superman” storyline, as well as the Spider-Man titles, The Mighty Thor, The Avengers, and West Coast Avengers. While working on Thor #390 with Ron Frenz, Brett originated the idea that Steve Rogers would be worthy to wield Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, and Ron and writer Tom DeFalco made it a key part of the story. Over 30 years later, Brett’s idea would be immortalized on the big screen as a key moment in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. Brett’s recent works include licensing art for DC and Warner Brothers Consumer Products along with children’s books and digital interactive iPad apps featuring Superman and Batman for WB Global Publishing.

In 30-plus years working in comics, Jim Calafiore has worked on Peter David’s Aquaman, Judd Winnick’s Exiles, Gotham Underground with Frank Tieri, Red Lanterns with Charles Soule, various Batman books, Deadpool, and Black Panther.

After a run on the critically-acclaimed Secret Six with Gail Simone, they reunited for their creator-owned success Leaving Megalopolis. He’s currently working on his creator-owned supernatural-comedy saga, NED, Lord of the Pit.

Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez was born in Spain and began drawing comics professionally in Argentina at age 13. In the 1960s, he drew romance titles for Charlton Comics. Garcia-Lopez came to the U.S. in 1974 and started working for DC Comics, drawing series such as Superman, Batman, Hawkman, Tarzan, and Jonah Hex. His other notable work includes Atari Force, Deadman, New Teen Titans, and On The Road to Perdition. Since 1982, Garcia-Lopez has designed and pencilled the definitive versions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and many other characters for various DC Comics style guides, which are created for licensees only. His style guide art has been seen on countless DC Comics licensed products and is still being used today.

Dan Jurgens began his comics career in 1981 as artist on DC Comics’ The Warlord. He then created, wrote, and drew Booster Gold and added Flash Gordon, Legion of Super-Heroes, Green Arrow, Justice League America, and many more titles to his résumé. Most notably, he logged a very long run as writer/artist on Superman, including the best-selling Death of Superman, for which he won the National Cartoonists Society Award. Jurgens followed that up by writing and drawing the mega-hit crossover Zero Hour, which redefined the DC Universe. He drew several other crossovers as well, such as Armageddon 2001, DC Versus Marvel, and both wrote and drew Superman/Aliens and Superman/Fantastic Four.

At Marvel Comics, he wrote and/or drew The Sensational Spider-Man, Iron Fist, The Mighty Thor, and Captain America. Jurgens then returned to DC Comics to write and/or draw Green Arrow, Justice League International, Firestorm, and more. He then revived the true Superman in the Superman: Lois and Clark series, which featured the establishment of Superman’s son, Jonathan Kent, as a major DC character. After that, Dan had long stints writing Action Comics, Batman Beyond, and Nightwing.

Over the past couple of years, Dan has drawn a number of covers for Marvel Comics while also writing and drawing a special story for Thor #750. At DC, he brought the popular pair of Blue Beetle and Booster Gold together for the Blue & Gold miniseries, wrote and drew the 30th anniversary Death of Superman Special, and the Doom Rising series in Action Comics, which featured young Jon Kent. His most recent project is The Bat-Man: First Knight from DC’s Black Label imprint, telling the story of Bat-Man as he was originally presented, back in 1939.

John K. Snyder III is an Eisner-nominated illustrator and writer of comic books and graphic novels. Creator of the independent comic series Fashion In Action, and adapter/illustrator of the graphic novel adaptation of Grand Master mystery writer Lawrence Block’s classic novel Eight Million Ways to Die published by IDW, he has worked for nearly every major publisher including DC, Dark Horse, Marvel, IDW, and many others. Snyder worked on Suicide Squad during its classic 1980’s run with writers John Ostrander and Kim Yale, and provided covers for the 2007 Suicide Squad mini-series. Along with Matt Wagner, Snyder co-created the Pieter Cross version of Doctor Mid-Nite for DC and Lady Zorro for Dynamite. Snyder also worked with Wagner on the epic Grendel: God and the Devil storyline. John’s recent work includes work for The Doors’ graphic novel anthology, Morrison Hotel written by Leah Moore and published by Z2 Comics, and a return to Suicide Squad with new covers for DC Comics to coincide with the release of the Warner Brothers movie. John’s future work includes all-new Fashion In Action adventures to be published by Clover Press. John encourages all artists and writers, young and old, to actively pursue their own creator-owned aspirations.

The Baltimore Comic-Con has announced the return of comic creators Jo Chen, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Trevor Mueller, Tom Raney, Afua Richardson, and Stuart Sayger. Jo Chen is an award-winning comic book artist who began working professionally at age 18 and whose covers and interiors include Dark Horse’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Marvel’s Runaways, Thor: Son of Asgard, and New Avengers, Wildstorm’s Racer X and Robotech, UDON’s Street Fighter, and Dreamwave’s Darkminds Macropolis. More recently, Jo, working under the pen name TogaQ, has produced the stark, noir-flavored interiors and covers for her popular, creator-owned adult manga In These Words, which is published in multiple languages and countries. Jo has also produced covers for Dark Horse’s Hellboy, Firefly/Serenity, Kull the Conqueror, and Star Wars: Invasion properties, Image’s Samurai’s Blood, DC’s Robin, Superman Stranded, and Jack Kirby’s The Demon, Radical’s Incarnate, and Top Cow’s Battle of the Planets, not to mention the package art for XBOX’s Fable video games.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson broke into comics in 2015 with the BOOM! Studios miniseries Last Sons of America and Warlords of Appalachia. These projects led him to DC Comics and Marvel, where he would write such characters/titles as Aquaman, Captain America, Batman, Marvel Zombies: Resurrection, Extreme Carnage, and his creator-owned epic fantasy series, DC Black Label’s The Last God. He took over the Superman and Action Comics titles in 2020, and currently writes the ongoing Alien series at Marvel Comics. He has also been published with Archaia, IDW, Aftershock, Dynamite, and Scout Comics.

Trevor Mueller is a comic writer from Chicago. His latest projects are Nexus Point and Re-Possessed (Webtoon Originals). He has also written the multi-Harvey Award nominated Albert the Alien. He has contributed stories to several anthologies, including Reading With Pictures (Andrews McMeel). He has also self-published several other works including Consumer, Beyond the Pillars, Los Ojos, and The Witches of E Wick Blvd.

Trevor also appears on occasional episodes of the popular web series Nostalgia Critic.

Trevor currently lives in Chicago with his family; his cat, Waffles, might be planning for world domination.

Tom Raney has spent much of his career working for the mid- to large-size publishers in the comics industry. He has contributed to many of Marvel’s titles, from Thor to X-Men, spent some time with Valiant’s relaunched titles, and Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars among many other titles and publishers. He recently wrapped up a year-long run on DC Comics’ Green Lantern.

Stuart Sayger is a professional illustrator who works primarily in the comic book industry. Known for his moody atmospheric art, Sayger first broke into the industry as the creator of Shiver in the Dark, producing the comic independently from start to finish. Recent projects include producing covers for GI Joe, Dejah Thoris, Jeepers Creepers, Vampirella, and he recently worked on covers for KISS and Bloodshot. Past comic book projects include: Walking Dead, X-Files, 30 Days of Night, Xena Warrior Princess, Lego Bionicle, Micronauts, and Rom. Writer Steven Grant is a longtime fixture of comics, debuting at Marvel in 1978 but gaining notoriety several years later with The Punisher Mini-Series. He has written numerous characters for numerous publishers, including Spider-Man, The Avengers, Batman, Superman, Grifter, Mickey Mouse, American Flagg!, Vampirella, Stone Cold Steve Austin, GI Joe, Masters Of The Universe, and many, many others. His own creations include Whisper at Capital, revamps of Manhunter and Challengers of The Unknown at DC, Enemy at Dark Horse, Edge (with Gil Kane) at Malibu/Bravura, and 2 Guns at BOOM! Studios, which became a Universal film starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. He created the pivotal crime comic Badlands for Vortex Comics, and partnered with Mike Zeck on the Epic graphic novel Punisher: Return To Big Nothing and their original crime mini-series Damned at Jim Lee’s Homage. He has also written film criticism, music reviews, novels, short stories, the long-running online column Permanent Damage, and is executive producing media projects based on his creations. He currently lives in the desert somewhere outside Las Vegas.

Trevor Mueller is a comic writer from Chicago. His latest project is the Webtoon Original series, Nexus Point, premiering in 2022. He has also written the multi-Harvey Award nominated Albert the Alien. He has contributed stories to several anthologies, including Reading With Pictures (Andrews McMeel), Killer Queen and What Fresh Hell Is This (Red Stylo Media), Best of Omega Comics Presents (Pop! Goes the Icon), and Aw Yeah Comics. He has also self-published several other works including Consumer, Beyond the Pillars, and The Witches of E Wick Blvd. Trevor also appears on occasional episodes of the popular web series Nostalgia Critic. Trevor currently lives in Chicago with his family; his cat, Waffles, might be planning for world domination.

Tom Raney has spent much of his career working for the mid- to large-size publishers in the comics industry. He has contributed to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, Valiant’s relaunched titles, and Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars among many other titles and publishers. In recent history, his artwork can be seen within the pages of DC Comics’ Threshold, Marvel’s Incredible Hulk, and Titan Comics’ Monster Massacre hardcover collection.

Afua Richardson (pronounced “ah-FOO-wah”) is an award-winning American comic book illustrator best known for her work on Marvel’s Black Panther: World of Wakanda. Some of her other works include The Wild Storm, Attack on Titan, X-Men ’92, Captain Marvel, and All-Star Batman to name a few. Afua is also a musician, voice actor, activist, and mentor. As a recipient of the Nina Simone award, she is aptly called a Jane of All trades.

John K. Snyder III is the creator of the groundbreaking 1980’s series, Fashion In Action. John’s latest work is a graphic novel adaptation of world-renowned writer Lawrence Block’s detective noir classic novel, Eight Million Ways to Die, published by IDW. He has worked for nearly every major publisher, including DC, Dark Horse, Marvel, IDW, and many others. Snyder worked on Suicide Squad during its classic 1980’s run with writers John Ostrander and Kim Yale, and provided covers for the 2007 Suicide Squad mini-series. Along with Matt Wagner, Snyder co-created the Pieter Cross version of Doctor Mid-Nite for DC and Lady Zorro for Dynamite. Snyder also worked with Wagner on the epic Grendel: God and the Devil storyline. He has also provided numerous covers for a wide range of titles, including Harlan Ellison’s Phoenix Without Ashes (IDW). Fashion In Action has been recently collected by Hope Nicholson’s Bedside Press. His other 1980’s creator-owned series (along with co-creators Timothy Truman and Michael H. Price), Leo Kragg: The Prowler, is also available in a two-volume set from Cremo Press. John encourages all artists, young and old, to actively pursue their own creator-owned aspirations.

Keith Williams, comic book inker, enrolled in the School of Visual Arts in New York City from 1976 to 1980. Keith received his Bachelor of Fine Art in Media Arts and studied under Will Eisner, the creator of The Spirit comic strip. With the help of Marvel comic book artist and mentor Don Perlin, Keith started working for Marvel Comics in 1982 as a background inker. He worked for inkers including Joe Sinnott and Mike Esposito. At Marvel, he became the first John Romita Raider, an art correction group. Keith later became an assistant editor under Jim Owlsley (Christopher Priest) on the Spider-Man group of books. The two became the first all-black editorial team in Marvel’s history. He later became John Byrne’s background artist on Alpha Flight, The Hulk, Superman, and Action Comics. Keith began inking regularly on Web of Spider-Man, which lasted for four years. In between that time and after, he worked on many other books at Marvel, including Silver Surfer, She-Hulk with John Byrne, Warlock, Quasar with Greg Capullo, Star Trek, and the X-Men. At Dark Horse Comics, he worked on The Mask and Walter with artist Doug Manke, and Star Wars Droids. At DC Comics, he was on Superman, and the Lobo/Mask graphic novel with Doug Manke. For Valiant, he worked on Quantum and Woody and the covers of X-O Manowar. At Moonstone Comics, he was on The Kolchak Night Stalker Chronicles, Buckaroo Banzai, and Domino Lady. For ten years, he had worked on The Phantom for King Features Syndicate. And at Avatar Press, he inked Lady Death and Crossed covers, a Crossed webisode comic, “Wish You Were Here”, and the cover and interiors of the comic book Uber. He has also inked Avatar Press’ published graphic novel Max Brooks’ Harlem Hellfighters. And recently, he has inked over Ron Frenz pencils for Marvel’s Thor the Worthy one-shot book.

“The Artist’s Experience: from Brotherman to Batman” shares insights into the creative process of top African-American comic book artists

The Society of Illustrators has announced a dynamic new installation coming to the museum that delves between the pages of comic books and explores the artists’ process. “The Artist’s Experience: From Brotherman to Batman” on display from June 15 through October 29, 2022. The exhibit celebrates some of the top African-American artists in the comic book industry, and was co-curated by renowned culture journalist and writer Karama Horne and Eisner Award-nominated artist and writer Shawn Martinbrough, whose work will be featured along with over sixteen other talented artists. 

This special exhibition showcases the works of independent and mainstream creators, such as Dawud Anyabwile, founder of the landmark Brotherman Comics, the longest running, independently published American Black comic book and Eisner Award-winning, DC Comics and Marvel artist Denys Cowan, co-founder of Milestone Media.

Also featured are Eisner Award-winning artists Afua Richardson, Alitha Martinez and John Jennings, as well as veteran artists Larry Stroman and Darryl Banks.

Artwork from award-winning artist Ronald Wimberly, founder of the experimental art magazine THE LAAB (whose Prince of Cats graphic novel is currently being adapted to film by Spike Lee), Khary Randolph, Jamal Igle, Micheline Hess, Sanford Greene, Eric Battle, Marcus Williams, Chuck Collins, Damion Scott and Robyn Smith will all be on display, as well.

“The Artist’s Experience: From Brotherman to Batman” runs from June 15, 2022 to October 29, 2022, with a Juneteenth Opening Night Celebration on June 16th from 6pm-9pm at the Society of Illustrators located at 128 East 63rd Street New York, NY.

An officially ordained Methodist Deacon, “Reverend” Dave Johnson may be best known for his minimalist covers on the noir Vertigo series, 100 Bullets. He has done all 100 covers. He has also done a number of covers for DC Comics, primarily Batman and Detective Comics. Dave also worked with Erik Larsen on the mini-series Superpatriot: Liberty & Justice. He is also known for his work with Marvel on Deadpool. Dave is the principal founder of “Drink and Draw”, a get-together of professional artists that spawned an art book by the same name. Mr. Johnson earned the 2002 Eisner Award for Best Cover Artist. He was also nominated for an Eisner in 2004 for his work on the critically-acclaimed DC Elseworlds miniseries Superman: Red Son, which is now a perennial bestseller in graphic novel form.

Pop Mhan was lucky enough to get his jump into the comics industry under the tutelage of Jim Lee at Wildstorm Productions. Since those early days, his art has graced the pages of comics from Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Top Cow, Dark Horse Comics, and Tokyopop. His recent work can be seen at DC Comics, where he has been penciling licensed properties like Gears of War 3 and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and Marvel Comics on All-New X-Factor and variant covers for Amazing Spider-Man.

He is a multi-award winning, New York Times best-selling illustrator for his painted work on the graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle. Craig Rousseau has been working in the comics industry for over 2 decades, working for all the major publishers, including DC (Impulse, Batman Beyond, Harley Quinn, Batman ‘66) and Marvel (Iron Man Armor Wars, Captain America and the Korvac Saga, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane). Besides Young Hellboy from Dark Horse Comics, he’s currently working on the latest adventures of his creator-owned book, The Perhapanauts (with Todd Dezago) at Black Caravan… and a few other things.

John Timms was born and raise in Costa Rica. He studied Graphic Design at Universidad de Costa Rica and worked for a long time as an animator, jumping to comics, a medium he always loved, eight years ago. He has worked on different series, including Inhumans and Nova for Marvel, and for DC Comics, Harley Quinn, Catwoman, Young Justice, Infinite Frontier, Superman, and he is the current artist for Superman: Son of Kal-El. He lives in Costa Rica with his wife and two daughters.

Rich Woodall is the Co-Publisher of Black Caravan, a Scout Comics Imprint. He is also the creator or co-creator of The Electric Black, Gods of Brutality, Kyrra: Alien Jungle Girl, Johnny Raygun, Sgt.
