AfroComicCon Live in Person Film Festival Finalists Screening: Cosplay and The Movies!

Join AfroComicCon for an outdoor film screening featuring selections from Afro ComicCon’s Sci-fi, Horror, and Animation Film Festival! These are films created by black and POC filmmakers from all over the world. We’ll be showcasing winners and finalists from 2020’s Film festival in addition to the top finalist from this year’s festival. We’ll also be having a special screening of Pixar Animation Studios recent Spark Short, Twenty Something. An animated short film Written and Directed by black Storyboard Artists and Bay Area native Aphton Corbin.

In addition to supporting great films….COSPLAY IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED! That’s right, come dressed as your favorite character from the Comics, TV, and Film and enter for your chance to win BEST COSPLAY COSTUME.

It’s an evening you won’t want to miss out on and is sure to be filled with great films, food, drink, music, and of course great people!

This is a free event, however donations will be accepted and proceeds will help to support AfroComicCon, The Bay Area’s Premiere Black Comic Book and Sci-Fi Convention which will be held virtually on October 23rd and 24th this year.

COVID-19 Protocols

Temperature checks will be taken at the door and you’ll be required to complete a health declaration form prior entry. We ask that you wear a face-covering except when eating or drinking. All food and drink orders will be contactless so bring your phone so you can scan a QR code at one of the tables to order!

AfroComicCon is Collaborating with Moonshot Jr. to empower girls in STEAM

AfroComicCon and OTEC have announced a‌ ‌partnership‌ ‌with‌ ‌Moonshot‌ ‌Jr.‌  for a special program that trains ‌girls‌ ‌and‌ ‌young‌ ‌women‌ ‌of‌ ‌color‌ ‌who‌ are interested in ‌pursuing careers in ‌STEAM‌ ‌(‌Science,‌ ‌Technology,‌ ‌Engineering,‌ ‌Arts,‌ ‌Math‌)‌. ‌As‌ ‌well‌ ‌as‌ ‌entrepreneurship and‌ ‌innovation‌ ‌in‌ ‌Tech,‌ ‌such‌ ‌as‌ ‌Robotics,‌ ‌Artificial‌ ‌Intelligence,‌ ‌App‌ ‌Development,‌ ‌Game‌ ‌Development,‌ ‌and‌ ‌Creative‌ ‌Art‌ ‌fields.‌ ‌

‌The partnership will create an‌ ‌opportunity‌ ‌for‌ ‌6‌ ‌children‌ ‌between‌ ‌the‌ ‌ages‌ ‌of‌ ‌10‌ ‌-‌ ‌17‌ ‌to‌ have‌ ‌access‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ ‌Moonshot‌ ‌program‌ ‌for‌ ‌12‌ ‌months.‌ ‌They‌ ‌will‌ ‌have‌ ‌access‌ ‌to‌ ‌the‌ curriculum‌ ‌provided‌ ‌by‌ ‌Moonshot‌ ‌and‌ ‌accountability‌ ‌measures‌ ‌included‌ ‌with‌ AfroComicCon.‌ ‌At‌ ‌the‌ ‌end‌ ‌of‌ ‌their‌ ‌time‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌program,‌ ‌there‌ ‌will‌ ‌be‌ ‌a‌ ‌showcase‌ ‌and‌ presentation‌ ‌from‌ ‌each‌ ‌student‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌product‌ ‌they‌ ‌created.‌

Africa Represents at AfroComicCon

One of the benefits of going virtual this year is the fact that AfroComicCon has the ability to expand its reach and include artists from all over the world. Two companies they’re thrilled to feature at the event are Vortex247 and Kugali Media. 

Vortex247, based in Lagos, Nigeria has exploded on the indie comics scene with everything from indie comics to animation and will be joining the convention for The Spirit Universe Of African Comics panel, in which they will give insight into the growing comic scene in Africa and dive into the storytelling narratives in different regions from Africa’s best comic creators. The panel will feature award-winning creators Loyiso Mkize, Olivier Madiba, and Laurean Ntaate. The panel will be hosted by cosplayer extraordinaire Sheila Amolo. 

Kugali Media’s founders hail from all over the African continent and have backgrounds ranging from finance to game development to art and animation. However they have come together with a common goal, to use comic books, animation and AR (Augmented Reality), to bring African storytelling to the world. They regularly partner with creatives all over the world and they will be joining the convention for the panel Uniting Panafrican Voices to Tell Stories. Hosted by, Tolu Olowofoyeku and featuring creators Bill Masuku, Juni Ba, Joelle Mandengue, and Salim Busuru.

After months of planning it’s here!, AfroComicCon goes live tomorrow, October 24th! To see the full programming schedule go to afrocomicon.org And don’t forget to check out the Gaming Tournament on Melanin Gamer’s Twitch channel and vote in their first virtual Cosplay Contest.

Eisner-Award Winner Writer David F. Walker to Appear at AfroComicCon

AfroComicCon a last-minute addition! Award-winning writer David F. Walker will be joining the convention for AfroComicCon which kicks off tomorrow!

David is a comic book writer, prose author, filmmaker, journalist, and educator. His comic work includes Shaft (Dynamite Entertainment), Power Man and Iron Fist (Marvel Comics), Naomi (DC Comics), The Life Of Frederick Douglass (10 Speed Press/Random House), and the Eisner Award-winning Bitter Root (Image Comics). In 2015, he wrote the novel Shaft’s Revenge, the first new novel starring private detective John Shaft in nearly 40 years, and in 2021, 10 Speed Press/Random House will release his latest work, The Black Panther Party: A Graphic Novel History.

AfroComicCon is this Saturday, October 24. Due to COVID, the convention has gone virtual and it’s FREE for anyone to attend. The convention will take place over 12 hours and features an impressive lineup for a small convention.

Creating a Superhero Show

Members of his Marvel’s Luke Cage team are reuniting this weekend for a convention panel. Cheo Hodari Coker, Aida Croal, Akela Cooper, and Gregory Anderson will be on the panel “Creating a Superhero Show” at AfroComicCon.

A special panel with some of the creative team behind Luke Cage and how the success of the show set the precedent for other genre shows with predominantly Black storylines like Watchmen, Black Lightning, and even Lovecraft Country.

This year, it’s been tough for vendors who usually sell at cons. AfroComicCon is partnering with Auxxit for an AFCC Marketplace located within its shopping app. It’s up attendees to support the vendors as well. Do your part by downloading the Auxxit app BEFORE the convention on 10/24. (Don’t worry, it’s free to use!)

Auxxit makes it easy to shop online at virtual events. It also allows vendors to live chat with you about their product just like at an in-person convention. Plus, this is a great way to support vendors whose sales have been impacted by COVID.

Sign up for free today so that you can shop the marketplace and browse all of the great merchandise supplied by the vendors. More vendors will be added closer to the event date. In order to shop the day of the event, you will need to download the Auxxit app beforehand through your mobile app store.

Professional Wrestler turned Comedian and Actor Jay Washington Comes to AfroComicCon

AfroComicCon has announced comedian and actor, Jay Washington, will be among the Special Guests for the virtual convention!

A professional wrestler turned high energy stand-up comedian and actor. Jay’s quick wit and natural charm can’t help but to pull people into him. Jay has been heard on Sirius XM, seen on Collider Video, Netflix, Vh1, AFVtv, NBC on top of a variety of commercials, television shows and movies. Most notably in the Spike Lee Joint “Chi-Raq” alongside Wesley Snipes. He is the host of The Mad Titan Podcast and the co-host of the Blerds N The Hood show live on YouTube.
