No other pre-production stage of creating animation is lavished with as much time, care and expense as the storyboarding job. Often considered the best and most sought after job in the animation industry, storyboarding is the art of creating a blueprint for an entire animated film or episode.

Simply put, a storyboard is a very fancy and very long comic strip. But it’s much more complex than that. Storyboard artists can make or break an animated production. Besides drawing ability, the storyboard artist must have knowledge of acting, writing, and cinematic theory to convey to laypeople and experts alike how exciting and entertaining an animated production has the potential to be. It’s a hard job, being both highly technical and demandingly creative.

But it’s possibly the most fun you can have in the world of cartoons. Instructor STEPHEN DeSTEFANO-veteran storyboard artist-will show you how it’s done.

The class will acquaint the student with basic theories of, not one, but two different styles of storyboarding: The “Full Script” style (where a ‘board artist is supplied with a fully-fleshed out script, featuring action and all dialogue created by writers); and The “Outline” style (the “Wild West of storyboarding,”) where a ‘board artist is given several paragraphs of outlined story with minimal dialogue, requiring the artist to not only draw and devise action on the fly, but write final dialogue as well.  Students will have the option of ‘boarding a script or outline of their own creation if they prefer.

[While the class will focus on storyboarding for TV animation,  ‘boarding for other formats and venues will be touched upon, as well.]

The class format will consist of lectures and demonstrations by the instructors, as well as at-home and in-class assignments they will critique, including a final assignment which they will critique after the class via e-mail.

NOTES:

(1) Tools required for class. 2 pencils, an eraser, a sense of humor.
(2) Students will be supplied with an animation script to storyboard from; model sheets of characters, props and backgrounds to incorporate into their storyboards; and several sheets of thumbnail and storyboard templates.

STEPHEN DeSTEFANO began his cartooning career in 1985 drawing the fondly remembered ‘Mazing Man for DC Comics. In 1992, he began working in television animation, drawing backgrounds for Nickelodeon’s original Ren and Stimpy Show, eventually being promoted to storyboard artist. Studios and productions he has storyboarded for include Warner Bros (on Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond, and The Brave and the Bold); Universal Studios (on Earthworm Jim, Baby Huey, Beethoven, and >The Woody Woodpecker Show); and Cartoon Network on several productions, including his own animated pilot film, The Thundermans. Stephen has served as an art director for Katbot, a Disney Television production, and as storyboard and design supervisor on Adult Swim’s The Venture Brothers. (eventually being dubbed “the guru” by show creator Jackson Publick). He continues to work in animation, as well as comic books. His graphic novel, Lucky in Love (co-created with writer George Chieffet), was recently published by Fantagraphics Books.

(2) ADVANCED VISUAL STORYTELLING: EXPANDING YOUR COMICS VISION
Instructor: PETER KUPER
3 sessions: WEDNESDAYS June 8, 15, and 22
6:30-9:00 pm
$185 tuition / $165 for MoCCA members

>Join visionary comics artist PETER KUPER and explore the medium of sequential art and learn how to find outlets for publishing your own self-generated comics and illustration projects. There will be weekly assignments with in-class crit sessions along with visual presentations and demonstrations by the instructor that will expand your familiarity with the history and vast potential of sequential art. Students should have some experience creating comics and should bring one example of their comics work to the first class.[No art supplies will be necessary in class.]

PETER KUPER is the co-founder of World War 3 Illustrated and has remained on its editorial board for over 30 years. His illustrations and comics have appeared in Time, The New York Times and MAD, where he has written and illustrated SPY vs. SPY every month since 1997. He has produced over twenty books and graphic novels including The System, Sticks and Stones, Speechless and Stop Forgetting To Remember. Peter has also adapted Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and many of Franz Kafka’s works into comics. His adaptation of The Metamorphosis has been translated around the world and is in high school and college curriculums nation-wide. He won the 2010 Society of Illustrators gold medal for sequential art and appears in 2010’s Best American Comics anthology. Peter lived in Oaxaca, Mexico from 2006-2008 during a major teachers’ strike and his work about that time can be seen in his latest book, Diario de Oaxaca. TVAA Presents “Graphic Novels, Comics, Anime,& Toons: Art As Story”‏

Official Press Release

TEXAS VISUAL ARTS ASSOCIATION PRESENTS “GRAPHIC NOVELS, COMICS, ANIME & TOONS: ART AS STORY” EXHIBIT

DALLAS, TX – Beginning June 1 through June 30, 2011 the TVAA will exhibit a tribute to “Graphic Novels, Comics, Anime,& Toons: Art As Story” made up of art by amateurs as well as working professionals. Comics, once thought as fare for kids, have matured with the readers who bought and read them as children. Due to the maturity of the subject matter and technologies the medium has evolved to encompass subject matter and content as diverse and relevant as mediums like prose and film.

Now, movies, television, and animation has been so influenced that many of the properties in comics are considered as story lines attracting larger audiences. The old comic books have come into their own as an art form beyond the pop culture use by such artists as Roy Lichtenstein in the 60’s to the original artwork becoming highly collectible. This is a homage to those who’s interest as novices, fans, and professionals have continued to work in an area of art not looked at seriously among the population at large much less the art public.

A new graphic novel will be introduced titled “Echoes of the Lost Boys of Sudan” based on the true story of 4 boys who escaped the hardships and murders of their village to the United States.  Artwork from the story will be a part of the exhibit and some of the DFW creators of the series will be present at the exhibit’s reception on June 5 starting at 2:00 P.M.

Speaking at the reception will be Dallas filmmaker Todd Kent, whose documentary “Comic Book Literacy” showcases the utilization of the comic book medium to promote literacy and education.  The film will screen throughout the exhibit.  Local NJTL coach James Disco, co-creator of “Echoes of the Lost Boys of Sudan”,  will also be on hand to speak about the ground breaking graphic novel.   Additionally, Bert Cole, Director of the Dallas Tennis Association’s USTA NJTL will have the Closing Remarks on Echoes and the Community

Texas Visual Arts Association is made up of artists and patrons that has been around for approximately 100 years first as the Texas Fine Arts Association (TFAA) later changing in the 1986 to Texas Visual Arts Association (TVAA).

Eco Comics plants environmentally-friendly comic evolution with Graphicly

ECO COMICS TEAM UPS WITH GRAPHICLY

Eco Comics plants an environmentally-friendly comic book evolution

Publisher Mohawk Media has today announced that its Eco Comics range – paperless comic books and graphic novels designed with the specific purpose of having a minimal carbon footprint – is now available via digital comic book platform Graphicly, creating what it anticipates will be an evolutionary explosion for the comic book.

Graphicly will carry Eco Comics titles Heroic High, Supplanter, Pirate Queen, and more, via www.mohawkmedia.co.uk/ecocomics

Graphicly’s digital comic platform includes applications to allow the purchasing and reading of digital comic books for PC and Mac desktops, and mobile phone and tablet platforms on Android, iPhone and iPad.

Eco Comics titles are available worldwide to download or view online.

Editor Stuart Buckley says: “Paper production, even via sustainable forestry, can have a disastrous effect on the environment and wildlife. Combining Eco Comics’ outlook with the digital direction of the Graphicly platform is more than a turning point in comic books and graphic novels, it’s an evolutionary explosion.”

“As you flow through the story, the panels jump out. It takes comics to a whole new level. Readers get that extra satisfaction by realising that comics can be environmentally-friendly and, as a direct result, perhaps being even more enjoyable, interactive, and accessible.”

“Readers can also discuss and review each issue, resulting in Eco Comics not only being environmentally-friendly, but fan-friendly.”

“Mohawk Media and Eco Comics will continue to use the latest technologies to help minimise the impact of print comic production on the environment, while simultaneously striving to bring the highest quality entertainment to the reader.”

Eco Comics titles are available now on Graphicly, including a free preview comic. More titles are set to be announced.

THE TRANSFORMERS HALL OF FAME

Bay to attend ceremony at TRANSFORMERS “BOTCON” Fan Convention in Pasadena, California, on June 4

Pawtucket, R.I. (MAY 18, 2011) — Earlier today on its official TRANSFORMERS Facebook page, Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) announced the induction of film industry legends Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg—the director and executive producer of the blockbuster TRANSFORMERS film franchise—into its TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame. The second annual TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame ceremony, which celebrates more than 25 years of “MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE” action, will take place during the 2011 TRANSFORMERS “BOTCON” fan convention in Pasadena, California, and will feature TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON director Michael Bay in person to accept his honor and share some special surprises with the audience.

Founded in 2010 to honor those influential in creating and building the iconic TRANSFORMERS franchise, as well as actual “ROBOTS IN DISGUISE,” the 2011 TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame will induct the two legendary filmmakers who were instrumental in launching the live-action film franchise that brought the TRANSFORMERS brand to more fans than ever before. Bay and Spielberg will join previous honorees Bob Budiansky, Peter Cullen, Yoke Hideaki and Kojin Ohno in the TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame.

Michael Bay: For the last sixteen years, Michael Bay has been one of the world’s boldest filmmakers as both director and producer. His films have grossed over $4 billion worldwide. Since his 1995 breakout Bad Boys, Bay has directed a succession of international hits that have redefined the action genre, including The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys 2, The Island, and three Transformers films.  The third movie in the franchise, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, will hit theaters July 1; it is Bay’s first live-action film shot in 3D. A graduate of Wesleyan University and Art Center College of Design, Bay began his career as a distinguished commercial and music video director. He has won virtually every major award in the commercial industry, including Cannes’ Golden Lion, the Grand Prix Clio, and the Directors Guild of America’s Commercial Director of the Year award. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and four Indiana Jones films, including the most recent, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Among his myriad honors, he is a three-time Academy Award® winner, earning two Oscars® for Best Director and Best Picture for Schindler’s List, and a third Oscar® for Best Director for Saving Private Ryan. A principal partner of DreamWorks Studios, he is also the producer of Super 8, directed by J.J. Abrams, an executive producer on TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON, directed by Michael Bay and Cowboys & Aliens, directed by Jon Favreau, all of which will be released this summer.

Hasbro will also induct four more iconic robot characters into the TRANSFORMERS Hall of Fame. Heroic AUTOBOTS RATCHET and IRONHIDE, as well as evil DECEPTICON SOUNDWAVE will join 2010’s class of five robots, as chosen by Hasbro’s TRANSFORMERSHall of Fame internal panel of judges. In addition, TRANSFORMERS fans around the world voted on Transformers.com for a fourth robot to receive the 2011 “Fans’ Choice” honor. The winner, from among the nominees GRIMLOCK, SHOCKWAVE, ERECTOR, WASPINATOR and JAZZ, will be revealed for the first time at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony at “BOTCON” on June 4, 2011.

First introduced in 1984 by Hasbro and Takara as a toy line, the TRANSFORMERS brand

Since then, more than 7500 robots have been introduced in countless animated TV series, comic books and two live-action feature films. Comic Book Literacy Screens at Houston’s Comicpalooza Film Festival

Official Press Release

“COMIC BOOK LITERACY” MAKES ITS HOUSTON PREMIERE AT THE COMICPALOOZA FILM FESTIVAL
Houston pop culture convention provides an important forum for a film that addresses an unorthodox approach to literacy issues

HOUSTON, TX – The independent documentary film “Comic Book Literacy” will screen Saturday May 28th at 11:00 A.M. at the Comicpalooza Film Festival hosted by Splatterfest.  The film festival is a part of the three day Comicpalooza event, one of the biggest pop culture conventions in the southwest.

The film showcases the utilization of comic books to promote literacy and education and features writers, artist and historians who speak on behalf of the often misunderstood medium including artist Brian Denham (Iron Man, X-Files) and Houston’s own Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise), both of whom will be in attendance at the convention.

“It’s an honor to be included in such a large and diverse event,” said Todd Kent, the Dallas based director of the documentary, “I look forward to attending the screening and speaking with people about using comics for educational purposes.

The film won “Best Documentary” at the 2010 Phoenix Comicon and is currently touring the country, screening at various film festivals, comic book conventions and literacy events.  This film is not yet rated (70 minutes).  For more information about the film, upcoming screenings, and updates go to: www.ComicBookLiteracy.com
