The Super Mario Galaxy Movie delivers a Powered Up Opening

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

It should be a surprise that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was top of the weekend box office. The film delivered a massive $130.9 million domestically over the weekend for an initial week (it opened Wednesday) of around $190.1 million. Internationally, the movie grossed $182.4 million for a worldwide opening week of $372.5 million.

While impressive, it falls a little short of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie which debuted with $146.4 million domestically and went on to gross $574.9 million at the domestic box office and $1.361 billion worldwide.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might have issues matching the first film’s totals though. It has 41% critic rating by 89% from audiences according to RottenTomatoes. The first film had 59% and 95%. With audiences and critics slightly down on the sequel, I wouldn’t expect it to have similar legs but with limited competition for at least a month, the film might succeed due to that alone.

Project Hail Mary slipped to second place in its third week adding $30.7 million to its domestic total which is now $217.2 million. Over the week, it grossed $67.1 million internationally to bring that to $203.6 million. Worldwide, the film has grossed $420.8 million.

The Drama debuted in third place with $14.4 million domestically and $11.9 million internationally for $26.2 million worldwide.

Hoppers slipped to fourth place with $5.8 million to bring its domestic gross to $149.6 million. Over the week, it grossed $206.1 million internationally to bring that to $365.1 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $514.8 million.

Reminders of Him rounds out the top five with $2.2 million to lift its domestic gross to $45.4 million. Over the week, it grossed $5.3 million international which stands at $33.7 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $79.1 million.

In comic related movies…

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie – Infinity Castle remained at $136.9 million domestically. Internationally, the movie has grossed $601.2 million. Its worldwide gross is $738.1 million.

All You Need Is Kill remained at $695,290 domestically and internationally at $46,201 for a worldwide gross of $741,491.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution remained at $16.6 million domestically. Internationally, it also sits at $27.9 million for a worldwide gross of $44.5 million.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc remained at $43.4 million domestically. Internationally, the movie has grossed $119.5 million. Worldwide, the movie has grossed $162.9 million.

Numbers have 77 movies grossing $200,001,511 from 30,082 theaters for an average of $6,648.54 That is compared to last week’s 71 movies grossing $97,391,327 from 32,769 theaters for an average of $2,972.06.
