IDW Comics Now Available on Blackberry

Premier publisher at the forefront of digital distribution

First to offer major selection of comics

[IDW on BlackBerry]San Diego, CA (May 19, 2010) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce that its comics are now available on BlackBerry devices from Research In Motion (RIM). Starting this week, BlackBerry users can begin enjoying IDW’s huge comics catalog. IDW’s BlackBerry debut features the Star Trek: Countdown graphic novel. The company’s most popular titles then will continue to roll out on a weekly basis. TRANSFORMERS: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek: Movie Adaptation and G.I. JOE: The Rise of COBRA will be among the first to release over the next few weeks. Each is available as an individual application, with more titles added each week.

“We’re excited to bring our comics line up to BlackBerry users,” stated Jeff Webber, IDW’s Director of ePublishing. “Each BlackBerry app collects an entire series into an individual graphic novel, and people can sample part of the story before they decide to purchase. With BlackBerry, we’ve expanded the audience for our digital comics to include users of one of the largest mobile platforms in the world.”

Proud to be the first major publisher of comics available to BlackBerry users, IDW’s applications fully leverage the capabilities of BlackBerry devices to deliver the highest quality user experience. Each IDW comic features panel-by-panel viewing and scroll bar navigation, plus built-in news feeds that bring fans all the latest IDW news and updates.

For the BlackBerry comic applications, IDW partnered with Sweet Caesar, a premier BlackBerry developer. “We have work closely with IDW to bring the world of digital comics to the BlackBerry platform and to deliver the best possible user experience”, said Bogdan Chmielewski, Sweet Caesar’s Chief Technology Officer. “We are looking forward to working with IDW on upcoming titles and continuing to enhance the application based on consumer feedback.”

Since the BlackBerry App World is accessible from most BlackBerry phone, IDW’s comics catalog is now available to a huge new audience, and is no longer limited to certain carriers.

IDW comics are currently available through the BlackBerry App World.

Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis #1

Logan – Rwanda to the west.  Genocide, corruptions, journalists being disappeared.  Burundi to the southwest.  Civil war, child soldiers, one of the poorest countries on Earth.  Uganda to the north.  A million-and-a-half people are refugees in their own country, the army abducts little girls for “wives.”  Tanzania to the east.  Massive drugs gateway, one in ten people have HIV.

and

Logan – African heads o’ state are all the same.  Put ’em in power and they all go nuts.

Emma Frost – Nelson Mandela?

Logan – Lemme tell you something about Nelson Mandela.  He ran a guerilla war — which means he ran kill teams.  Civilians died.  What do they call that kind o’person in the United States, kid?

Hisako – … a terrorist?

Logan – Don’t sound so surprised.  I mean, give the man credit, he copped to it himself.  “I do not deny that I planned sabotage.  I planned it as a result of a calm and sober assessment of the political situation.”  Ain’t no saints in Africa, is all I’m saying.  Know how he got caught in the end?

Hisako – No, but you’re going to tell me…

Logan – The C.I.A. told the South African security forces where he was.

and

Ororo – Robert Mugabe.  “Let me be a Hitler tenfold,” he said, and then he actually grew himself a Hitler mustache.

New Mutants #13

Hank- And that’s the problem with faith… the stronger it gets the more people tend to die.

Siege #4

Steve Rogers – I want you people to promise me Osborn pays for his crimes.  In an American court.  He pays.  He goes to jail for this.

Where’s Kanye when you need him to interrupt a post?  Over at Bleeding Cool, Ryan Mullinex has put together a suspicious list of minority characters who’ve been bumped off by or replaced by Caucasian characters.

I’m not very verse in DC history and continuity, so can’t speak out on this, but it’s a very interesting list.  Is this suspicious?  Cherry picked?  Is it just story telling?  The folks at Comics Beat don’t seem to agree.  What say you?  Take the poll below.

Transformers and G. I. Joe Comics Come to the iPad

Official Press Release

IDW Publishing and Hasbro bring
TRANSFORMERS and G. I. JOE Comics
to the iPad™

“Storefront” applications debut as top downloads on iPad™

Free apps include three free comics each

[TRANSFORMERS Comics on the iPad]San Diego, CA (May 17, 2010) – IDW Publishing and Hasbro are proud to announce that TRANSFORMERS Comics and G.I. JOE Comics applications are available now on the Apple iPad. Taking full advantage of the iPad’s full-screen, full-color capabilities, the apps will offer the next level of reading experience to fans. The free IDW iPad storefront apps each include three free comics with the initial download, and offer more comics as in-app purchases. Fans can browse nearly 200 comics for their favorite story lines, such as movie tie-ins, ongoing series or even classics from the 80s.

“The iPad is a wonderful format for comics, as the screen size is close enough to the print size that readers can view the full page. OPTIMUS PRIME and the BARONESS look amazing in this format!” said IDW Director of ePublishing, Jeff Webber. “Our iPad apps are also compatible with our iPhone® and iPod touch® apps. So you can purchase TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE on one device, and read it on another. The apps will automatically identify which one you are using, and adjust to offer the best reading experience.”

Each storefront app offers readers the highest quality viewing experience, with a full-page display that showcases the eye-catching art and vivid stories. IDW has developed several new features to enhance the comics and take full advantage of the iPad’s capabilities, including pinch-zoom abilities and single- or two-page viewing options.

“Both G.I. JOE and TRANSFORMERS stories have such a broad appeal and have been gaining steam with the core readership, that pushing them to the front of the iPad store just made sense,” says Andy Schmidt, IDW Senior Editor on both franchises. “These are not just great apps and a great reading experience, these are great stories with beautiful artwork.”

[GI JOE comics on the iPad]“The great comic book legacy of TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE continues in a new and exciting way with these new cutting edge applications for the iPad and other digital platforms,” said Bryony Bouyer, Senior Vice President of Entertainment and Licensing at Hasbro.  “We’re thrilled to be able to deliver classic characters such as OPTIMUS PRIME and SNAKE EYES to comic fans around the world via IDW in a variety of formats.”

IDW was the first comics publisher to launch its own “in app purchase” storefronts for the iPhone and iPod touch with a variety of applications. The company also offers the IDW Comics app, which collects the entire IDW digital catalog, including TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE and many other titles. All IDW comic shop apps are powered by iVerse (http://www.iversecomics.com/).

TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE comics are currently available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch through the App StoreSM.
