Review: Discombobulated: 2020 and the ‘Rona and more!
The past few years have been a test for most of us. These years have revealed more about ourselves than most of us would like to admit. Our flaws have only become emboldened. While our strengths seems to have become diminished.
Many of us would often question our actions before COVID and now it seems we tend to question them even more. We usually ponder over our actions to the point of regret. This, of course, is just a microcosm of what many of us have felt. In the latest story arc of the relevant Discombobulated, David F. Walker gives the reader his take on some of these issues.
In “Linguistics”, David elegantly dissects language in the difference between intonation and punctuation. ”Death Wishe(s)”, has Walker asking his subconscious whether it sinful to wish for someone to die, which he makes peace with. In “Heavy Mentals”, the stigma around mental health and how it affects Black men in particular is examined and discussed. “The Language of Friendship” examines how certain people connect and how often it becomes a hidden language between the two. In “A Special Message from Rona”, Walker tells just how the inaction of the previous Presidential administration only increased the death toll. In “2020 and the Rona” Walker takes apart the ridiculous arguments of COVID deniers and the Stop The Steal idiots. This latest collection of strips wraps up with “The Grieving Process” in which David mourns the loss of a casual romantic acquaintance. It’s something that affects him more than he ever realized.
Overall, Discombobulated continues a webcomic collection that is more than relevant. The story by Walker is genuine. The art by DJ Powell and Quinn McGowan is astonishing. Altogether, it’s a series of webcomics which is utterly prescient. Hopefully we get more and Walker continues his observations.
