Review: Valiant High #4

The comiXology Originals series Valiant High wraps up with a fun battle that keeps the lighthearted nature of the series and leaves me not just wanting more but wanting an entire series based on this version of the Valiant universe.

Homecoming! HoCo! The most important day of the year. The students of Valiant High are in their very best and are eager to see the Valiant High Man o’ Wars take on their rivals, the Vine! But, while everyone looks forward to the dance, the Immortal Enemy awaits a perfect time to appear. Will the students of Valiant High be able to stop him – and will Pete Stanchek ever get a date?

Written by Daniel Kibblesmith, Valiant High has twisted the Valiant world we knew mixing in a bit of John Hughes’ classics and classic archetypes for a fun take on it all. There’s some predictability to it, but Kibblesmith actually does a fantastic job of keeping us readers on our toes about how he’ll translate each character into this world.

This issue takes place during Homecoming and we see some jokes and moments around the trouble of asking someone to the dance and more interestingly gender roles in general. There’s a lot that surprised me as a reader as far as what’s touched upon and I really want to see Kibblesmith and artist Derek Charm spin this out to an ongoing series where they have more room to play with.

Charm’s art is, well, charming. I’ve loved each issue in not just how the characters are depicted, which has a fun cartoon quality about it all, but the world that’s presented. There’s so much to soak in with each page and it all feels like a bright fun world where ominous things can happen. It’s a solid combo of art and story, like there’s some unity.

Four issues and it’s a wrap and I’m left wanting more, that’s a good thing right? Please comiXology, Valiant, deliver more of this quirky and fun series that surely can be used to present these characters in a way the ongoing comics can’t. Seriously, this can be the DC Super Hero Girls of the Valiant universe it has so much potential. In simpler words, if you haven’t read this series, do yourself a favor and buy it now.
