In this episode of Comic Book Men, Kevin meets with the original captain of Starfleet, William Shatner, to talk comics. Walt drools over a Mego doll with unique packaging.

I knocked the show last week for being a bit formulaic and sticking to a knock-off of Pawn Stars, but with less history and flatter jokes. This episode breaks the mold instead throwing in a segment of Kevin Smith interviewing William Shatner about his latest comic venture, and then a couple of segments over items.

Lets start with the items, both are rare and ones I’ve never seen or knew about. They give a lot of history about the items, and talk about why they’re important and why they matter to everyone. It’s a lot more information than some of the previous episodes have given about items being bought and sold. They’re solid segments.

What’s news is Kevin Smith interviewing Shatner which comes off as very staged, but also Smith is clearly a fan and excited about the interview. There’s not a lot of ground being broken, but it’s an interesting change and a segment I actually hope we see more of.

The episode is the best of this year and one of the best in a long time. Instead of silly segments where the guys have an experience no one has ever gotten a chance to do, instead we get a cool interview instead. A nice change of pace and entertaining episode.
