Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!
Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in! Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out and think about picking up.
Pick of the Week: George Perez’s Sirens #1 (BOOM! Studios) – The name George Pérez should say it all, but one of comics’ living masters is back with his own original title courtesy of BOOM! As an intergalactic force enslaves planets across the galaxy, the legendary team known only as the Sirens must reunite to save the galaxy—but is that even possible when the Sirens themselves don’t even remember who they are?
The Delinquents #2 (Valiant) – The first issue had me laughing the whole time. Just an amazing limited series that brings together Valiant’s Archer & Armstrong and Quantum & Woody.
Elric Vol. 1: The Ruby Throne (Titan Comics) – A stunning new comic adaptation of the classic Elric of Melniboné novels by Michael Moorcock! The ancient island of Melniboné has been ruled by Elric, the albino emperor, for millennia. Reliant on magic and herbs for his strength and prolonged life, Elric’s grip on Melniboné is crumbling, as his people slide into decadence. Now his envious cousin Yyrkoon, Prince of Melniboné, plots to overthrow him and claim the Ruby Throne for himself!
Meka (Magnetic Press) – The sci-fi action novel tells the story of two soldiers who pilot giant humanoid war vehicles called “meka” in an interstellar war. When their vehicle is disabled in the opening sequence, they must rely on their wits and each other to survive in the ruined warzone they inadvertently created.
Oddly Normal #1 (Image Comics) – It looks like a new all-ages comic from Image (though could be wrong on the all-ages part). Meet Oddly Normal, a ten-year-old girl with pointed ears and green hair–a half-witch who will be the first to tell you that having a mother from a magical land called Fignation and a father from Earth doesn’t make it easy to make friends at school!
Stray Bullets: The Killers #7 (Image Comics) – Each issue is fantastic. What happens when when you find out you’ve been living in a prison your whole life and had no idea?
Thor: God of Thunder #25 (Marvel) – It’s an over-sized final issue before the brand new series featuring the brand new female Thor! One chapter in the God of Thunder’s life reaches its end…and another begins.
Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye #33 (IDW Publishing) – IDW has been knocking it out of the park with their Transformers universe that moves the story along, but at the same time feels familiar for long time fans. What’s scarier than Megatron? Try a Megatron that’s a religious fanatic trying to do good.
Trees #5 (Image Comics) – Luca has a plan for Eligia. It is not the plan she thinks it is. She is his knife now. Warren Ellis’ series has been weird and fascinating with each issue.
The Wicked + The Divine #4 (Image Comics) -Kieron Gillen and Jamie Mckelvie’s fantastic series continues. The mystery is solved. But does pop-god Lucifer like the answer? The answer is a word that rhymes with “Go”, “Blow” and “Pro.”

The Delinquents #1 (Valiant) – Take two of Valiant’s most entertaining teams and have them get together for a story about hobos and a map on an ass. The first issue is fantastic, especially for fans of Archer & Armstrong and Quantum & Woody.
Genius #3 (Top Cow Productions) – The series is four years in the making, and it seems like there couldn’t be a better time for its release. The story focuses on a brilliant mind who uses her tactical brilliance to unite the gangs of LA.
Hip Hop Family Tree Vol. 2 (Fantagraphics) – The second volume of the praised series. The first volume sees a new printing released this week as well!
Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #1 (DC Comics) – Diana Prince: Amazon warrior, ambassador to Man’s world, or champion of women in need? All of the above! This digital-first anthology series will bring some of comics’ greatest talents to Themyscira, and give them leave to explore Diana, her world – and ours!
Storm #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was amazing. In just one issue writer Greg Pak defined, added depth, and re-introduced us to the iconic character.
The Strain: Night Eternal #1 (Dark Horse) – The third, and final, volume in the book turned comic turned television series. The television series has been picked up for a second season, so get ahead of the story!
Trees #4 (Image Comics) – Warren Ellis’ brilliant sci-fi series…. I’m still trying to figure it all out.
Zaya (Magnetic Press) – A secret agent in the distant future leaves her post to seek a normal life as an artist and mother. When a biomechanical threat starts attacking agents across the galaxy, she is called back into the field to find and stop the killer. The mission opens many questions about her own past, present, and future within not only the organization, but within the universe as she knows it. The graphic novel is stunning to look at and an awesome read.

Sarah is an Assistant Professor of Language and Literature at St. Augustine College in Chicago. As co-host Elana puts it, a Doctor of Shakespearology. She’s currently working on a book about adaptations of Shakespeare in television, comic books, and video games. Her Twitter is @pas_dechat, although she mostly uses it to talk about sports.

- San Diego Comic-Con has come to a close. We talk about the various announcements (or lack thereof) and what stood out amongst the bunch.

Top Pick: Storm #1 (Marvel) – Thief. Goddess. Headmistress. Queen. The X-Man called Storm has always defied a single title. And her desire to better the world has never been limited to only her own kind. On a mission to foster goodwill and safeguard the mutant race’s continued existence in her own way, Storm will travel the globe, confronting man and mutant, god and monster and everything in-between. She will overthrow tyrants, quell tsunamis and strive to see her dream for the world realized. She is Storm, a hero like no other….and the skies will tremble at the sight of their namesake.
The character has never had an ongoing series, it’s about time! Marvel continues to expand the diversity of the characters fronting their comics, and with this, there’s not a better choice of a character to do it with.
Afterlife With Archie #6 (Archie Comics) – Archie’s horror series picks up after a little bit of a break. One of the best surprises of the year!
Letter 44 #8 (Oni Press) – Six months into the presidency, President Blades has deployed sci-fi superweapons to end wars in the Middle East, opening him to attacks from all sides, including a Congressman once romantically linked with the First Lady. Meanwhile, in space, as construction on the alien Chandelier is finally completed, the crew of the Clarke will truly understand what they’re facing.
Ragnarok #1 (IDW Publishing) – Walter Simonson is known for his fantasy, especially his work on Thor. Some think it was a definitive take on the character. He returns to that genre with a new series from IDW.
The Shadow Hero (First Second) – In the comics boom of the 1940s, a legend was born: the Green Turtle. He solved crimes and fought injustice just like the other comics characters. But this mysterious masked crusader was hiding something more than your run-of-the-mill secret identity… The Green Turtle was the first Asian American super hero.
The comic had a short run before lapsing into obscurity, but the acclaimed author of American Born Chinese, Gene Luen Yang, has finally revived this character in Shadow Hero, a new graphic novel that creates an origin story for the Green Turtle.
Skullkickers #29 (Image Comics) – Consistently one of the most entertaining comics on the market from the uber-talented Jim Zub.
Supreme: Blue Rose #1 (Image Comics) -Warren Ellis reintroduces the central image comics character. Should be interesting.
Transformers Vs. G.I. Joe #1 (IDW Publishing) – The two properties collide harking back to the classic 80s comics.
Trees #3 (Image Comics) – Another series from Warren Ellis explores mysterious pillars that have cropped up around the world. What do these alien artifacts mean or want?
Winterworld #2 (IDW Publishing) – Chuck Dixon’s cool comic that looks at survival in a bleak winter world. Think Snowpiercer, but outside the train.

Pick of the Week: Outcast #1 (Skybound/Image Comics) – Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it. A double sized first issue from Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta.
All-New Ultimates #4 (Marvel) – Contributor Andrew has been going back and forth on whether to jump into this ensemble cast of first and second string heroes and he just so happens to pick the swimsuit special…
Conan The Avenger #3 (Dark Horse) – Fred Van Lente and Brian Ching have yet to let up on their Avenger series. They’ve taken a slightly smaller, but no less barbaric, Conan and effortlessly shown his transition from drunkard to witch hunter to mercenary.
King Conan The Conqueror #5 (Dark Horse) – For our second Conan pick of the week, it has to be Tim Truman’s nearly-finished, exceptional Conqueror adaptation. In a classic Conan piece, he shows an aged King of Aquilonia tell the story of his rise to the throne to an incredulous scribe.
Letter 44 #7 (Oni Press) – Charles Soule’s masterful mix of politics and science fiction has been a hell of a ride so far, and few writers are able to pack in so much in every single issue.
The Midas Flesh #7 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – The fantastic series has hit it out of the park with each and every issue. Though it might have a cartoonish look, the subject is pretty heavy. Such a fantastic series and amazing start for BOOM! Box.
Ms. Marvel #5 (Marvel) – Easily one of the best debuts of the year and absolutely one of the best new characters to debut in some time. Hopefully the new Ms. Marvel has a hell of a shelf-life.
Saga #20 (Image Comics) – Did you read the last issue!? That last page alone makes this a buy.
Savage Hulk #1 (Marvel) – We’re suckers for first issues, and this looks like a fun read. Writer/artist Alan Davis is a one-man-band on this series…definitely worth a look.
Trees #2 (Image Comics) – Warren Ellis is hit and miss, and this series is an absolute hit. The first issue was a fantastic debut, and we expect no less from the second.
