Pick(s) of the Week: Manifest Destiny #1 and many more

manifestdest01_coverImage Comics has been on a roll with solid debut series and this week is no exception with two different releases from the publisher. Out of the two though, it’s Manifest Destiny that sticks out with it’s weird history take on the explorers Lewis and Clark.

In 1804, Captain Meriwether Lewis and Second Lieutenant William Clark set out on an expedition to explore the uncharted American frontier. This is the story of what they discovered lurking in the wilds…

Skybound’s newest original series unveils the monsters of the western frontier in the adventure of a lifetime by writer Chris Dingess and up-and-coming artist Matthew Roberts.

Having read the first issue, it’s worth checking out.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

Andrew:

Top Pick: Manifest Destiny #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – I’ve been awaiting this twisted Lewis and Clark series for awhile now. In a retelling of the familiar American frontier story, our adventurous heroes face more than just poison ivy and brown bears…

Afterlife with Archie #2 (Archie Comics) – I’ve never been a fan of Archie Comics…but this series is phenomenal. Archie finally treats adult readers like adults and delivers a quality horror series. If you won’t take my word for it, check out Brett’s review of the first issue.

Batman #25 (DC) – After donning the cape and cowl, Bruce Wayne is learning what he must become to protect Gotham as the Zero Year arc continues. This new take on Batman’s origin story (and of his enemies) is a great read.

The Other Dead #3 (IDW Publishing) – I know I’ve been out of the loop lately, but how am I just hearing about this? Mankind versus a global zombie animal infection? Yes please.

Umbral #1 (Image Comics) – The first issue of another one of Image Comics’ new fall series looks like an interesting fantasy-esque read. Having just read and reviewed Criminal Macabre, I’m digging Christopher Mitten’s illustrations.

Brett:

Top Pick: Afterlife With Archie #2 ( Archie Comics) – The first issue blew me away and out of everything coming out this week, where Archie comics allows this series to go is the most interesting thing to me. The first issue just met every expectation I had and I expect no less from the second.

Garth Ennis’ Red Team #6 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I love a good crooked cop story and this is it. Just a great comic that I’d love to see on the small screen. The descent of this cop squad into crime and questionable activities has been gripping so far.

Manifest Destiny #1 (Image Comics) – You can read above as to why this makes the list.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #5 ( Marvel Comics) – Writer Nick Spencer has taken this group of C-list villains and made them interesting and sympathetic. I want more of this!

Unity #1 (Valiant Entertainment) – Valiant continues to connect the dots of their various series and a lot of that is happening here. The first issue kicks in the doors with an action filled debut.

Top TPB/Graphic Novel: Bandette HC Vol. 1 (Monkeybrain/Dark Horse) – The digital series gets collected and printed courtesy of Dark Horse and you now have no excuse to not read this fantastic digital first comic.

Scott:

Top Pick: Batman #25 (DC) – The last issue was over sized, gorgeous (particularly the coloring), and totally changed the status quo in Gotham City. So far I’m loving how expansive Zero Year is, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Rocket Girl #2 (Image Comics) – The debut was a little inconsistent, but the premise has promise (see what I did there?), and I love Amy Reeder’s art. I’m willing to give this series some time to find its feet.

Savage Wolverine #11 (Marvel Comics) – This one’s a bit of a wild card. I’ve heard that Jock’s story line has been a little meandering, but I adore his art and on this book its been expansive and appropriately otherworldly (as it’s a Wolverine story set on another planet). And those covers, man . . . Wow.

Umbral #1 (Image Comics) – This series comes from Antony Johnston and Christopher Mitten, and while I’ve never read any of Wasteland I hear its excellent, so I’m looking forward to their new project. Plus, it’s horror, which is one of my favorite comic genres.

Pick(s) of the Week: Trillium #3 and Many More

TRILL_Cv3_5r93f8kfby_This week, comic book fans are overwhelmed with numerous excellent choices to pick up at their local comic book shops this Wednesday. It wasn’t just difficult for myself and the team to narrow down the long list of releases to five choices a piece, but also choose the top comic of the bunch. After long deliberation, I went with Trillium #3, the newish Vertigo series from the brilliant mind of Jeff Lemire.

After her mind-altering encounter with William, the wounded soldier from 1921, Nika is flung back to the far future, where she must face the repercussions of her actions. But will she be able to make sense of what’s happening to her in time to stop Earthlab’s genocide of the indigenous alien tribe? And can she find her way back to William?

The first two issues knocked it out of the park with amazing writing and visuals, showing off why Lemire is considered one of the best creators out there right now. The love story across the ages is beautiful in so many ways, it’ll keep you lingering slowly on each page. There’s a good chance you’ll see this series on numerous “best of” lists when the year wraps up.

Find out other choices from the team below:

Brett:

Top Pick: Trillium #3 (Vertigo) – See above as to why I think this is a top pick this week and a top series this year. Each issue so far has nailed it and exceeded already high expectations.

All New X-Men #17 (Marvel) – The last issue of the Battle of the Atom event was a bit of a shocker casting into doubt everything we’ve been told. The second half of this event should be one hell of a ride.

God is Dead #2 (Avatar Press) – The gods have returned and decided to carve up the world. Jonathan Hickman’s new series from Avatar blew me away with its first issue.

Mighty Avengers #2 (Marvel) – I thought it’d be gimmicky, but the first issue of this new series was a solid read. I wish it wasn’t part of an event, but this new Avengers team is a welcomed addition so far.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #4 (Marvel) – Talk about a series that caught me off guard. The “Superior” line has been solid and along with the main Spider-Man title this is at the top of the group. Each issue has gotten me to laugh, a lot, and appreciate the villains of the Marvel U a bit more.

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Thrud the Barbarian HC (Titan Books) – The classic comics are reprinted in this fantastic collection.

Scott:

Top Pick: Lazarus #4 (Image Comics) – Issue #3 left us with a huge cliffhanger, and while I have no doubt that Forever has the wherewithal to survive, I’m really looking forward to seeing how she does it. Plus, its the conclusion of the first arc, so you just know some crazy stuff is going to go down.

Batman: Black and White #2 (DC Comics) – One of the best anthologies is back for #2, and I’m so excited. The short story is such a difficult format, but with such an impressive list of contributors, I’m sure this issue will be amazing.

Bushido #1 (Image Comics) – Feudal Japan, samurai, vampires. Even if it turns out to be a terrible book, the setting is just too much fun to pass up.

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Batman: Odyssey (DC Comics) – So I’ve never read this story, but I’ve heard that it’s just absolutely ridiculous. Batman rides dinosaurs and kidnaps guys and monologues while shirtless. I think I’m going to have to pick this up just to enjoy the sheer insanity. You should too!

Pick(s) of the Week: The Star Wars #1

the star wars #1 coverThis week is packed with awesome releases making this choice a very difficult one. For years now, there has existed an elusive script written by George Lucas, The Star Wars. This early draft of the classic film we know today is filled with familiar characters, worlds and concepts, but all twisted just a little into a new adventure.

Annikin Starkiller is the hero . . . Luke Skywalker is a wizened Jedi general . . . Han Solo is a big green alien . . . and the Sith . . . Well, the Sith are still the bad guys. High adventure and derring-do from longer ago, in a galaxy even further away!

This is the official adaptation of the screenplay we’ve only heard about and having read it, we’re getting one hell of an adventure.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

Brett:

Top Pick: The Star Wars #1 (Dark Horse) -See above as to why I’m going with this one. I read the first issue and it’s awesome.

Forever Evil #1 (DC Comics) – Out of the Trinity War comes this first company wide event. Trinity War was pretty solid, but this one sounds like it’s going to get people talking with some shocking moments.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #3 (Marvel) – While I love Dan Slott’s Spider-Man comic, this one looks at the villains he faces in an awesome comic that’s part comedy as well as adventure. The writing and dialogue is fantastic.

Trillium #2 (Vertigo) – The first issue absolutely blew me away in one of the best debuts of the year. Here’s hoping the second issue holds up and is just as solid.

X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1 (Marvel) – The other big event kicking off this week. Marvel has been stumbling a bit with their events lately and here’s crossing my fingers this one breaks the downward spiral.

Sean:

Top Pick: The Star Wars #1 (Dark Horse) – You’ll see my review out tomorrow, and hopefully you’ll pick this up tomorrow, because in my opinion it’s one of the best series debuts this year!

Forever Evil #1 (DC Comics) – I’m plainly just looking forward to seeing what DC does with this.

Infinity #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was pretty fantastic, and I’m not even a huge Marvel fan, so how could this be a let down?

Superior Spider-Man #17 (Marvel) – The return of Spider-Man 2099, and, well, this makes the list because it’s Superior Spider-Man and Dan Slott hasn’t disappointed. Oh, and I think Harry’s back?

X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1 (Marvel) – What, another major event? This is madness! X-Madness!

Pick(s) of the Week: Trillium #1 and a Whole Bunch More

trillium 1 coverIt’s the year 3797, and botanist Nika Temsmith is researching a strange species on a remote science station near the outermost rim of colonized space. It’s the year 1921, and renowned English explorer William Pike leads an expedition into the dense jungles of Peru in search of the fabled “Lost Temple of the Incas,” an elusive sanctuary said to have strange healing properties. Two disparate souls separated by thousands of years and hundreds of millions of miles. Yet they will fall in love and, as a result, bring about the end of the universe. Even though reality is unraveling all around them, nothing can pull them apart. This isn’t just a love story; It’s the LAST love story ever told.

Vertigo has been kicking ass with their recent releases, and I expect this to do no less. The description above of the comic just makes me drool. Add in the fact it’s Jeff Lemire on writing and art duties and you have a top pick and possibly one of the best comics of the year.

Check out below for the rest of the picks from some of the Graphic Policy team!

Andrew:

Top Pick: The Black Bat #4 (Dynamite) – This is seriously one of the best pulps on the market. If you think you won’t root for a former mob attorney turned vigilante, you’re wrong.

Helheim #6 (Oni Press) – I am still in denial that this is the last issue. Viking bloodshed at its finest.

Quantum and Woody #2 (Valiant) – This brotherly duo hero comedy is a great read. It has witty banter and a fun premise.

Satellite Sam #2 (Image) – Truth be told, I haven’t read the first issue…but with all of the buzz around it, I’m getting both of them.

Sheltered #2 (Image) – Lord of the Flies meets Doomsday Preppers. Yes please.

Brett:

Top Pick: Trillium #1 (Vertigo) – see above

Burn the Orphanage: Born to Lose #1 (Image) – A young orphan named Rock was left for dead, now he’s out for revenge! With partners Lex and Bear by his side, our hero will find out who burned his home and family to the ground. If that means taking on every goon, punk, and topless stripper ninja in the city… then so be it. Really, I need to give more of a reason?

The Final Plague #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The first issue freaked me out. Rats, rats and rats. I hate rats and this comic is full of them. Not for the squeamish.

Princeless: Tales of Girls Who Rock (Action Lab) – I’ve loved every release for this series so far. There’s so much awesome in this series, the fact that part of it is it turns common tropes on their head is just one example. Perfect for kids and adults the like.

Sidekick #1 (Image) – The Cowl and Flyboy: renowned superhero and sidekick despite dopey names. They were famous, popular, and happy until the Cowl’s assassination. Now, no one takes Flyboy seriously. Follow his trajectory from barely tolerated hero to figure of ridicule, and witness his slow descent into madness, darkness and crime. Done numerous times it’s kind of hard not to be intrigued by J. Michael Straczynski’s take.

Superior Foes of Spider-Man #2 (Marvel) – The first issue blew me away. The pacing. The dialogue. It all was amazing. The team of Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber knocked it out of the park and could have one of the best debuts this year!

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Rubicon (Archaia) – The story is straightforward and not all that complicated. The characters are cookie cutter and what I’d expect from this type of tale. What really drew me in was the interaction between all of those characters. It gives a bit of an insight into the mindset of them all and a glimpse of what mentally goes into being a Navy SEAL. That is cool and worth the read. You can read my full review.

Scott:

Top Pick: Trillium #1 (Vertigo) – It’s been a while since Sweet Tooth and The Underwater Welder, and I’m so pleased to see Lemire doing creator owned work again. Everything I’ve read about this series leads me to believe it’ll be so much fun, and emotionally resonant to boot.

Fatale #16 (Image) – I’m a sucker for the hardboiled, and in my eyes Brubaker/Phillips team can do no wrong. Now that the current arc is getting closer to modern times, I’m interested to see what’s in store for Josephine.

Satellite Sam #2 (Image) – As an avid lover of television, Matt Fraction’s story really speaks to me, and Chaykin’s art brings 1950s New York to life.

Sheltered #2 (Image) – The debut issue of this series saw expansive world building, and then immediately upended the status quo. I’m so excited to see what happens next.

Ten Grand #4 (Image) – Ben Templesmith drawing an otherworldly, foul mouthed PI. I just can’t get enough of that art.

Sean:

Top pick: Daredevil: Dark Knights #3 (Marvel) – Lee Weeks’ past two issues have been absolutely incredible, but it comes to a crashing end in this finale. Weeks is no Waid and Samnee, but he’s a close second.

Swamp Thing #23 (DC) – because it’s Swamp Thing and he’s going to beat up that punk John Constantine.

Superior Spider-Man #15 (Marvel) – two other ‘superior’ titles out this week, but Superior Spidey takes the cake, as issue 15 starts to close a Hobgoblin plot that’s been long in the making.

Abe Sapien: Dark and Terrible #5 (Dark Horse)Abe is kicking ass in his own on-going series, despite everything going to hell in the B.P.R.D. world, literally. And just when things couldn’t get worse for the identity-torn Abe, they do.

Detective Comics #23 (DC)so you know that whole Wrath guy who’s been killing cops? Well, maybe you don’t, since there’s a kajillion Batman comics to follow, but check out Detective Comics just this week and you won’t be disappointed.

TPB of the Week: Daredevil by Mark Waid, Volume 5 (Marvel)this collects the current Daredevil run by Waid and Samnee, issues 22-27, which include among other things the first appearance of Superior Spider-Man, and is just fantastic because it’s Waid and Samnee’s award-winning, humanistic and emotionally captivating Daredevil!

Review: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1 and Avengers A.I. #1

The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #1

superior foe of spider-man #1 CoverBoomerang and some of Spidey’s deadliest baddies prove that with terrible powers come terrible responsibilities! Rising star, writer Nick Spencer teams with Eisner Award winning artist Steve Lieber for a walk on the Spider-Verse’s evil side!

Some of the “B” team including Boomerang, Shocker, the Beetle, Speed Demon and Overdrive are the new Sinister Six, except they’re no where near as good… or sinister. Told from Boomerang’s perspective the first issue goes over the helpless team and gives us an insight into their lives.

I expected some sort of action comic, though what exactly, I wasn’t sure. Instead I got one of the freshest comics and best debuts of the year. The comic is more of a noir/crime comic filled with humor from a perspective we often don’t see, the villains. The comic reminds me a lot of the recent Heroes for Hire and Villains for Hire, both great comics that were cancelled too soon.

The writing in this comic nails it with a great voice, tone and pacing and gives us sympathetic and entertaining characters, showing there’s more to them than being beaten up by Spider-Man.

The art by Lieber is solid, fitting the tone perfectly for the story Spencer has set up.

The first issue blew me away and is a contender for best new series of 2013. I have no idea where the series will go from here, but this is a comic I want and want more of.

Avengers A.I. #1

avengers ai #1 coverHARDER. BETTER. FASTER. STRANGER. The triumph of Hank Pym turns to tragedy for the human race?an unfathomable Pandora’s Box of destruction! When a brave new villain is unleashed, only one team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can save us from the future ! Avengers A.I.!

Spinning out of Age of Ultron, Hank Pym has assembled a team to handle a new threat, actually another threat he created. In dealing with Ultron, Pym has possibly unleashed something worse. You see, after all he learned from the timeline shattering Age of Ultron… he really didn’t learn. There were no lessons, only more shit caused by Pym’s tinkering.

The first issue is an pseudo explanation of the threat and then Pym’s gathering of his new team made up of the Vision, Victor Mancha, Doombot and Monica Chang. We’re also introduced to the mysterious Alexis at the end.

There’s some great stuff here. I really liked Doombot and his personality. That should bring some great comedic relief and interaction throughout the series. The story though was only so-so. There’s nothing bad with it, there’s just nothing that got me really excited. The fact that Pym hasn’t learned from his mistakes only makes the first issue a bit more frustrating to me and Pym a less likeable character.

I’m going to give this new series a chance and read the first arc, but so far, it’s just ok.
