Dark Circle Comics unveils new details on upcoming series: Shield artist, Fox colorist

dark circle comicsOne of the things in 2015 we’re looking forward to is Dark Circle Comics the darker take on the classic Red Circle characters. Slated to launch early next year, the publishing line will include The Black Hood, The Shield, and The Fox as ongoing series.

Today they revealed promotional artwork (left) by Francesco Francavilla and announced rising-star David Williams as the regular series artist on The Shield and Harvey Award winning artist Jose Villarrubia will be joining the team of Dean Haspiel and Mark Waid on The Fox.

The Black Hood is a gritty, noir crime thriller written by Duane Swierczynski with artwork by Michael Gaydos presenting the Black Hood as an urban vigilante.

The Shield features a new and different incarnation of the classic character in a superhero action-adventure story by Adam Christopher, Chuck Wendig, and David Williams.

The Fox by Dean Haspiel, Mark Waid, and Jose Villarrubia, will follow the crazy and entertaining adventures of Paul Patton Jr in his attempts to fight crime in Impact City.

Dark Circle Comics Unveils First Wave of Superhero Titles

the shieldToday, Dark Circle Comics – the superhero imprint of Archie Comics – revealed that the label’s first wave of titles will include The Black Hood from writer Duane Swierczynski and artist Michael Gaydos, The Shield from writers Adam Christopher and Chuck Wendig and artist Wilfredo Torres, and The Fox from writer/artist Dean Haspiel and scripter Mark Waid. All three series will be ongoing and launch early next year.

The new titles – overseen by Dark Circle Editor Alex Segura – will serve as ideal jumping on points for new readers – providing unique, literary and cinematic takes on the classic properties in the Dark Circle Comics library that can appeal to new and long-time fans of the characters.

A dark crime saga in the vein of Boardwalk Empire and True Detective. A stunning and revisionist new take on the first patriotic hero. An off-the-wall adventure that meshes a DIY indie comix aesthetic with the best of superhero craftsmanship. Dark Circle Comics will present fans with a novelistic and thoughtful approach to superhero comics more akin to cable television shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Justified and Fargo.

The Black Hood will be presented in a gritty, noir crime thriller, as a true urban vigilante. The Shield gets a make over, and debuts as a woman who’s not to be messed with. The Fox returns, in what I’m sure will be another fun run.

In addition to the stellar creative team, Red Circle Comics has enlisted today’s top talent to contribute cover art including such A-listers as Darwyn Cooke, Fiona Staples, Paul Pope, Mike Allred, David Mack and many more yet to be revealed. This all-star event continues when issue #2 hits 12/4 where Haspiel and Waid will be joined by more top tier talent in writer J.M. DeMatteis, and the art team of Mike Cavallaro and Terry Austin on The Shield back-up.
