Pick(s) of the Week: Sandman: Overture #1 and many more…

Sandman 2013 PromoTwenty-five years since The Sandman changed the landscape of modern comics, Neil Gaiman’s legendary series is back!

The Sandman: Overture heralds Gaiman’s return to the art form that made him famous, ably abetted by artistic luminary JH Williams III, whose lush, widescreen images provide an epic scope to The Sandman’s origin story. From the birth of a galaxy to the moment that Morpheus is captured, The Sandman: Overture will feature cameo appearances by fan-favorite characters such as The Corinthian, Merv Pumpkinhead and, of course, the Dream King’s siblings: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction and Destiny. This is the first issue of a 6-issue, bimonthly miniseries features a stunning double-page interior foldout.

Really, was there any doubt this would be our pick? Gaiman’s return is huge news, especially to this crossover success.

Check out below for the rest of our picks!

Brett:

Top Pick: Sandman: Overture #1 (Vertigo) – Above says it all. This is a master writer returning to one of his biggest hits and bringing along one of the best artists out there right now.

Final Plague #3 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Perfect for Halloween, this series is beyond scary and creepy, it regularly gives me chills. The story features zombie rats and their rampage in a small town. Perfect in every sense.

The Fox #1 (Archie Comics) – Mark Waid and Dean Haspiel, that should be enough of a reason to pick up this series. The duo relaunches this classic character giving us fun action for the whole family.

Wild Blue Yonder #3 (IDW Puplishing) – I love this new series from IDW which has air pirates, dog fights and a look and feel that’s just amazing. One of my favorite new series this year.

X-Men: Battle of the Atom #2 (Marvel) – Don’t you want to know how this event ends!?

TPB/Graphic Novel of the Week: Mara (Image Comics) – The limited series from writer Brian Wood and artists Ming Doyle is collected. It’s a great meditation on celebrity as today’s icons and modern myths.

Scott:

Top Pick: Sandman: Overture #1 (Vertigo) – Wow. Where to begin, even? Twenty-five years since it’s debut, one of the premier literary/comic talents returns to one of the most inspired worlds ever created, and he’s brought one of the top artistic talents with him. I’m kind of freaking out here.

Saga #15 (Image Comics) – It’s Saga. I don’t know what else to say.

TPB/Graphic Novel Picks of the Week

Batman Vol. 3: Deeath of the Family (DC Comics) – Easily the best of Snyder’s Batman arcs, Death of the Family tells a story that will probably go down as one of the most important Joker stories ever told. Definitely pick this up.

Mara (Image Comics) – I only read the first issue, but it was so interesting, and Ming Doyle’s art was so incredibly physical, that I’ve been anxiously awaiting the trade ever since.
