We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Top Pick: 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – This series is one that has taken awhile to finish, but so far it has been worth the wait. Hopefully #5 follows shortly after!

The Flash #22 (DC Comics) – It is so far so good for The Button, and I’m excited to see how this all pans out and sets up the big fall event by Johns.

Superman #23 (DC Comics) – One of my favorite Rebirth books just keeps getting better. This looks to be another Jon heavy issue, which is okay with me.

The Mighty Thor #19 (Marvel) – Aaron has been doing a fantastic job on Thor for years, and this run is no different. I have enjoyed the epic galactic war and more Quentin Quire is never a bad thing.

Batman #23 (DC Comics) – Now that The Button is ending in this weeks The Flash, this book gets back to the aftermath of Bane. I’m looking forward to how everything plays out.

Top Pick: Star Trek: The Next Generations: Mirror Broken #1 (IDW Publishing) – The Free Comic Book Day release put this on my radar as I’m not much of a Star Trek fan (I watch the shows once in a while, but wasn’t a regular thing for me). That issue sucked me in with a Mirror world that I want to find out more about and see where this series goes.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – It feels like forever since the last issue, but as soon as I start reading it it’s like getting together with an old friend. Funny and surprisingly tense this issue.

Eleanor & Egret #2 (Aftershock Comics) – The first issue was cute and quirky with a fun story and amazing art. I can’t wait for this second one.

Ian Livingstones’ Freeway Fighter #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic game comes to comics and the first issue is fantastic. If you’re a fan of Mad Max or that type of world, this is one that’s a must get.

Josephine Baker (Self Made Hero) – A graphic novel about this trailblazing woman who lived a life that’s so amazing it can’t be true… but it is, so read up and find out more.

Top Pick: Generation X #1 (Marvel) – FINALLY! I have been waiting for this title since it’s reveal. I loved the original run of Generation X back in the day, and I know this is a new batch of students taking up the name, but Jubilee is now in charge…how can this not be good? The line up is interesting, and anything with Quentin Quire is definitely worth checking out. This should be a fun read.

Super Sons #4 (DC Comics) – This book is fun and action packed and I love this new dynamic duo of Superboy and Robin. You definitely should be reading this title.

U.S.Avengers #6 (Marvel) – Steve Rogers is looking to take down Roberto and his team. Like they’re going to let that happen. This book has been hit or miss with me, but I am curious to see how they deal with Rogers and Hydra taking over.

X-Men Gold #4 (Marvel) – Gambit turns up, so you know things are going to be exciting. I’d like to see him re-join a team of X-Men, so why not this one?

Review: Super Sons #3

Super Sons #3 captures what it is like to be a kid in their early teenage years. There is the confusion of finding yourself, constantly trying to act cool, the weirdness of puberty, and constant other pressures that kids face every day. Now add in the fact that Jon has powers that he doesn’t fully understand or can even control yet, that he is basically the son of a God, and could become one himself. As for Damian, he also lives in the shadow as the son of the greatest detective and the other most famous hero of all time, Batman. Not to mention the long line of Robins that came before him with Dick, Jason, Tim, as well as constantly battling against not becoming the other half of his blood, Ra’s al Ghul and the legacy he provides. With all of that being said, these two boys manage to work together (when they are not at each other’s throats), and get things done. They do get themselves into some trouble, especially with Damian leading the way, but you can see the bond of friendship growing, and it reminds me somewhat of me and my friends when I was younger (without the great detective work, fighting super villain robots, etc.). You get the idea.

Peter J. Tomasi is no stranger to the world of DC Comics, let alone these characters. He wrote Bruce and Damian in Batman and Robin and has been writing Clark and Jon in the current Superman run. He is a great writer and I am so glad we are seeing more of him across the DC line. This is the great work you get when you let a writer build characters for years. Superman is one of my favorite DC titles currently, and so is Super Sons. There is a good reason behind that, and it’s Tomasi’s writing. I don’t know whether he is channeling his own childhood, but he really nails the personalities of Damian and Jon and places them into believable children. Again, remove the super powers and all of that, and just look at these two as growing boys who are growing into much different men, who are forced into working together. Tomasi nails the super competitive kid who is obnoxious and always one-upping everyone, and the boy scout who always wants to do the right thing, but may follow the other kid and get into trouble sometimes. These are fantastic representations (while not exact copies) of their fathers, Batman and Superman. I read a lot of comics, and often times kids aren’t believable, thankfully with this comic, this isn’t the case.

Jorge Jimenez helps give some real personality to Jon and Damian, while also giving a realistic style with a slight cartoon touch that’s welcomed. Every character, even the little girl they are helping in this issue has personality right from the moment you see her facial expression. Jon’s friendly side is shown perfectly as is the contrasting cold side of Damian. The panel work is constantly varying, but not in any jarring way. It is a nice change to conventional comics and it never seems forced. On one page you will see ten action filled panels that flow with little to no dialogue, followed by a page broken up by a large top panel, smaller middle panels and a large bottom panel. Even this varies from page to page. I really enjoyed how Jimenez put it all together, as it helps to keep a good pace to the book. Alejandro Sanchez does a great job on colors and brings us the bright tones you’d expect in a cartoon, while also not going too overboard or too bright.

This comic is for anyone who wants to remember what it was like to be a kid but also wanted super powers. The sense of adventure here is brilliant as kids often make believe they are superheroes, and here we get both. These kids are having fun, but they are also getting into real serious and real dangerous situations. They both want to please their fathers and do the right thing, but they look at things differently. Damian can be rude to Jon all he wants, but you can see that there is a trust building with them, even if it is slow. There have been multiple times already in three short issues where these two have needed each other, and it’s great. If you want to give this book to a child, you may want to read the book for yourself first, as mileage always varies on what parents think is okay for their child. I don’t find most anything in this series too much for say a ten-year-old, but at least check it out for yourself first (which I probably don’t need to tell anyone). I can say though, for this big kid right here, this comic is awesome.

Top Pick: Batman #21 (DC Comics) – Ohhhhh yeah, it’s here! The famous button tease we’ve been given since DC Rebirth started. I’m hoping for this and The Flash to deliver on a big reveal or at least push us toward one soon.

Super Sons #3 (DC Comics) – What a fun book that features two young boys who are constantly competing, oh and they also are super heroes. But seriously, at it’s core, this book is the coming of age of two young boys finding themselves, and friendship in each other, as they try to live up to the massive legacies of their dads.

Moon Knight #13 (Marvel) – I love this comic, and we only have two more issues left, this being one of them. I really hope we get somewhat of an answer in this or the next comic, so it goes out with a bang. Lemire and Smallwood have been phenomenal on this run.

The Wild Storm #3 (DC Comics/WildStorm) – Three issues into the relaunch with Ellis and I’m in. I loved the first issue, and while the second issue felt a bit wordy after the action of the first, I bet that was mostly for world building with a bunch of the core characters, and trying to get that out of the way. I am excited for this run!

Superman #21 (DC Comics) – I’m always looking forward to a Superman book, especially since Rebirth began. This and Action Comics have been spectacular.

Top Pick: Ninjak #26 (Valiant) – I fell in love with this series last issue – it is currently one of my favourites from Valiant… if you like your Batman with a touch of Nightwing, James Bond and swords, then you may like this too.

God Country #4 (Image) – There’s a lot of personal reasons why this series is striking a cord with me, but the stubborn humanity of the series protagonist in the face of overwhelming odds is what’s pulled me in the farthest.

All-Star Batman #9 (DC Comics) – It’s Scott Snyder and Batman. I will always be excited for this.

Top Pick: Secret Empire #0 (Marvel) – So Captain America is running Hydra and he and his Nazi squad are poised to spread across the world, bringing to life their idea of a ‘perfect’ world. Yeah, ok. And yes, Hydra ARE Nazi’s, I don’t care what back peddling some writers have put out there to smooth things over. If you read that awful Civil War II tie in ‘The Oath’ is was clearly laid out what Steve sees for the future of the world…and you’re going to tell me those images didn’t look exactly like what the Nazi’s have done in the past? Ok, rant over…I am looking forward to seeing how this unfolds and to watch the super heroes kick Hydra’s ass.

Super Sons #3 (DC Comics) – I am so glad I took people’s advice and read this book. It’s only on issue #3 but it has been an incredible start and it just keeps getting better. I love this pair up of Superboy and Robin; how different they are leads to some great banter and the action has been great. And I’m really interested in finding out more about this Kid Amazo. Pick this one up if you haven’t, you will not be disappointed.

U.S.Avengers #5 (Marvel) – This title has been hit or miss with me. It hasn’t totally wowed me, but it does have it’s moments. I’m mostly looking forward to seeing how this SHIELD based team reacts to Steve Rogers new, Hydra influenced direction. And I’d love to see Sunspot and Cannonball team up to kick his Hydra loving ass…wishful thinking.

Top Pick: Black Panther: World of Wakanda #6 (Marvel) – The arcs keep getting better and the creative team shows no signs of slowing down the awesome train.

Batwoman #2 (DC Comics) – Kate Kane is facing frenemies , her own personal demons and, the bioweapon Monster Venom on the renegade heavy isle of Coryana.

Harley Quinn #18 (DC Comics) – Harley Sin is hunting a new victim and Harley Quinn is trying to find them first. It’s like Spy vs Spy, if the spies were bad ass ladies and interesting.

Nick Fury #1 (Marvel) – Nick Fury vs Frankie Noble on the French Riviera. Got Popcorn?

Top Pick: Roughnek (Gallery Books) – A brother and sister who must come together after years apart to face the disturbing history that has cursed their family. If that doesn’t sound interesting enough, it’s all by Jeff Lemire. That should easily sell this alone.

Descender #21 (Image Comics) – Amazing science fiction that’s as awesome to look at as it is to read. This is a series to check out if you haven’t yet.

Hellboy: Into the Silent Sea (Dark Horse) – Mike Mignola and Gary Gianni team up for a fantastic graphic novel.

Monsters Unleashed #1 (Marvel) – I got more sold on this series the longer the mini-series went on. I’m really intrigued to see where it goes from there.

Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign #1 (Dark Horse) – Geof Darrow, nuff said.

Top Pick: God Country #3 (Image) – A man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is cured when he’s holding a giant frigging sword. This is another series where the elevator pitch is enough to draw me in, but the humanity and depth within the story is keeping me coming back – although the fact that a mere human is flipping the bird to a pantheon of space gods is also pretty fantastic. There’s a reason this series is hitting multiple printings, and that’s because it’s really really good.

Neil Gamian’s American Gods: Shadows #1 (Dark Horse) – I’ve always wanted to read the book, but I never quite got around to it (I read prose books much slower than comics), so this series is something that really intrigues me – even though I know next to nothing about it other than Neil Gaiman wrote the book it’s based off. Does he write the series? I honestly don’t know (you may be wondering how I write for a comic website at this point…).

Black Hammer #7 (Dark Horse) – Jeff Lemire has become one of my favourite writers over the last year, and this slow moving series about a group of superheroes stuck in sleepy tow in the mid west. For some, the town is Limbo, for others Hell, and for one… it’s close to Heaven. What it actually is, hasn’t quite been revealed yet, but I’m loving the slow build up.

Conan The Slayer #7 (Dark Horse) – I’ve always had a soft spot for Conan, and when the stories look this good? I won’t say no.

Divinity III: Escape From Gulag 396 #1 (Valiant) – Archer and Armstrong meet the Stalinverse. Can’t wait.

Top Pick: Neil Gamian’s American Gods: Shadows #1 (Dark Horse) – Gaiman has returned to comics, and with one of his best novels ever coming with him. I have been awaiting this for awhile, and my anticipation is through the roof to see how he adapts such a great book to my favorite medium.

Head Lopper #5 (Image) – It returns! What an awesome surprise that we are getting more of this awesome book. The art grabs your attention and the countless lopping of heads of beasts and witches helps keep it.

God Country #3 (Image) – The first two issues have been awesome, and I expect it to get even better. Cates is crafting an excellent tall tale of his own with this book.

Batman #19 (DC Comics) – Bane is crazy, and these two foes are leaving nothing on the table. I expect tons of violence, more villains coming into play, and more twists and turns from Tom King.

Superman #19 (DC Comics) – Wow. What a reveal in Action that I won’t spoil here. What does this mean to the greater Rebirth story, and what is Mr. Oz want with Supes. Great comic and a great arc!

Top Pick: I Hate Fairyland #11 (Image Comics) – Aww yeah muffin fluffers!

Casanova Acedia #8 (Image Comics) – If this really is a flashback issue, it’ll hopefully focus on the real most interesting character of Acedia, Emil Boutique.

Island #15 (Image Comics) – Always curious to see what a new issue holds in store.

Kill or be Killed #7 (Image Comics) – In which sort-of-ex-girlfriend-but-not-really Kira gets drawn into Dylan’s demonic web. This looks bad – just the way I like it.

Sex Criminals #17 (Image Comics) – Like Casanova, this series has outgrown its main characters for me, and I look forward to it seeing other people.

Top Pick – Super Sons #2 (DC Comics) – A few of my fellow contributors had this on their watch list before issue #1 came out, and after that their reviews were highly favourable. So, I thought I’d check it out…and they were right! Damian is going to be a great partner to Superboy, being the “bad influence” that’s going to get these kids into so many adventures and yeah, probably a lot of trouble with their fathers, and I will definitely be along for the ride.

Avengers Initiative Complete Collection TP Vol. 1 (Marvel) – I just had to give this a nod. This was one of my favourite titles and I loved all the new characters that were introduced in this series; plus it paved the way to the fantastic Secret Invasion event. *sigh* remember when Marvel events were something to look forward to?

The Mighty Thor #17 (Marvel) – Thor is trapped in a ‘competition’ against the gods of the Shi’ar, and I can’t wait for her to knock them out.

Uncanny Avengers #21 (Marvel) – The Red Skull is still controlling the Avengers with his mind, and Deadpool is doing everything he can to free them. But he’s going to need a lot of help, and if cover can be trusted, it looks like Cable is about to step into the ring. This is going to be a knock down fight, and here’s hoping they all walk away. I’ve enjoyed this latest story arc and I’m looking forward to see how it all ends.

Uncanny X-Men #19 (Marvel) – Psylocke made a promise to Magneto when she joined his mission…and now she’s going to collect. I’m really just looking forward to seeing Psylocke, one of my favourite X-women in action.

This is the week of boss chicks and bad ass lady heroes and I’m so here for it that I can’t even breathe! Thank heavens for a good nor’easter because being snowed in with all this comic book goodness is a cure for the winter time blues.

Top Pick: Neil Gaian American Gods Shadows #1 (Dark Horse) – It’s one of my favorite books, in comic book form! I haven’t been this geeked out something like this since Fight Club 2 came out.

Top Pick: Black Panther World of Wakanda #5 (Marvel) – This arc is over and midnight angels are about to roll out , reign triumphant and show the villains of Wakanda that there’s some new sheriffs in town. So much lady power! So many strong , black, female character, so much awesomeness!

Batwoman #1 (DC Comics) – It’s a brand new arc in a solo comic book series and, it gives Batwoman a lot to do, some agency and, some asses to kick! So obviously, I’m here for it!

Harley Quinn #16 (DC Comics) – The red meat arc ( or as I like to call it diet soylent green with a twist) is still going on, aliens, a man with a secret plan, the evils of gentrification and the perils of men who underestimate three bad ass crime fighting ladies. Harley’s taking the fight straight to the top. Grab popcorn .

Top Pick: The Best We Could Do (Abrams Comicarts) – The debut graphic novel memoir from Thi Bui is an exploration of one family’s journey from their war-torn home in Vietnam to their new lives in America. An exploration of immigration that’s pertinent to today.

Neil Gamian’s American Gods: Shadows #1 (Dark Horse) – I’ve never read the book but have heard good things so looking forward to seeing what the fuss is about.

Dead Inside #4 (Dark Horse) – I love crime comics and noir, so super excited to read more of this series.

Super Sons #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was tons of fun, exactly what I wanted and expected and this second issue will hopefully bring more of the same. Just a fun series that’s full of energy.

The Wild Storm #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was intriguing with it’s changes to these classic characters and I’m interested in seeing where it all goes.
