Earlier today, the nominees for the 2020 Ringo Awards were revealed. The 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards are to be presented on the evening of Saturday, October 24, 2020. While normally a part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con, the 2020 Ringo Awards will be presented virtually, via Facebook and YouTube video.
The Ringo Awards has completed the 2020 nomination process, which was inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike, and both communities continued to show strong support, both in promoting the nomination process on their websites, blogs, and social media feeds, and by submitting their nominations.
Voting on the 2020 Final Ballot is restricted to comic book industry creative community — anyone involved in and credited with creating comics professionally.

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is an annual celebration of the creativity, skill, and fun of comics. The awards will be presented on Saturday, October 24, 2020 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con. The Ringo Awards is currently in the midst of the 2020 nomination process, which is inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike. Submit nominations before voting closes at midnight on June 25, 2020.
An esteemed jury of comics professionals will participate in the nomination process, selecting favorite works in over 20 categories. The 2020 jury was chosen as a representative cross-section of the comic book industry, with members representing seasoned and venerated educators, publishers, press, and creators across numerous genres.
Joan Hilty directs comics and graphic novel licensed publishing at Nickelodeon, and is a founder and consulting editor-in-chief of the book producer Pageturner. She has been a senior editor at DC Comics/Vertigo and a syndicated cartoonist. She serves on programming committees for the Brooklyn Book Festival and Miami Book Fair, and teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
James Kuhoric is a multi-award-winning author, editor, and publisher of comics. He has worked with many studios writing high profile licensed comic books, including Stargate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the fan-favorite mash-up, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. He created the western horror series Dead Irons with Jae Lee and Jason Shawn Alexander, as well as the whimsical Legendary Talespinners with Grand Bond. His love of horror comics and movies has led to successful scripting runs on Army of Darkness, Adam Green’s Hatchet, and Beware the Witch’s Shadow comics. He has been a Managing Editor at Avatar Press, a Director of Purchasing at Diamond, and is currently a Vice President at Dynamite Entertainment. Jill Thompson is a ten-time Eisner Award-winning comic book creator. She is best known for her creations The Scary Godmother and Magic Trixie, her award-winning graphic novel Wonder Woman: The True Amazon, as well as her collaborations with Neil Gaiman on The Sandman, Grant Morrison on The Invisibles, Will Pfeifer on Finals, Evan Dorkin on Beasts of Burden, Mick Foley on Tales From Wrescal Lane, and many more. Jill’s comic work has been translated into many languages and she loves to travel around the world to appear at comic conventions and festivals to meet her wonderful fans! Comics historian Carol Tilley is an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences at University of Illinois. Her 2012 research on anti-comics advocate Fredric Wertham was featured in the New York Times and other media outlets. Currently she is working on a cultural history of how young readers read, used, and subverted comics in the mid-20th century US to create a vibrant popular print culture. Tilley is a past president of the Comics Studies Society and was a 2016 Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards judge.
Gene Luen Yang writes, and sometimes draws, comic books and graphic novels. As the Library of Congress’ fifth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, he advocates for the importance of reading, especially reading diversely. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second Books, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. His two-volume graphic novel Boxers & Saints won the L.A. Times Book Prize and was a National Book Award Finalist. His other works include Secret Coders (with Mike Holmes), The Shadow Hero (with Sonny Liew), Superman from DC Comics (with various artists), and the Avatar: The Last Airbender series from Dark Horse Comics (with Gurihiru). In 2016, he was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. His most recent books are Dragon Hoops from First Second Books and Superman Smashes the Klan from DC Comics.

Fan and pro-jury voting are tallied independently, and the combined nomination ballot is compiled by the Ringo Awards Committee. The top two fan choices become nominees, and the jury’s selections fill the remaining three slots for five total nominees per category. Ties may result in more than five nominees in a single category. Nominees will be listed on the ballot alphabetically. Nomination ballot voting will be open to the public (fans and pros) starting April 10, 2020 and will close June 25, 2020.
Final Ballot Voting
After processing by the Ringo Awards Committee and Jury, the Final Ballot are targeted to be available to comic creative professionals for voting on August 26, 2020 and will be due by September 23, 2020 for final tallying. Presentation of the winners will occur at the Baltimore Comic-Con on the evening of Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Eligibility for creators and creative works is determined by publication in the preceding calendar year – print publication date takes precedence over electronic publication date. For electronic works, the date of publication is time-stamped with most publications and at least 3 episodes/installments of continuing works must have appeared during the eligibility period.
Publisher Submissions
Publishers wishing to submit works for review by the Ringo Jurors can submit up to five submissions per “Fan and Pro Nomination” and “Perennial Jury-Only Nomination” category that they feel are worthy of consideration. To participate in this process, publishers are asked to have a single representative send an email to contact@ringoawards.com for information on how to send in your submission.

The Ringo Awards Committee is proud to announce the addition of comics industry veteran Bob Wayne to the 2019 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards ceremony as the Keynote Address speaker!
Bob Wayne was born in Fort Worth, Texas. With the same last name as Bruce Wayne, it’s appropriate that he learned to learn to read from Batman and Superman comics. The first comic he remembers purchasing was Superman #137, cover dated May 1960.
A comics and science fiction convention dealer in the 1970s, he was account #40 with Phil Seuling’s Seagate Distributors. He opened a retail store in 1980 just in time to sell copies of the Dark Phoenix Saga and the debut of the Wolfman/Pérez New Teen Titans. From August 1987 to April 2015, he was at DC Comics, rising to the position of Senior Vice President – Sales.
In 2009, he received the Inkpot Award from Comic-Con International: San Diego, which he has attended every year for the last 35 years. In 2012, he received the ComicsPRO Industry Appreciation Award. Founding ComicsPRO President Joe Field noted at the time: “I would venture to say that no one in this room knows more about comics or the comics industry than Bob Wayne.”
In 2019, he delivered the keynote speech at the annual ComicsPRO retailer meeting, and was an invited guest of Comic-Con International for the 50th San Diego Comic-Con.
His published work includes stories in Charlton’s Scary Tales and DC’s Secret Origins, as well as contributions to The Comics Journal, Lone Star Book Review, and MAD Magazine. He’s the co-author (with Lewis Shiner) of DC’s Time Masters, one of the precursors to the Legends of Tomorrow television series on The CW. He created the Card Sharks for George R.R. Martin’s long-running Wild Cards series, now in development at Hulu. He’s currently a business consultant in the publishing industry and serves on the Advisory Board of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF). He remains grateful that his mother never threw away any of his comics.

Dr. Christina Blanch cannot imagine a world without comic books. She owns and manages Aw Yeah Comics in beautiful downtown Muncie, Indiana where she also teaches using comic books as educational tools. Additionally, she writes comic books, most recently Tales from the Crypt and The Damnation of Charlie Wormwood. She attends comic conventions as a writer, educator, and panel moderator. When she isn’t working, she stays in her cozy home trying to write with constant interruptions from her two dogs, Luna and Poe.
Tim Lenaghan began working at Diamond Comic Distributors in 2010 after managing the Supplier Operations department for CSN Stores LLC, now Wayfair, a Boston based e-commerce company. He graduated from Connecticut College in 2005 and has BAs in both Philosophy and Classics. As a lifelong comic book enthusiast, Tim also contributed weekly reviews to IGN.com, and participated in Emerson College’s Graphic Novel Certificate program. Tim has been working closely with publishers and vendor clients for years while successfully overseeing the management of all categories of Diamond’s Purchasing Department since July of 2015.
Afua Richardson is an American comic book illustrator best known for her work in the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series, Black Panther: World of Wakanda. Other works include Attack on Titan, and cover work for X-Men ’92, Captain Marvel, Captain America & the Mighty Avengers, and All-Star Batman. In addition to illustration, Afua is a musician, songwriter, and voice actor. She has been aptly called the Jane of all trades.
Bob Schreck is an award-winning editor who has worked in comics since 1975. His publishing career began at Comico in 1985. By 1991, he joined Dark Horse and was the editor of creator-owned titles and the Legend line, where he shepherded Frank Miller’s Sin Cityand Dark Horse Presents, among many others. In 1997, along with Joe Nozemack, he launched Oni Press, best known for Kevin Smith’s Clerks comics. In 1999, Schreck joined DC Comics, becoming Group Editor of the Batman franchise. He shepherded projects including, DK2, Batman: Hush, Sweet Tooth, Batman: Year 100, Daytripper, and Green Arrow. After working briefly at IDW, he landed at Legendary Films as Senior VP-Editor-in-Chief. He has served as the editor for such talents as Neil Gaiman, Harlan Ellison, Bernie Wrightson, Fiona Staples, Frank Miller, Jeff Lemire, Guillermo del Toro, Lynn Varley, Paul Pope, Len Wein, Amy Reeder, Dave Gibbons, Scott Morse, Grant Morrison, and many others. Currently, Schreck is semi-retired, doing freelance editing and consulting and living in Oregon with his husband, Randy, and their dog, Bandit.
Tom Spurgeon is a longtime comics industry journalist and the current Executive Director at the Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC) festival. He was editor at The Comics Journal from 1994-1999 and has performed a similar function producing the commentary, criticism, and news web site The Comics Reporter from 2004 to present. He has won or shared in eight Eisner Awards for his editorial work and writing. Spurgeon has co-authored three books about comics: Stan Lee And The Rise And Fall Of The American Comic Book (Chicago Review Press, 2003), The Romita Legacy (Dynamite, 2010), and We Told You So: Comics As Art(Fantagraphics Books, 2016). He co-wrote the syndicated newspaper strip Wildwood for King Features from 1999-2002. Spurgeon has been Executive Director at CXC since 2015.

In Fan-Only Favorites, they have updated the rules as follows: All winners of these categories will be selected by open voting. A winner in a given year’s Fan Favorite category is not eligible to be nominated in that category the following year. These categories include: Favorite Hero, Favorite Villain, Favorite New Series, Favorite New Talent, and Favorite Publisher.

Publisher Submissions
Publishers wishing to submit works for review by the Ringo Jurors can submit up to five submissions per “Fan and Pro Nomination” and “Jury-Only Nomination” category that they feel are worthy of consideration. To participate in this process, publishers are asked to have a single representative send an email to contact@ringoawards.com for information on how to send in your submission.
