Art of Rush: Serving a Life Sentence

(W) Hugh Syme, Stephen Humphries
In Shops: Oct 13, 2021
SRP: $99.99

Newly expanded and updated, this beautiful coffee table book delves into the 40-year relationship between Rush and their longtime artist and illustrator, Hugh Syme, with a foreword by drummer and lyricist Neil Peart!

Containing original illustrations, paintings, photography, and the incredible stories behind each album that Hugh Syme has designed with the band since 1975. The book’s narration was written by music journalist Stephen Humphries and includes in-depth interviews with each Rush band member and the artist. The Art of Rush also contains entertaining anecdotes and commentary from a wide array of notable musicians, actors, athletes, writers, radio personalities, and Rush insiders about their favorite Rush album covers, which clearly reveals how vital and impactful the visual representation of their music has been through the years. One of the hallmark’s of Rush releases is the considerable care and consideration that goes into each one-including the conceptual artwork. Readers may be surprised to discover just how much effort went into each concept and the execution for every album cover!

Some of the regaled stories include furtively crossing the border for a guerilla-style shoot for A Farewell to Kings, trying to herd a warren of rabbits for the cover of Presto, descending into the depths of an autopsy lab to find a brain for Hemispheres, and a stunt involving fire, whiskey, and photographer Deborah Samuel for Moving Pictures. But no history of the band’s art would be complete without the story of the creation of arguably the band’s most iconic image, The Starman from 2112.

“From the first time Hugh and I met, we shared a level of communication that would sustain us through all the years of discussing art by long distance,” said Rush’s Neil Peart. The Art Of Rush is a must for fans of Rush, art, and music everywhere.

John Lee Hooker’s Legendary Life Comes to Comics

The John Lee Hooker Estate and Z2 Comics announce the graphic novel John Lee Hooker: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer, documenting the life of the legendary blues musician, told by Gabe Soria and Jarrett Williams and illustrated by eight-time Eisner award winner Kyle Baker, known for his work with Marvel and DC Comics, including his revival of Plastic Man, this is the official graphic novel document of one of the most celebrated figures in blues music!

John Lee Hooker: One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer will be on shelves at comic, book and record stores respectively in spring 2022, just in time for the celebration of his 105TH birthday. Animaniacs: Season 1 Soundtrack is Out Now from Watertower Music

Animaniacs Season 1 (Soundtrack from the Animated Series)

WaterTower Music has released the Animaniacs Season 1 (Soundtrack from the Animated Series), featuring the music from the brand-new version of the iconic family-friendly cartoon franchise Animaniacs. Hulu, Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation proudly announced the series which saw its long-awaited return on Hulu late last year through 13 brand-new episodes, twenty-two years after the final episode of the original series had aired. Steven Spielberg returned as executive producer of the series, with Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series, and Amblin Television Co-Presidents Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank also serving as executive producers.

The Animaniacs Season 1 (Soundtrack from the Animated Series) features music performed in the show by the Animaniacs.

The series marked the first Hulu Original Series for families. The original Animaniacs made its television debut in 1993 and went on to become one of the most popular animated series for children. Since its premiere, the series has launched spin-offs and characters including Pinky and the Brain and has set the record for most Daytime Emmy Awards in the field of Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition for any animated series, winning three times.

Animaniacs is a smart update to the classic series. The producers and artists went through a rigorous process to update the character designs and establish a visual style for their world that feels fresh and familiar at the same time. The show is a comforting dose of nostalgia for fans of the original series with the return of Pinky and the Brain, and other fan-favorite characters with the original voice cast. The show is a wonderful opportunity for adults and parents who were fans of the show when they were young to introduce these beloved characters to their kids.

In addition to the visual aspect of the series, the intuitive humor and sophisticated social commentary of the show retains that of the original series, thoughtfully infuse it with modern and topical sensibilities. The music was also given a thoughtful update. For the original and soon-to-be classic musical numbers, the producers played around with current music genres as well like KPOP and EDM.
