Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Top Pick: Kill or Be Killed #5 (Image) – Ed Brubaker, Elizabeth Breitweiser, and Sean Phillips are back and I cannot be more excited. They have done a tremendous job on this book and have proven once again, they hold the crown for pulp crime comics. This comic has me nervous and excited each time a new issue comes out!

U.S.Avengers #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was such a blast, and Al Ewing is on a roll lately, and one of the best things Marvel has going for it. We will see more of the Gold $kull by the looks of it, and probably go a bit deeper on this whacky team. More Red Hulk, he’s great.

The Clone Conspiracy #4 (Marvel) – I am a massive Spider-Man fan, I won’t apologize for that, so therefore I am excited for this issue, and actually enjoy the event. Now obviously if you’re not enjoying what they are doing, don’t listen to me here, but I want to see how this wraps up, and we are almost there. We also get a double Spidey dose with Amazing Spider-Man this week!

Superman #15 (DC Comics) – You get a Superman! And you get a Superman! I’ve loved this run by Tomasi and Gleason and the last issue was so much fun and just crazy. This is one of DC’s most consistent comics and I want to see where they are going after the last wild issue. Also, Red Son Superman, Captain Carrot, and more!

Trinity #5 (DC Comics) – Francis Manapul should be reason enough for anyone to read and drool at this comic. His art is just completely on another level to me, and this book rivals The Mighty Thor for the “prettiest” comic. Also, I actually am enjoying the story of our legendary trinity quite a bit.

Top Pick: Divinity III Stalinverse: Aric Son Of The Revolution #1 (Valiant) – There’s a sense of something awesome about Valiant’s Divinity III, and while the first tie-in was good, it’s this one that has me most excited. Getting a chance to read some more about Aric of Dacia in this setting has me chomping at the bit to get my hands on the comic.

Harbinger Renegade #3 (Valiant) – What can I say? I’m a fan of Harbinger, and with Peter returning to Earth I’m looking forward to seeing how Rafer Roberts reunites the Renegades.

Deadpool the Duck #2 (Marvel) – When the first issue didn’t make me want to claw my eyes out, I kinda got curious to read the next issue. I mean… now that Deadpool The Duck is finally in the comic, I want to see what we get.

Motor Girl #3 (Abstract Studios) – Sam has problems. UFO’s are keeping her up every night, dropping in for parts and coffee, and a suspicious Area 51 fanatic is determined to catch it all on video. To make matters worse, the bank wants to repossess the junkyard and build a casino. But Sam is determined to stop them, especially when she learns the junkyard is sacred ground. This new series by Terry Moore is fun, funny, cute, and the first two issues are some of my recent favorites from anyone.

Curse Words #1 (Image) – A wizard comes to Earth to… conquer it? It’s a bit nebulous in this first issue that introduces is to Wizord, a hipster-ish wizard bringing realy magic to Earth. The first issue is entertaining and launches a stylish new series.

The Mighty Captain Marvel #1 (Marvel) – I think Carol Danvers really came off poorly in Civil War II, but I’m still interested in seeing where Marvel takes her and this series.

Monsters Unleashed #1 (Marvel) – Marvel heroes versus kaiju. Nuff said.

Revolutionaries #1 (IDW Publishing) – IDW and Hasbro’s “Revolution” is over and this series looks to bring together some of the characters from the now shared universe into a team book.

Harley Quinn #12 (DC Comics) – Joker + Harley = War of the Roses style mayhem.

Raven #5 (DC Comics) – Raven calls for familial back up to save San Francisco from the orb.

Gamora #2 (Marvel) – Gamora is on a collision course with revenge and things might not be what they seem or go as she planned.

SLAM! #3 (BOOM! Studios) – derby drama and love in comic book form, what more could you want?

Top Pick: Action Comics #969 (DC Comics) – I am blown away by this comic, and how well Dan Jurgens is juggling everything. Doomsday and Superman fighting again. Mr. Oz. Super Lex. Creepy Clark Kent. The aliens that have come after Lex, and so much more. This is one of my favorite series and I have not been disappointed by a single issue. I am very excited to find out what the hell is going on with Clark, though I doubt I get that answer in this issue.

Wonder Woman #12 (DC Comics) – I have said it before. This is DC’s most consistent book, and it just gets better with each issue. Rucka is doing such a phenomenal job here, and I get impatient waiting for the next issue on both of the storylines (and they come out every two weeks!). This is a series everyone should be reading.

Reborn #3 (Image) – The first issue was amazing, and the second issue grew the world a little more and was still fantastic. Now that we’ve met our big bad, and Bonnie’s former cat who is now an evil General (because of a bad trip to the vet), our characters are preparing to go to war. Who else will appear from Bonnie’s past?

Inhumans vs. X-Men #1 (Marvel) – I am mostly excited about this because Death of X left a bad taste in my mouth (I did not mind the twist ending, but mostly the event was unnecessary). I have my doubts about this event, and I wonder if it is even necessary, but I do like Lemire and Soule, and I hope they give us something good here, and this isn’t just filler before the new spring books for the Inhumans and X-Men.

Top Pick: Suicide Squad #8 (DC Comics) – General Zod and the Black Vault have gotten everyone going crazy at Belle Reve except for Harley Quinn ( the Black Vault made her SANE) and Enchantress who have to fight through the asylum , including their Suicide Squad friends to save them.

The Lost Boys #3 (DC Comics) – Star has fled. The Frogg brothers and missing. The Blood Belles have gone rogue and are getting their rampage on! Where’s the popcorn?  This is already better than those crap sequels and it’s still getting good.

Daredevil #14 (Marvel) – Muse gives us a murderous reason to loathe performance art. Blind spot might be going down and Murdock is getting Punisher style angry. Daredevil is about to get dark and real like it was in the 90s!

Inhumans vs. X-Men #1 (Marvel) – Inhumans vs X-men it’s about to go down!!!  Do I really need to say more?

Black #3 (Black Mask Studios) – Kareem is concerned about Juncture and its leadership and Detective Waters is starting to piece together the clues about where Kareem has disappeared to.

Top Pick: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #14 (Valiant) – It’s always a shame to see a series come to a close, but I’d much rather it end on a high note than peter off into mediocrity, and Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior has been on an incredible high note lately. I’m entirely comfortable in saying that this was my favorite ongoing series this year, and that’s a hell of a void it’s leaving.

Britannia #4 (Valiant) – A fresh new story comes to a close, and I’ve been loving the arc so far. And with the quality of the physical product, this is well worth your money.

Old Man Logan #15 (Marvel) – Despite a couple of minor missteps this has been a fantastic series. Now that we have Old Man Logan teaming up with the Howling Commandos and fighting vampires? Awesome.

Top Pick: Motor Girl #2 (Abstract Studios) – The first issue blew me away and it’s a series you absolutely need to get. Writer/artist Terry Moore does it again with this new seires featuring a woman who works in a junkyard and many or may not be seeing things like a talking gorilla and a UFO. A weirdly fun series.

Optimus Prime #1 (IDW Publishing) – The post-Revolution Hasbro connected universe kicks off and this series focuses on Optimus and his annexation of Earth as part of the Cybertonian council. It’s a hell of a concept and I’m intrigued to how it will all play out.

Transformers: Lost Light #1 (IDW Publishing) – Again I’m intrigued since this is part of the post-Revolution Hasbro connected universe. The Lost Light has been on its mission to find Cyberutopia for quite some time and I’m intrigued to see how/if this series shifts at all post event.

Rockstars #1 (Image Comics) – A new series by Joe Harris that involves rock and roll, conspiracies, demons, dark gods of rock… sign me up.

Black #3 (Black Mask Studios) – One of the most important comics on the shelves right now.

Wednesday Comic Rally: Motor Girl #1

motor-girl-1Too often comic fans rally around a series far too late, when it’s already been cancelled or announced its ending. We’ve recently seen that with the cancellation of Nighthawk and Mockingbird, two solid series that featured excellent writing, but lacked the buzz to keep them going.

Introducing “Wednesday Comic Rally” (the eventual name to still be determined) where I hope to spotlight a series, comic, graphic novel, etc., that you should go check out when you head to the shop each week. The idea is to focus on small press and indie comics as well as low selling mainstream comics and make the case as to why you should get it (and actually provide options as to where you can purchase the comic if you don’t have a local shop or prefer digital).

We saw how easily we can boost a series like Mockingbird so lets show our power as comic fans and speak with our dollars to keep quality comics around by showing our support.

This week’s rally? Motor Girl #1 by Terry Moore and Abstract Studio!

When Samantha’s junkyard is visited by a UFO looking for spare parts, she is only too happy to oblige. But when word gets out she is a reliable source, Sam’s booming alien business catches the attention of an Area 51 investigator determined to shut her down!

Moore originally was going to create this series after Strangers in Paradise, but instead he made ECHO instead. After ECHO was the new plan, but then Rachel Rising was his next project. So, finally we get this new series that’s been years in the making and the wait was worth it.

The first issue of Motor Girl debuts this week and it’s as solid as I’d had hoped giving us a cute and entertaining comic that bends genres and features the quirks that makes creator Terry Moore’s comics great. The comic star Samantha a tech handy manager of a junkyard and a talking gorilla, it’s everything I expected and more. The comic has that sensibility of a series like Wonderfalls or Pushing Daises… but with a talking gorilla. There’s a magical and whimsical feel about it that had me immediately wanting to read the next issue.

That’s helped in Moore’s distinctive black and white style which perfectly balances details. There’s not too much, there’s not too little. It’s something he’s mastered over the years and is a prime example of a black and white comic being superior to its color bretheren.

Having read the issue, it’s solid and a comic I highly recommend being one of the best I’ve read this week.

So, lets show quality can rise!
