The 2021 Ringo Awards Final Ballot Revealed

The 2021 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards are to be presented on the evening of Saturday, October 23, 2021 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con.

The Ringo Awards have announced the 2021 nominees. The nomination process was completed with the participation of the 2021 jury as well as the voting public. Fans and comic book professionals alike showed strong support in promoting the voting process on their websites, channels, and via social media.

Voting on the 2021 Final Ballot is restricted to comic book industry creative community — anyone involved in and credited with creating comics professionally. We now present the 2021 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards Final Ballot. Congrats to all of the nominees!

Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards Ballot Deadline is Approaching

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is an annual celebration of the creativity, skill, and fun of comics. The awards on Saturday, October 23, 2021 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con.

Unlike other professional industry awards, the Ringo Awards include fan participation in the nomination process along with an esteemed jury of comics professionals.

More than 20 categories will be celebrated with top honors being given at the awards ceremony in October.

Fan and Pro Nomination Ballot Deadline Approaching – Nominate now!

Fan and pro-jury voting will close on June 24, 2021. Nominations are tallied independently, and the combined nomination ballot is compiled by the Ringo Awards Committee. The top two fan choices become nominees, and the jury’s selections fill the remaining three slots for five total nominees per category. Ties may result in more than five nominees in a single category. Nominees will be listed on the ballot alphabetically.

If you have not already submitted your ballot as a fan, please do so before the deadline.

Final Ballot Voting

After processing by the Ringo Awards Committee and Jury, the Final Ballots are targeted to be available to comic creative professionals for voting on August 25, 2021 and will be due by September 22, 2021 for final tallying. Presentation of the winners will occur at the Baltimore Comic-Con on the evening of Saturday, October 23, 2021.

Nomination Eligibility

Eligibility for creators and creative works is determined by publication in the preceding calendar year – print publication date takes precedence over electronic publication date. For electronic works, the date of publication is time-stamped with most publications and at least 3 episodes/installments of continuing works must have appeared during the eligibility period.

The 2021 Ringo Awards Jury Has Been Announced

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is an annual celebration of the creativity, skill, and fun of comics. The awards will be presented on Saturday, September 23, 2021 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con. The Ringo Awards is currently in the midst of the 2021 nomination process, which is inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike. You can submit your nominations before voting closes at midnight on June 24, 2021.

An esteemed jury of comics professionals will participate in the nomination process, selecting favorite works in over 20 categories. The 2021 jury was chosen as a representative cross-section of the comic book industry, with members representing seasoned and venerated educators, retailers, publishers, press, and creators across numerous genres.

Amy Dallen is a host and writer for geek media, both independently and on shows for Geek & Sundry (The Wednesday Club, Talkin’ Comics Weekly), DC Universe (former host of DC Daily), and Collider (Collider Heroes). She is known for her performances (Callisto 6, Shield of Tomorrow), tabletop and video game streaming, and for her commentary drawing on over a decade in comics retail as a staff member at House of Secrets in Burbank, CA.

Dr. Katie Monnin is the first author to discuss teaching with graphic novels in 21st century classrooms. Alongside the award-winning Teaching Graphic Novels (2010), she has also written eight more books about teaching graphic novels and pop culture in 21st century classrooms. In 2018, Dr. Monnin created and launched Why so serious? Productions, an educational organization that creates curriculum and resource materials for teaching pop culture literature in 21st century classrooms. Dr. Monnin also wrote a monthly column for Diamond Bookshelf called “Katie’s Korner: Graphic Novel Reviews for Schools and Libraries” from 2010 – 2020. DC Comics also works with Dr. Monnin to create academic reading guides for DC’s most famous and upcoming literary titles.

John Siuntres has been part of the Chicago Radio and TV scene since 1991, hosting and producing shows for CBS Radio, CBS-TV, ESPN, Fox Sports Network, and the former Sporting News Radio Network. He covered the sport of boxing for these outlets and as a writer for Ring and Boxing Illustrated magazines. In 1998, John was nominated for a Chicago Sports Emmy Award for Best On Air Performance. In May of 2005, John created the Word Balloon Podcast, a talk show podcast featuring one on one interviews with comic book creators, novelists, screenwriters, and actors. In 2011 USA TODAY’S POP CANDY Blogger Whitney Matheson rated Word Balloon the number 1 comic book podcast. John was also featured on The Science Channel as an on-camera expert on the 8-part TV series, Prophets Of Science Fiction.

  • Brian Stelfreeze

Steenz is a St. Louis-based cartoonist, editor, and professor. She’s the cartoonist on the syndicated comic strip Heart Of The City, the co-creator of Dwayne McDuffie Award-winning GN Archival Quality, and is featured in short story anthologies such as Eisner- and Ignatz Award-winning Elements: Fire, Mine!, and Dead Beats. Steenz launched and edited the popular RPG periodical Rolled & Told. She participates in and creates community building comics-related programming, and is a frequent panelist at comic cons. Steenz currently teaches cartooning at Webster University while editing titles from Mad Cave Studios.

Brian Stelfreeze, one of the original Gaijin Studios members, is a multi-talented artist, with experience and credits penciling, inking, coloring, painting, and even writing. His comic book covers have gained him much attention and lauding, and his run painting covers on DC Comics’ Shadow of the Bat for over 50 issues is noteworthy by itself. Brian’s creative output can be found on BOOM! Studios’ Day Men, Marvel Comics’ Black Panther, and be sure to pick up BOOM! Studios’ The Signature Art of Brian Stelfreeze to get a definitive look at the works of his publishing career.

More than 20 categories will be celebrated with top honors being given at the awards ceremony in October.

The “Best Comic Strip or Panel” category has been removed and a new category, “Best Humor Webcomic” has been added alongside the “Best Webcomic” category. This change recognizes the growing ways comic strips and panels are being read online.

Publisher Submissions

Publishers wishing to submit works for review by the Ringo Jurors can submit up to five submissions per “Fan and Pro Nomination” category that they feel are worthy of consideration. To participate in this process, publishers are asked to have a single representative send an email to contact@ringoawards.com for information on how to send in your submission.

The 2020 Ringo Award Winners Have Been Revealed

Yesterday, the winners for the 2020 Ringo Awards were announced. The 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards were presented on the evening of Saturday, October 24, 2020. While normally a part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con, the 2020 Ringo Awards went virtual, via Facebook and YouTube video.

The Ringo Awards 2020 nomination process was inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike, and both communities continued to show strong support, both in promoting the nomination process on their websites, blogs, and social media feeds, and by submitting their nominations.

Voting on the 2020 Final Ballot was restricted to comic book industry creative community — anyone involved in and credited with creating comics professionally.

Kevin Smith Will Introduce Geoff Johns as 2020 Ringo Awards Keynote Speaker

The 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards will be presented at the Ringo Awards Ceremony in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con Live on the evening of Saturday, October 24, 2020. This year, the event is open to pros and fans alike to virtually attend the Award Ceremony and spend a fun evening with the comic book professional community. The Ringo Awards Committee has announced the addition of comics industry veteran writer, executive, and film and television producer Geoff Johns to the 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards ceremony as the Keynote Address speaker!

Film and comics legend, Kevin Smith will open the show and introduce his friend, Geoff, as the keynote speaker.

Comic creative professionals, publishers, retailers, and fans will gather on Saturday night, October 24, 2020, to experience the comic book industry celebrating the recognition of their peers, co-workers, and competitors at the 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards. This year’s Ringo Awards is sponsored by Cards, Comics & Collectibles, and the Baltimore Comic-Con; BOOM! Earlier today, the nominees for the 2020 Ringo Awards were revealed. The 2020 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards are to be presented on the evening of Saturday, October 24, 2020. While normally a part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con, the 2020 Ringo Awards will be presented virtually, via Facebook and YouTube video.

The Ringo Awards has completed the 2020 nomination process, which was inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike, and both communities continued to show strong support, both in promoting the nomination process on their websites, blogs, and social media feeds, and by submitting their nominations.

Voting on the 2020 Final Ballot is restricted to comic book industry creative community — anyone involved in and credited with creating comics professionally.

The Ringo Awards 2020 Jury Announced

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is an annual celebration of the creativity, skill, and fun of comics. The awards will be presented on Saturday, October 24, 2020 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con. The Ringo Awards is currently in the midst of the 2020 nomination process, which is inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike. Submit nominations before voting closes at midnight on June 25, 2020.

An esteemed jury of comics professionals will participate in the nomination process, selecting favorite works in over 20 categories. The 2020 jury was chosen as a representative cross-section of the comic book industry, with members representing seasoned and venerated educators, publishers, press, and creators across numerous genres.

Joan Hilty

Joan Hilty directs comics and graphic novel licensed publishing at Nickelodeon, and is a founder and consulting editor-in-chief of the book producer Pageturner. She has been a senior editor at DC Comics/Vertigo and a syndicated cartoonist. She serves on programming committees for the Brooklyn Book Festival and Miami Book Fair, and teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

James Kuhoric

James Kuhoric is a multi-award-winning author, editor, and publisher of comics. He has worked with many studios writing high profile licensed comic books, including Stargate SG-1, Battlestar Galactica, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the fan-favorite mash-up, Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash. He created the western horror series Dead Irons with Jae Lee and Jason Shawn Alexander, as well as the whimsical Legendary Talespinners with Grand Bond. His love of horror comics and movies has led to successful scripting runs on Army of Darkness, Adam Green’s Hatchet, and Beware the Witch’s Shadow comics. He has been a Managing Editor at Avatar Press, a Director of Purchasing at Diamond, and is currently a Vice President at Dynamite Entertainment. Jill Thompson

Jill Thompson is a ten-time Eisner Award-winning comic book creator. She is best known for her creations The Scary Godmother and Magic Trixie, her award-winning graphic novel Wonder Woman: The True Amazon, as well as her collaborations with Neil Gaiman on The Sandman, Grant Morrison on The Invisibles, Will Pfeifer on Finals, Evan Dorkin on Beasts of Burden, Mick Foley on Tales From Wrescal Lane, and many more. Jill’s comic work has been translated into many languages and she loves to travel around the world to appear at comic conventions and festivals to meet her wonderful fans! The Scary Godmother has been adapted to the stage as a play, and then to television for Cartoon Network! Carol Tilley

Comics historian Carol Tilley is an associate professor in the School of Information Sciences at University of Illinois. Her 2012 research on anti-comics advocate Fredric Wertham was featured in the New York Times and other media outlets. Currently she is working on a cultural history of how young readers read, used, and subverted comics in the mid-20th century US to create a vibrant popular print culture. Tilley is a past president of the Comics Studies Society and was a 2016 Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards judge.

Gene Luen Yang

Gene Luen Yang writes, and sometimes draws, comic books and graphic novels. As the Library of Congress’ fifth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, he advocates for the importance of reading, especially reading diversely. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second Books, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. His two-volume graphic novel Boxers & Saints won the L.A. Times Book Prize and was a National Book Award Finalist. His other works include Secret Coders (with Mike Holmes), The Shadow Hero (with Sonny Liew), Superman from DC Comics (with various artists), and the Avatar: The Last Airbender series from Dark Horse Comics (with Gurihiru). In 2016, he was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. His most recent books are Dragon Hoops from First Second Books and Superman Smashes the Klan from DC Comics.

The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards is an annual celebration of the creativity, skill, and fun of comics. The awards return for their third year on Saturday, October 24, 2020 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, The Baltimore Comic-Con.

Unlike other professional industry awards, the Ringo Awards include fan participation in the nomination process along with an esteemed jury of comics professionals. 

More than 20 categories will be celebrated with top honors being given at the awards ceremony in October.

Fan and Pro Nominations

Fan and pro-jury voting are tallied independently, and the combined nomination ballot is compiled by the Ringo Awards Committee. The top two fan choices become nominees, and the jury’s selections fill the remaining three slots for five total nominees per category. Ties may result in more than five nominees in a single category. Nominees will be listed on the ballot alphabetically. Nomination ballot voting will be open to the public (fans and pros) starting April 10, 2020 and will close June 25, 2020.

Final Ballot Voting

After processing by the Ringo Awards Committee and Jury, the Final Ballot are targeted to be available to comic creative professionals for voting on August 26, 2020 and will be due by September 23, 2020 for final tallying. Presentation of the winners will occur at the Baltimore Comic-Con on the evening of Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Nomination Eligibility

Eligibility for creators and creative works is determined by publication in the preceding calendar year – print publication date takes precedence over electronic publication date. For electronic works, the date of publication is time-stamped with most publications and at least 3 episodes/installments of continuing works must have appeared during the eligibility period.

Publisher Submissions

Publishers wishing to submit works for review by the Ringo Jurors can submit up to five submissions per “Fan and Pro Nomination” and “Perennial Jury-Only Nomination” category that they feel are worthy of consideration. To participate in this process, publishers are asked to have a single representative send an email to contact@ringoawards.com for information on how to send in your submission.
