Sarah Andersen, Frank Cho, Todd Dezago, Kevin Maguire, Joe Prado, and Jim Rugg are coming to Baltimore Comic Con

The 2023 Baltimore Comic-Con will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on September 8-10, 2023. The Baltimore Comic-Con welcomes comic guests Sarah Andersen, Frank Cho, Todd Dezago, Kevin Maguire, Joe Prado, and Jim Rugg. Tickets are available now.

Sarah Andersen is a 30-year-old cartoonist and illustrator. She graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2014 and currently lives in Portland, Oregon. Her semi-autobiographical comic strip, Sarah’s Scribbles, finds the humor in living as an introvert with beloved pets and the continual struggles with waking up in the morning, being productive, and dealing with social situations. She likes coffee, cats, and covens.

Ringo Award winner and Harvey and Eisner Award nominee Frank Cho launched his career as a comic strip artist at the University of Maryland-College Park student newspaper, penning University2, which was the predecessor of his creator-owned syndicated strip and comic series, Liberty Meadows. His body of work also includes Marvel Comics’ New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Shanna the She-Devil, New Ultimates, and X-Men: Schism, as well as Jungle Girl for Dynamite Entertainment. His recent work can be seen on covers from DC’s Harley Quinn.

Todd Dezago is a writer best known for his work in comics. He has written for Marvel, DC Comics, Image, Dark Horse, Scout Comics, and others. His credits include scripting the adventures of Spider-Man, X-Factor, the X-Men, the Avengers, Marvel Super Hero Squad, the Justice League, Flash, Impulse, Batman, and Young Justice. Todd co-created the high-adventure fantasy title, Tellos, with Mike Wieringo and The Perhapanauts with Craig Rousseau.

Kevin Maguire is an artist who is known for his work on Justice League International, Man Of Steel, Adventures Of Captain America, Batman Confidential, Defenders, and so many more it would just seem like bragging. You probably know him as the guy who draws goofy facial expressions. In his spare time, he enjoys yoga, IMAX films, and tweeting.

Joe Prado’s first and foremost passion is COMICS!

Joe started his career back in the early 90s working as a professional comic-book artist and illustrator on the Brazilian market. During that period, he produced hundreds of fantasy, horror, super-heroes, and sci-fi illustrations and comics for a myriad of publishers, books, and magazines.

He’s also known as the co-creator of the comic book mini-series UFO Team, with the writer Marcelo Cassaro.

In 2004, he started to produce comics for the US market. Among his credits are Action Comics, Superman, Green Lantern, Birds of Prey, Rann/Thanagar War, Teen Titans, The Warlord, Red Sonja, The Phantom, and many others.

In 2009 he began his 11-years partnership with the amazing artist, Ivan Reis on Blackest Night, which led them to Brightest Day, and then their world-renowned run on Aquaman and Justice League, all four series with the star-writer Geoff Johns.

After that, Joe worked on books such as Multiversity, Cyborg, Justice League of America, The Terrifics, Batman, Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, Geiger, Joker, Nightwing, and many others.

Joe is also the recipient of two Inkwell Awards. In 2016, he won the Inkwell Award for “Favorite Inker” and, in 2018, for “Props – Talent Who Deserves More Attention”, being nominated for the prestigious awards several times. In 2021, he became an Official Ambassador for the Inkwell Awards.

In 2020, Joe became one of the teachers of the on-line studies of the world-renowned art school, Joe Kubert School for Cartooning.

20 years ago, Joe started to work as an agent on the very first Brazilian comics agency, Art&Comics International, and that’s when he found his second biggest passion, helping artists.

Joe was also the co-founder of Chiaroscuro Studios, which he left early in 2022 to create and spearhead Prado’s Art & Design Studios, representing dozens of comic-book artists in the American and European Markets.

Jim Rugg is a writer, artist, designer, illustrator, and YouTuber. His comics include Hulk Grand Design, Street Angel, The PLAIN Janes, Afrodisiac, and Supermag. Honors include Eisner and Ignatz Awards and AIGA’s 50 Books/50 Covers selection. He is the co-host of YouTube’s popular comics channel — Cartoonist Kayfabe.

The Baltimore Comic Con has announced the addition comic artists Ron Garney, Kevin Maguire, Al Milgrom, Andy Price, Christopher Uminga, and Chrissie Zullo. Tickets for admission and VIP experiences are online now.

Ron Garney, over the course of his established thirty-five year career, has built a large fan following, illustrating some of the industry’s greatest characters, such as the The Amazing Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Silver Surfer, X-Men, JLA (for DC), Captain America, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, G.I. Joe, Skaar: Son of the Hulk, Wolverine, Ultimate Captain America, Uncanny X-Force, Thor: God of Thunder, his creator-owned Men of Wrath, Daredevil, Savage Sword of Conan, and is currently working with film legend Keanu Reeves on the comic BRZRKR, which has also been picked up for a live action film and anime series on Netflix. Ron has been nominated twice for the industry’s coveted Eisner Award for Best Artist and Best Serialized Story (Captain America) and an Inkwell nomination for BRZRKR. Ron has also worked in the film industry, notably on I Am Legend (starring Will Smith) as costume illustrator and did illustrating for Marvel’s Netflix series, Daredevil. He is also a songwriter and musician, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blackbelt and instructor, and resides in Connecticut with his wife and four children. Kevin Maguire is an artist who is known for his work on Justice League International, Man Of Steel, Adventures Of Captain America, Batman Confidential, Defenders, and so many more it would just seem like bragging. You probably know him as the guy who draws goofy facial expressions. In his spare time, he enjoys yoga, IMAX films, and tweeting.

Allen Milgrom was born March 6, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. Al graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in art and design in 1972 and moved to New York. After a year interning at DC Comics with legendary artist Murphy Anderson, Al began inking and, soon after, penciling. He’s worked on lots of comics over the years, (penciling, inking and even some writing) primarily for Marvel Comics, but he also co-created Firestorm at DC Comics and did work at Archie Comics as well as Atlas, Dark Horse, and others. He also did stints as an editor at Marvel and DC.

Married to his wife, Judy, since 1979, they have a daughter and two sons and the cutest grandson and granddaughter ever to walk the earth (of course he may be biased).

Illustrator and writer Andy Price has been the lead artist for the incredibly successful and record breaking My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic comic books from IDW Publishing. Andy has also done work for Storm King Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Archie Comics, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Rittenhouse Archives, and LEGO, among others. Other licenses include Adventure Time, Quantum Leap, Dark Shadows, Betty & Veronica, and Star Trek. Andy is a graduate of the Joe Kubert School, and works in most mediums. He lives in Georgia, USA where he watches horror films, scoops cat boxes, and celebrates James T. Kirk’s birthday.

Christopher Uminga is a Connecticut-based artist who has spent his career developing a unique style that blends together creepy and cute. He has worked on several projects for DC Comics/Warner Bros, Lucasfilm, Disney, and many others. In 2022, Chris worked with DC Comics on the YA Graphic Novel Batman’s Mystery Casebook that was released in August.

Chrissie Zullo is a comic book artist, most recently creating covers for Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man, The New Fantastic Four, She-Hulk, Hulk, Thor, Silk, AXE: Judgment, Edge of Spiderverse, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, Gwenverse, and more to come! She has also designed a line of statues for DC Collectibles Artist Alley series.

DC announces Tales From Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee!

This December, in honor of what would have been Stan Lee’s 100th birthday, DC is releasing Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee, a commemorative one-shot anthology featuring new stories based on Lee’s (with film producer Michael Uslan) interpretations of core DC characters from his Just Imagine series of one-shots (2001-2002).

This 96-page Prestige format one-shot hits comic book stores and participating digital platforms on Tuesday, December 27; the anthology features 10 new stories spotlighting the Just Imagine characters from an incredible mix of celebrated comic book storytellers and new and emerging voices in comic books. In addition to a new story from Michael Uslan, this anthology includes stories written by Mark Waid, Jerry Ordway, Kenny Porter, Stephanie Williams, Michael W. Conrad and Becky Cloonan, Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, Meghan Fitzmartin, Steve Orlando, and Zac Thompson.

While taking an assignment to bodyguard Lex Luthor, Christopher Chance, the Human Target, is poisoned and is in a race against time to find out who’s responsible. On August 23, writer Tom King and a host of fan-favorite artists – Mikel Janín, Rafael Albuquerque, Kevin Maguire, and The Human Target artist Greg Smallwood – team up to tell stories of what happened before Chance drank the poison intended for Lex Luthor in Tales of The Human Target.

In this one-shot anthology, Christopher Chance “teams up” with members of the Justice League International – some of whom already are prominently involved in this story – in four connecting mysteries, and one of them may be responsible for the poison that has The Human Target living on borrowed time.

This 48-pager features an incredible main cover by series artist Smallwood, reminiscent of hard-boiled detective novels of the 60’s and 70’s. The comic also features a variant cover by artist David Marquez and a 1 in 25 ratio variant cover from returning Batman artist Jorge Jiménez. Check your local comic book store for availability and pre-ordering details.

For fans that have missed individual issues of the series and want to catch up all at once, The Human Target Book One collects the first six issues of the series by Tom King and Greg Smallwood and is a great way to catch up on the series to date before the second half of the series starts in September (issue #7 on sale September 23).

DC is Celebrating George Perez’s Birthday for All of June

During June, DC will celebrate the 68th birthday of George Pérez, one of the titans of the comic industry, with a two-page spread featuring some of his most beloved characters. Working from a layout designed by Dan Jurgens, some of the industry’s biggest names including Jim Lee, Walter Simonson, Alex Ross, Dave Gibbons, Todd McFarlane, Daniel Sampere, Jerry Ordway, Nicola Scott and many more, collaborated on the colorful spread.

In December, Pérez took to Facebook to announce that he has been diagnosed with Stage 3 Pancreatic Cancer. His doctors estimated he has six months to a year left, and rather than undergoing time-consuming treatment, Pérez decided to spend the time with his friends and family.

The tribute features the following DC characters that Pérez is most known for, as well as the man himself, drawn by a number of the top artists in the industry and colored by Hi-Fi:

Artwork and additional details on each of the covers will be announced at a later date.

A special version of the Dark Crisis #7 variant cover will be available for sale by The Hero Initiative to raise funds for one of Pérez’s favorite charities. Pérez is a founding member of Hero Initiative’s board of directors and has served as chair of its Disbursement Committee.

The Baltimore Comic-Con is bringing industry mainstays Cliff Chiang, Todd Dezago, Mike Hawthorne, Jamal Igle, Kevin Maguire, Steve Orlando (Saturday and Sunday only), and Tom Raney in for 2021. Tickets are on sale and online tickets close the week of the show, so don’t procrastinate!

Cliff Chiang began his career as an assistant editor at DC’s Vertigo imprint before moving into freelance illustration. His previous work includes runs on Human Target, Green Arrow & Black Canary, Wonder Woman with Brian Azzarello, and the Eisner Award-winning Paper Girls, co-created with Brian K. Vaughan. Cliff is currently writing and drawing a book for DC’s Black Label.

Todd Dezago is a writer best known for his work in comics. He has written for Marvel, DC Comics, Image, Dark Horse, Scout Comics, and others. His credits include scripting the adventures of Spider-Man, X-Factor, the X-Men, the Avengers, Marvel Super Hero Squad, the Justice League, Flash, Impulse, Batman, and Young Justice. Todd co-created the high-adventure fantasy title, Tellos, with Mike Wieringo and The Perhapanauts with Craig Rousseau.

Mike Hawthorne has provided the artwork for various comics, including a record setting run on Deadpool as well as Daredevil, Spider-Man, Hulk, Superman, and more. His work has been nominated for Harvey and Eisner Awards. Outside of comics, Mike has done storyboard and conceptual art for Epic Games, Marvel, Fox, Illumination, and Universal. Archaia/BOOM! Studios recently published his autobio-comic Happiness Will Follow.

A recipient of the 2011 Inkpot Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comic Art, Jamal Igle is the writer/artist/creator of Molly Danger for Action Lab Entertainment. The co-creator of Venture with Dynamo 5 creator/writer Jay Faerber and the penciller/co-creator of The Wrong Earth for AHOY Comics, Jamal is a comic industry veteran. Jamal’s detailed pencils have graced books as varied as The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas and the all ages action miniseries Race Against Time, as well as mainstream hits such as G.I. Joe, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Green Lantern. Jamal has served as the series artist for popular runs on Firestorm the Nuclear Man, Nightwing, Tangent: Superman’s Reign, Superman, Supergirl, and Zatanna for DC Comics, Noble Causes for Image Comics, and a four-issue run on New Warriors for Marvel Comics. He’s done just about everything from acting on the small screen and voiceovers for commercials, packaging books for Scholastic, and serving as storyboards artist for Roughnecks: Starship Trooper Chronicles and Max Steel: MX1 for Sony Animation. Jamal is also a popular guest lecturer on the subjects of comics and animation. Jamal worked on White, the sequel to the hit series Black from Black Superpowers/Black Mask Studios in late Summer 2019.

Kevin Maguire is an artist who is known for his work on Justice League International, Man Of Steel, Adventures Of Captain America, Batman Confidential, Defenders, and so many more it would just seem like bragging. You probably know him as the guy who draws goofy facial expressions. In his spare time, he enjoys yoga, IMAX films, and tweeting.

Steve Orlando writes and edits, including Virgil, Undertow, and stories in the Eisner Award-nominated Outlaw Territory and Eisner-winning Love is Love at Image Comics. As well, he launched 2015’s Midnighter and 2016’s Midnighter and Apollo, both nominated for GLAAD awards, and took part in Justice League of America, Batman and Robin Eternal, Doom Patrol: Milk Wars, Supergirl, Batman/The Shadow, and Wonder Woman for DC Entertainment, as well as The Shadow/Batman for Dynamite Entertainment, Namesake for BOOM! Studios, Crude for Skybound Entertainment, Dead Kings, Kill a Man, Rainbow Bridge, Party and Prey, and Project Patron for Aftershock Entertainment. His 2018 sold-out launch Martian Manhunter was one of Tor’s Best Single Issues of 2018. In 2020, he returned to Image Comics with Commanders in Crisis, as well as The Pull, a headline release from TKO Studios. He launched the serial Starward with Heavy Metal in the same year, and in 2021, took over the magazine with the Boulet Brothers in the Boulet Brothers Heavy Metal Halloween Takeover. Outside of comics, he has been featured in Hello Mr. and National Geographic. In animation, he’s worked with Man of Action Studios on season four of Ben 10, and in translation, has produced localizations for Arancia Studio’s Best-Selling Unnatural, Mercy, Sweet Paprika, and Deep Beyond at Image Comics, and Un/Sacred with Ablaze Publishing. In 2021, he debuted at Marvel Comics with Curse of the Man-Thing, as well as Magneto and the Mutant Force, Extreme Carnage, Star Wars: Life Day, and the relaunched Marauders.

Tom Raney has spent much of his career working for the mid- to large-size publishers in the comics industry. He has contributed to Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, Valiant’s relaunched titles, and Dark Horse Comics’ Star Wars among many other titles and publishers. In recent history, his artwork can be seen within the pages of DC Comics’ Threshold, Marvel’s Incredible Hulk, and Titan Comics’ Monster Massacre hardcover collection.
