Mini Reviews: X-Men Red, Iron Man, Wolverine, and The Nasty

Wolverine #33

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Alfie

X-Men Red #11 (Marvel) – From the ashes of Sins Of Sinister arise the calm before the storm! War is coming! X-Men Red #11 by Al Ewing, Jacopo Camagni, and Stefano Caselli is the series’ triumphant return after a three-month hiatus. Even though the series went on break, the aftermath of the intervening Sins Of Sinister event and Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants carries on in this issue. It’s an issue entirely of conversations with no action scenes. Luckily Al Ewing deftly navigates this with precision cutting dialogue filled with tension and excitement. The art is no slouch either. The scenes are well-crafted and filled with interesting back-and-forth layouts. Of particular note is one amazing spread toward the end of the issue. This issue is the rising tension before the much-teased Genesis War storyline coming up in the following issues. Even with that being said it’s still a great issue filled with moments readers won’t want to miss! Overall: 9.0 Recommendation: Buy

Invincible Iron Man #6 (Marvel) – Tony Stark is broke and destitute, relapsed into drinking, and worst of all he’s lost his company to the ruthless Feilong who is mass producing Mutant hunting Stark Sentinels. But none of that matters since Invincible Iron Man #6 by Gerry Duggan and Andrea Di Vito is an 80s throwback. It’s a fun issue but ultimately unimportant to the ongoing narrative. The cover would lead you to assume the issue is a fight between Iron Man and the West Coast Avengers. However as has been the case a few times with this series, the cover lies! The real meat of the issue is a fight between Iron Man and the villainous White Queen, Emma Frost! It’s a fun brawl. Di Vito brings real joy with fast and frenetic action. Emma gets a lot of opportunities to use her telepathy in fun and creative ways against the Bullet-Head. The unabashed homage to the marvel universe of the 80s is a wonderful little thing to behold, sliding timescale be damned. Overall: 7.5 Recommendation: Read

Wolverine #33 (Marvel) – Beast is on a warpath and the only man who can stop him is Wolverine! with a little help from some friends. Wolverine #33 by Benjamin Percy and Juan Jose Ryp is the latest installment of the Weapons of X arc. The issue largely focuses on gathering Wolverine’s various allies as they all converge on Beast. It’s a good issue but it’s certainly the build-up for the end game of this arc. The art by Ryp is colored by Frank D’Armata, normally I’m not a fan of D’Armata’s coloring work but with Ryp’s pencils, it fits. The art is detailed and gloriously grotesque in a way befitting a Wolverine story. Ryp can draw some of the most visceral gore you’ll find in big two comics. The issue also contains a backup story by Gene Luen Yang and Peter Nguyen. It’s a fine little backup with good art focusing on Wolverine and the little sister of Shang-Chi taking on a monster. It has cute expressive art but it’s a pretty throwaway story, but hey it’s an extra story for the same price, so you won’t see me complaining! Overall: 8.0 Recommendation: Read

The Nasty #2 (Vault Comics) – The kids are trying to figure out what to do and if they can actually create a horror movie before a major festival comes to town. Then, there’s that whole slasher that’s hanging around and only one of them can see? The second issue feels a bit like Clerks III with the crew coming together and figuring out how to make a movie but it’s the ending that really made us take notice. There’s an intriguing direction for all of this to go from here. The art continues to be solid with a style that balances its humor, horror, and heart. Overall, an intriguing series that’s delivering something new with the horror genre. Overall: 7.95 Recommendation: Read

BLAST TO THE PAST!
It’s the untold story of Iron Man vs. the West Coast Avengers! But why is he fighting the likes of Wonder Man and Hawkeye? And how do the events of the past affect Tony’s future?

Ironheart blasts off on Derrick Chew’s Invincible Iron Man #7 variant cover

Gerry Duggan and Juan Frigeri’s hit new run of Invincible Iron Man is heating up in the months ahead with shocking Fall of X developments including the rise of Stark Sentinels and Tony’s new alliance with Emma Frost! Invincible Iron Man #7 will see Tony taking the initiative, building a new suit of armor to infiltrate and destroy Stark Unlimited, which has fallen into the hands of his new nemesis, Feilong!

Hitting stands in June, this highly-anticipated issue will get a stunning variant cover by acclaimed cover artist Derrick Chew. Over the last few months, this rising superstar has drawn Marvel’s greatest heroes in show stopping variant covers, and now spotlights IRONHEART! The young super genius helped Iron Man get back on his feet in the opening chapters of Duggan and Frigeri’s new run. Will she stand by Tony’s side again in the dark days to come?

Invincible Iron Man #5 builds new threats for both Iron Man and Mutants

Invincible Iron Man #5

I’ve written before on my personal Tumblr how Invincible Iron Man by Gerry Duggan and Juan Frigeri opened to a somewhat rocky start. However, the last couple of issues have only improved in quality. Invincible Iron Man #5 continues that trend with flying colors. Tony Stark has lost his company to his new mutant-hating nemesis, Feilong. With his back against the wall, he goes to the enemy of his enemy, asking for the aid of Krakoa’s one and only Emma Frost!

The cover of Invincible Iron Man #5 prominently features Emma Frost, but that’s a bit misleading (as covers often are). Emma does feature in the issue, but her page time, while sweet, is brief. That’s not the only reason X fans might want to check out the issue though. Feilong debuted in Duggan’s X-Men series and has ties to the anti-mutant organization Orchis. The issue continues to build the threat of Feilong in interesting and compelling ways while also laying seeds for the upcoming X-Men Hellfire Gala 2023.

A complaint I had with the last issue was the fight between Tony and Feilong. The fight felt pretty one-sided. For a new threat, Feilong got rocked by Tony. It failed to set him up as a good physical threat to Tony. Luckily in this issue, it’s rectified. The action sets Feilong up as much more of a threat not only physically but in terms of mechanical power as well!

Frigeri’s art aided by colorist Bryan Valenza and letterer Joe Caramagna continues to shine when the action hits. One of the best parts of the art is how it depicts the mechanic structure of Stark technology. There is a tactile sense from the images on display that elevates the scenes. The art isn’t out of this world but it shines where it counts.

Invincible Iron Man continues to walk a fine line of working as a standalone book while also being part of a larger story Duggan is telling across his books. The issue does a good job filling in readers on the relevant events from X-Men and it never feels like you need to have read the book, but it certainly improves both if you have.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Seven Years in Darkness #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alien #1 (Marvel) – An alien unthaws from the snow ice and we’re always pumped for a new alien adventure.

Bulls of Beacon Hill #4 (AfterShock) – The series has been fantastic with a nice brutal and gritty mob story.

By the Horns: Dark Earth #8 (Scout Comics) – The blight continues to spread across Solothus as the Augernaut repairs near completion and Yun Ma’s plan for the continent begins to take shape. An awesome fantasy series with amazing art.

Deep Cuts #1 (Image Comics) – Stories of struggle, joe, and hope through the history of jazz. We’re excited to read this blend of music and comics.

Green Arrow #1 (DC Comics) – The Emerald Archer is lost, and it will take Oliver Queen’s whole family to find him! We’re pumped for a new Green Arrow series and we’re hoping the entire crew gets the spotlight they deserve.

Invincible Iron Man #5 (Marvel) – Tony is getting roped into the world of the X-Men and how it plays out should be something new and interesting.

Local Man #3 (Image Comics) – The series has been great blending classic image superheroes with a bit of a modern twist. Really solid so far and one for fans of superhero comics.

Money Shot Comes Again #1 (Vault Comics) – The XXX-plorers are back on their hands and knees for the good of humanity! When the giant ass space jellyfish who run the ordered universe arrive on earth, the porn-stars-cum-science explorers must put away grudges, crushes, and side-hustles to once again take one (or two! or three!) for the team.

Plush #6 (Image Comics) – Rednecks versus cannibalistic, serial-killing furries. The series has been crazy in all of the right ways.

Seven Years in Darkness #1 (CEX Publishing) – The Academy of Black Magic has reopened its doors for the first time in 200 years! Seventy-two children will walk through the Academy doors for freshmen year. But only seven will graduate and walk out alive!

Silence #1 (Literati Press) – Johanna Jones returns to her hometown of Anthem, a down-on-its-luck shipping town, to discover the ship her father sailed on has gone missing. She ends up aboard a yellow submarine named the Heart of Gold, headed directly into Hades’ Hexagon to find the missing crew, accompanied by her childhood best friend, a rich young addict, and a punk legend.

Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1 (Marvel) – The event wraps up and we’re intrigued to see how it’s all pulled off in one issue.

MegaCon 2023: Fall of X details revealed!

At the Marvel Comics: Fall of X Panel at MegaCon Orlando, fans got fresh insights into the X-Men’s upcoming new era, Fall of X! Senior Editor Jordan D. White was joined by a trio of X-Men talent—writers Gerry Duggan and Benjamin Percy and artist Joshua Cassara—to chat about some of the new series, stories, and shakeups in this exciting era.

Since 2019’s revolutionary House of X and Powers of X series, mutantkind has experienced unparalleled growth and prosperity on the island nation Krakoa – but can it really last forever? It all begins in July’s shocking X-Men: Hellfire Gala #1 one-shot where danger, conspiracy, and sacrifice threatens to shatter everything mutantkind accomplished on Krakoa. Revealed earlier today and showcased at the panel was a brand-new Fall of X teaser image by Bryan Hitch. The haunting image is accompanied by a list of Fall of X tie-in titles, some of which have yet to be announced!

Below are additional upcoming titles and issues revealed at today’s panel:

  • Announced last month at Marvel Unlimited’s X-Men: 60 Uncanny Years Live Virtual Event, the devastating events of the Hellfire Gala and the tragic circumstances of Fall of X calls for the return of the Avengers’ Unity Squad in a new run of Uncanny Avengers written by Gerry Duggan and drawn by Javier Garrón! The new lineup will include Captain America, Rogue, Deadpool, Quicksilver, Psylocke, and Penance. This powerhouse new team must solve the mystery of who the new, murderous Captain Krakoa is — and stop his army of killers from igniting the fires of a new world war. Fans can check out the team on the newly revealed main cover of this highly-anticipated series!
  • Duggan will also continue to write X-Men throughout Fall of X. Following the Hellfire Gala, the title will see a cast shakeup with new additions such as the winner of this year’s X-Men fan vote and Kate Pryde. She’s been known as Kitty, Sprite, Ariel, Red Queen and Captain Kate. Now, as the X-Men finds their way through their darkest hour… SHADOWKAT emerges! Harkening back to the character’s ninja training, see the characters radical transformation in a new design sheet by visionary artist Peach Momoko.
  • Benjamin Percy’s run on X-Force has been delivering pulse-pounding action and thought-provoking drama since the Dawn of X, and now the stakes are higher than ever! Daniel Acuña joins as cover artist for this bold new era, and his X-Force #43 piece unveils new team leader Colossus on the frontlines with the squad…but where he leads them you will never expect!
  • Percy’s astounding work on Wolverine will also be kicked into high gear as the dire circumstances of Fall of X send Logan on the run and into a collision course with Ghost Rider! Alongside acclaimed artist Geoff Shaw, Percy will bring both his Wolverine and Ghost Rider runs together in a four-part epic: Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance! A demonic serial killer is murdering innocent mutants. But what is it about this deadly new villain that forces our two heroes to team up? And what buried secret does he share with Wolverine and Ghost Rider’s never-before-seen very first meeting in the past? The crossover kicks off in August’s Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance Alpha before unfolding in the pages of Ghost Rider #17 and Wolverine #36 and coming to a fiery conclusion in Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance Omega.
  • Fans also got a peek at Tony Stark’s new stealth armor on the cover of Gerry Duggan and Juan Frigeri’s Invincible Iron Man #9. With Feilong in control of Stark Unlimited and using its resources to build Stark Sentinels, Tony Stark has proposed a new alliance with Emma Frost. X-Men and Invincible Iron Man pave the war for Fall of X

Fall of X is coming, and as the X-Men brace themselves for the dark road ahead, they’ll also find strength in mutantkind’s new ally: Iron Man! Writer Gerry Duggan, currently helming the X-Men and Invincible Iron Man ongoing series, will weave together and feature essential stories in both titles that will impact the X-Men’s upcoming status quo.

Things have already been set in motion as Feilong, the mutant-hating industrialist from Duggan’s X-MEN, is now in control of Stark Unlimited’s incredible resources and plans to use them in Orchis’ vicious war against mutants. As events escalate, will Tony step up to become one mutantkind’s greatest defenders? Or will he join them in the bleak world that awaits them all in Fall of X?

Then in Invincible Iron Man #7, Tony Stark is in dire need of a win! But how does he plan to get ahead? By building a new suit of armor! The suit’s first objective? Infiltrate and destroy Stark Industries! And that’s not all, July’s Invincible Iron Man #8 will tie directly into this year’s Hellfire Gala!
