Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Avengers Tech-On #1 (Marvel) – Marvel has been teaming up with various companies delivering new spins on their characters. This one delivers a “high tech” take that includes collectible figures available for order.

Batman ’89 #1 (DC Comics) – The classic film gets a new series continuing its wonderful world. Yeah nostalgia!

Big Apple Diaries (Roaring Book Press) – In this heartfelt diary-style graphic memoir, a young New Yorker doodles her way through middle school – until the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack leaves her wondering if she can ever be a kid again.

Bunny Mask #3 (AfterShock) – This horror series has been intriguing and the previous issue’s ending really caught us off guard as to where this series is going.

Campisi #1 (AfterShock) – A mafia hitman must take on a dragon who has encroached on their territory.

Count Draco Knuckleduster #1 (Scout Comics/Black Caravan) – The cosmic series has a classic Kirby vibe mixed with 70s psychedelics and we’re down for it.

Defenders #1 (Marvel) – The Defenders are a classic team and every new itteration is interesting. We’re intrigued to see what this latest version is like.

Hardware: Season One #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Milestone’s return has been solid and we want to see this world grow!

I Am Batman #0 (DC Comics) – John Ridley continues his vision for Batman!

Pennyworth #1 (DC Comics) – From television series to comic!

Rainbow Bridge (AfterShock/Seismic Press) – AfterShock moves into young reader territory with this graphic novel debut. Check out our review.

Run Book One (Abrams Comicarts) – The second series telling the amazing life of Congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis. It’s the next chapter in the history of civil rights.

Savage Circus #5 (Heavy Metal) – The series has been awesome carnage. It’s just over the top action and a hell of a lot of fun.

Unbelievable Unteens: World of Black Hammer #1 (Dark Horse Comics) – The world of Black Hammer spins out even more with this meta team superhero saga taking place between two different worlds.

Heavy Metal Celebrates 40 Years by Rocking this Limited Edition Custom Guitar

Heavy Metal Entertainment, Incendium, and Minarik Guitars have announced that they are teaming up to release a limited edition custom electric guitar to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary Heavy Metal film. The handmade guitars are available to order, in time for the anniversary of the film, released on August 7, 1981. Each Heavy Metal custom guitar will be made to order on a first come, first served basis for the remainder of 2021.

The custom instrument will be built by Minarik Guitars and features stunning airbrushed art of Taarna and more iconic scenes from the movie on the body of the guitar, while the fretboard inlay displays the Heavy Metal logo along with Taarna’s famous sword, channeling lightning down the length of the neck. The back of the guitar pays homage to the B-17 segment, looking like metal torn straight off one of the bomber planes with a bolted steel airbrushed effect, complete with bullet holes and missile artwork. Additional highlights and hidden accents can be seen when the instrument is placed under UV Black Light.

The artwork which covers the Heavy Metal custom guitar was designed by Matt Skiff and airbrushed by the legendary Craig Fraser, known for his work on Iron Maiden’s instruments. This marks the second brand collaboration for boutique workshop Minarik Guitars, following a sold-out release for the 50th anniversary of Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride. 13 electric guitars and 1 acoustic guitar were built to commemorate the popular attraction. For this project, Heavy Metal Entertainment is collaborating with Incendium as a premier licensing partner. Incendium is a lifestyle brand and production company known for its impressive slate of animation, comic book, toy, and video game projects.

The Heavy Metal custom guitar, which is priced at $19,666, will be available exclusively from http://www.incendium.online and features a dazzling array of craftsmanship. The instrument’s top, back, and sides are built from select Honduran mahogany checked for weight and resonance, and it features a 3 piece hard maple neck through body construction, with a figured Ebony fretboard and headstock plate which incorporate 100s of pieces of assorted inlay materials—including stone, mother of pearl, brass, aluminium, and acrylics—to depict Taarna’s war blade charged with lightning that strikes the entire length of the neck, ending with a blood red Heavy Metal logo. The unique contours of the body feature hand cut abalone trim and 5-ply binding, which frame the airbrushed artwork on the carved top.

Upon assembly, the Heavy Metal custom guitar is appointed with a MannMade intonatable wraparound bridge, precision machined from aircraft grade Aluminium, fitted with brass saddles and studs. This is fitted with a bone nut and gold Gotoh machine heads, whilst the 3-way toggle connects a DiMarzio AT-1 in the bridge and Gravity Storm in the neck, customized with gold bobbins and nickel poles, continuing the mixed hardware look. Clear speed knobs on the 2 volume and master tone knobs allow the graphics to shine through.

This limited edition custom guitar is built to order and only available to order this year, for the remainder of 2021. The guitar includes a hard case, certificate of authenticity, and a set of Heavy Metal branded plectrums from Dunlop in a matching tin.

Cold Dead War #1 Gets a New Printing and Variants

Heavy Metal has announced that Cold Dead War #1, the first issue of the WWII Horror-War zombie series, written by George C. Romero and illustrated by Germán Ponce, has sold out and is going back to press. Due to popular demand, Heavy Metal is releasing a second printing of the issue, featuring brand-new pinup variant covers by artists D•MINT•ID and Albert Alvarado. The new covers, taken straight from the B-17 war bunker, show off a bomb-straddling model in both her human and undead form.

Cold Dead War follows the zombie crew of a B-17 bomber who continue their mission to fight and kill enemies of American democracy and freedom, even long after they’ve already given their lives to the cause. In this epic Horror-War series set across the past, present and future, a freak occurrence reanimates an island of freshly killed soldiers in the wake of the Battle of Midway in World War 2. In Cold Dead War #1, Captain Howard hides away on a small farm, but he can’t shake the memories he has of his failed bombing mission in Japan during the war, which ended in disaster and death. He can’t hide from his past…especially when it’s not dead yet.

For this special second printing, Heavy Metal is offering a set of variant covers featuring the traditional bomber pinup and a non-traditional zombie version: both versions will be available topless, as only Heavy Metal would have the nerve to do.

All three variant covers, in both standard and virgin cover formats, are available for retailers to purchase from Heavy Metal Direct, and only Cover A will be solicited via Diamond Distributors. The topless version of Cover A will be wrapped in brown paper due to the adult content.

Individuals can also purchase their cover of choice from the Heavy Metal website and have an option to buy a bundle, which also includes issues #2-#4 and a discount code to use for the trade paperback pre-sale. Cold Dead War #1, with Cover A, will be available to purchase in stores on September 29, 2021, and Golden Apple will be exclusively selling the topless zombie variant cover.

Retailers can use the sign up form on Heavy Metal’s website to order this special second printing. The final order cut off for purchasing retailer issues is August 4, 2021. The in-store date is September 8, 2021.

Amazing Fantasy #1 (Marvel) – There’s some cachet when it comes to the title of this series so we want to see what Marvel brings to the table with this series which brings together classic versions of popular characters.

Barbaric #2 (Vault Comics) – The first issue caught us off guard. It took the classic barbarian type story and delivered a nice twist to it. Add in great art and this is a series we’re excited to read more of.

Black Beacon #1 (Heavy Metal) – An intergalactic space station sounds great to go to, it sounds like utopia. But, when Niko gets there she finds it’s anything but.

Black Widow #9 (Marvel) – The series has been a blast with every issue mixing humor and action. One of the consistently fun Marvel comics on the shelf right now.

BRZRKR #4 (BOOM! Studios) – The series has been surprisingly good so far. While it delivers bloody action, it also is a fascinating exploration of its character B and the destruction he’s delivered through his lifetimes.

Groo Meets Tarzan #1 (Dark Horse) – Groo is always entertaining and this crossover has so much potential. We’re excited to see what these two properties together are like.

I Am Not Starfire (DC Comics) – The highly anticipated graphic novel about Mandy, the superhero Starfire’s daughter.

Icon & Rocket: Season One #1 (DC Comics/Milestone) – Milestone launched with a fantastic debut and we’re excited to see more and this new take on this iconic duo.

The Last Book You’ll Ever Read #1 (Vault Comics) – Cullen Bunn’s writing so we’re interested in checking it out just for that. A hit book is being blamed for violence and bloodshed around the world and the writer is determined to conduct a book tour.

Lucy in the Sky (First Second) – Lucy discovers her father’s collection of Beatles records and is inspired to form an all-girl rock band.

Mirka Andolfo’s Sweet Paprika #1 (Image Comics) – Mirka Andolfo is one of the hot creators out there right now so any debut gets a look from us.

The Other History of the DC Universe #5 (DC Comics/DC Black Label) – The series started with Jefferson Pierce so it’s fitting that it ends with a focus on his daughter Anissa Pierce.

Runes #1 (Source Point Press) – A prisoner escapes after a shipwreck and must fight for his life in hopes of revenge.

Shadow Doctor #5 (AfterShock) – The series has been amazing with every issue. It’s the true story of a Black doctor in the 1930s who has to turn to Al Capone to get his medical practice up and running.

Skybound X #4 (Image Comics/Skybound) – Each issue has been a fantastic highlight of what Skybound has to offer including debuts that are sure to make the issues sought after.

Static: Season One #2 (DC Comics/Milestone) – The first issue was fantastic and was a hell of a debut for Milestone. We loved the first issue which had a fresh youthful feel about it and we’re fascinated to see where it goes after the previous issue’s ending.

Swamp God #1 (Heavy Metal) – At the end of the Civil War, Confederate soldiers call upon ultimate evil to save the South but then must team with Union soldiers to survive the horror they’ve unleashed.

United States of Captain America #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a bit mixed in quality but at its core is a very interesting exploration of Captain America and what the character stands for and symbolizes.

The Boulet Brothers Take Over Heavy Metal Magazine For Special Halloween Issue

Heavy Metal Entertainment has announced that The Boulet Brothers, the legendary horror hosts, producers, drag icons, and creators of reality competition TV series The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, will be taking over this year’s Halloween issue of Heavy Metal Magazine.

Dracmorda and Swanthula Boulet host this spooky spectacular issue, guiding readers into dark and demented worlds with their own scary stories as well as horror tales created by Steve Orlando and pro wrestler Danhausen; RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Katya Zamolodchikova, Alaska Thunderfuck 5000, Yvie Oddly; American Horror Story director Axelle Carolyn; Steve Foxe and artist Isaac Goodhart. The gorgeous and glamorous cover is created by artist Dan Quintana. 

The special issue will be available on October 27.

Magma Comix and Heavy Metal Announce Intrusion from Ethan Sacks and Marco Lorenzana

Intrusion is a parable about the consequences of misguided prejudice and hate. The new one-shot comic is coming from writer/co-creator Ethan Sacks, artist/co-creator Marco Lorenzana, colorist Erick Arciniega, and letterer Jaime Martinez. It features a cover by Daniel Govar and a variant cover by Marco Lorenzana. Coming from Heavy Metal imprint Magma Comix, the horror comic comes to comic shelves on September 22, 2021.

Set deep in the Louisiana bayou in the late 1760s, INTRUSION tells the story of the Broussard family, Acadians seeking a new life after being cast out of Canada by the British and having lived the last several years in indentured servitude. They arrive in Louisiana desperate for a second chance. Settling on a patch of remote land bordered by a “cursed” swamp, Jacques will do anything to defend his family’s homestead…even if that puts them on a collision course with a creature that dwells in the bayou. Conceived as a one-shot horror comic from creators Ethan Sacks and Marco Lorenzana, the story makes use of the flipbook format in an innovative way to tell the story from two very different perspectives—the human and the monster. The second story starts at the “flipped” back cover and both the first and second stories merge on a double-page spread in the middle. 

The patriarch of the Broussard family will stop at nothing to defend his family from the horrors that lurk in the swamp—and neither will the Grunch!
