Animorphs Vol. 3 The Encounter is interesting in its focus on mostly Tobias and his being trapped

When Tobias and his friends were given the power to morph, they were also given an important warning: Never stay in a morph for more than two hours. But Tobias broke the time limit, and now he’s trapped in the body of a hawk — forever.

When he discovers an important Yeerk secret, Tobias knows he has to do everything in his power to destroy it. But to do so, he’ll have to contend with a part of himself that’s wrestling for dominion. A part that isn’t human.

For Tobias, the fight against the Yeerks is more pressing than ever — not just for humankind, but for his own humanity.

Animorphs Vol. 2 The Visitor is a solid second chapter but doesn’t really stand on its own

Rachel is still reeling from the news that Earth is secretly under attack by parasitic aliens, the Yeerks. Now she and her friends are the planet’s only defense — five kids who, purely by chance, stumbled onto a downed spacecraft and were given the power to morph into any animals they touch.

The team’s best lead is their assistant principal, Mr. Chapman, who is the human host to a high-ranking Yeerk official. It’s not much, but Rachel’s always been a daredevil, and she volunteers to infiltrate Chapman’s home.

Rachel is tough. She’s fearless. But what she finds inside may be more than even she can handle.

Animorphs Vol. 1 The Invasion is a pretty solid introduction to the world and characters

Sometimes weird things happen to people. Ask Jake. He could tell you about the night he and his friends saw a strange light in the sky that seemed to be heading right for them. That was the night five normal kids learned that humanity is under a silent attack — and were given the power to fight back. Now Jake, Rachel, Cassie, Tobias, and Marco can transform into some of the most dangerous creatures on Earth. And they must use that power to outsmart an evil greater than anything the world has ever seen. . . .

Sea Legs is an interesting graphic novel about setting sail and leaving everything behind as a kid

Janey’s family is about to set sail for the adventure of a lifetime! The only problem? Janey must leave her school, her life, her best friend, the entire country behind for new adventures ― coral reefs, colorful markets, and new cultures. Life at sea is exhilarating, but there’s a major downside: when you’re raising anchor every few days with sights on a new harbor, it’s almost impossible to make new friends.

Finally, Janey meets the cool and aloof Astrid ― a fellow boat kid who’s equally starved for friendship. But Astrid can be a challenging friend to navigate, and beyond that, hurricane season has only just begun . . . .

At turns laugh-out-loud hilarious and heartbreakingly poignant, this stunning middle grade graphic memoir charts both the turbulence and joys of growing up.

Saphie The One-Eyed Cat Vol. 1 has its moments but overall misses the mark

What exactly does a one-eyed cat do all day? Well, there’s running, knocking things over, scratching things you’re not supposed to, terrorizing your brothers, messing with your owner, stealing food, and generally causing mayhem left, right, and center!

Saphie the One-Eyed Cat is a hilarious look at the life of a cat that knows what she wants — and what she wants is to mess around!

Fresh Start is a great graphic novel for kids who might have to move around a lot

Ollie Herisson’s dad is a diplomat, which means her family moves around a lot. She has already lived in Singapore, Korea, France, and the United States. When Ollie starts at a new school, she doesn’t worry about making a good impression because she knows that when her family inevitably moves again, she’ll get a fresh start somewhere else. A complete reset. It doesn’t matter if her classmates think she’s weird for pretending that she lives in the world of an imagined anime, or if she makes an enemy out of the most popular girl in her class, or ifshe does something hugely embarrassing! And it definitely doesn’t matter that all her mom wants is for Ollie to be more of a proper Thai daughter.

But after moving from Germany to Virginia and having a mortifying first day at her new school, Ollie is shocked to learn that her parents are going to buy a house so that Ollie and her sister, Cat, can finish grade school in one place. Can Ollie figure out how to both be herself and make real friends when she can’t run away from her life?

Gale Galligan is back this January with their semi-autobiographical graphic novel, Fresh Start

On January 7, 2025, Gale Galligan is back with a brand-new graphic novel, Fresh Start.

Galligan is the author of Freestyle, and jumps back into comics with this semi-autobiographical graphic novel. Based on Gale’s experiences growing up with a parent whose job meant relocating all over the world, Fresh Start channels a deeply personal (and deeply funny) story meant as a compassionate companion for children facing moves, big changes, and figuring out exactly who they are.

It doesn’t matter if her classmates think she’s weird for pretending that she lives in the world of an imagined anime, or if she makes an enemy out of the most popular girl in her class, or if she just does something hugely embarrassing!

Published by Graphix, Fresh Start is intended for readers ages 8-12.
