Marvel and Games Workshop Announce Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar

A legendary Space Marine Chapter Master of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Marneus Calgar leads his elite Ultramarines against  humanity’s greatest threats and has had his dark past shrouded in mystery…until now. This October, writer Kieron Gillen and artist Jacen Burrows will unite to tell Marneus Calgar’s never-before-told origin story – from his beginnings on the world of Nova Thulium, his campaigns in the Black Crusades, and to the unfolding mystery of the Black Altar as a deadly threat from his past reemerges to threaten the present of the Ultramar system.

Gillen, a veteran player of the Warhammer tabletop miniature wargame, can barely contain his enthusiasm for the series.

I am venerable enough to have bought Rogue Trader in 1987. Since then, I like to think every hastily dry-brushed Necron, every badly edge-highlighted Marine, every ignored Harlequin (as painting Motley petrified me) has prepared me for writing the first Warhammer comics for Marvel. If I said, ‘Getting to explore the roots of Marneus Calgar and setting the stage for Marvel’s Warhammer comics is a dream come true,’ I would be betraying everything this grim future should be since ‘dream’ implies the possibility of hope.  But getting to do this is the sort of thing Slaanesh would wave in my direction if she wanted me coming over to the tentacle-y side.

Or to translate for those less indoctrinated in 40K. I’m excited.

This never-before-told tale will be essential reading for 40K aficionados, as well as the perfect primer to the Warhammer 40,000 universe for those new to it. It will also be but the first foray into the larger darkness that is coming from Games Workshop and Marvel

Cubicle 7 has announced that the PDF for Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay: Wrath & Glory is finished! You can pre-order your copy of the book here and get hold of the PDF straight away!

The new PDF is being added to the existing one on DriveThruRPG so that those who purchased the previous Rulebook can access it.

The rulebook highlights the various factions vying for supremacy with expanded backgrounds, each of which provides a bonus during gameplay.

Archetypes are presented in an easy-to-read, single-page format. There’s an emphasis for guiding new players through making characters or helping gamemasters create NPCs.

The Rules have been reviewed, edited, playtested, with a focus on clarity and quick understanding.

Games Workshop Returns to Comics with Marvel

Games Workshop has had a spotty history with comics with runs that come and go and rotate publishers. Comics based on GW properties are returning as the company is teaming up with Marvel for a whole new era. Details as far as properties and what creative teams have not been announced.

GW, with popular games like Warhammer 40k, Age of Sigmar, and more, has deep and rich game fluff ripe for use in greater media. The game publisher is considered to have untapped potential which is finally getting the spotlight. On top of the comic announcement, a television show has been announced based on one of the characters from Warhammer 40k.

This isn’t the first time GW properties have wound up in Marvel comics, though previously it wasn’t so legal.

Comics began being published through Black Library, some of which were award-winning. BOOM! Studios picked up the license in 2006 and lost it about mid-2009. Titan Comics began publishing comics in 2016 which ended in 2018.

New comics come to shelves autumn 2020.
