Fantasy Flight’s Update on the Star Wars: Force and Destiny Beta

SWFbeta_book_leftFantasy Flight Games has posted an update about the beta test for their Star Wars: Force and Destiny roleplaying game. Early copies of the game were on sale at Gen Con and the idea is the community will provide feedback for the game.

Fantasy Flight is holding off that feedback for a bit. The company is going to wait until copies of the beta are available in stores before they start posting updates, so they can get opinions and feedback from them as well.

The beta process of the game will run for eight to ten weeks depending on feedback and the changes that need to be made. You can discuss the game with others in a dedicated forum. You can also submit feedback to them directly at forceanddestinybeta@fantasyflightgames.com.

Throughout the process, the company will also be posting updates and additions they’re considering after reviewing the feedback. The first beta update should be released September 9th.

Fantasy Flight Opens up X-Wing Mission Control

mission control screenFantasy Flight allows anyone to recreate the dramatic space battles in Star Wars with their X-Wing miniatures game. You’re able to control squads of Rebel or Imperial ships and the game allows for tons of customization and a wide range of options.

That individual customization is now going community wide with the announced beta release of X-Wing Mission Control. The free online community resource allows individuals to design and share their own missions for X-Wing.

Coordinate a daring assault run along the Death Star trench, confront the Rebel fleet outside of Endor, or dodge asteroids in pursuit of the Millennium Falcon. X-Wing Mission Control’s custom editor allows you to easily create any play scenario you can imagine, whether it’s drawn from the Star Wars trilogy or completely unique.

Simply select the size of your play area and define the ships you wish to permit. You can create mission-specific squad-building rules, or you can identify any number of specific ships and upgrades. If you use Mission Control to track your collection, it will even identify any mission components not included in your X-Wing collection.

After you’ve created your scenario you’re able to share it with others by publishing them to the site. Other individuals are then able to download the missions, play them, and then vote for their favorites.

The center is in beta, and does not work on mobile devices. It is compatible with Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, and Fantasy Flight is looking for feedback, including technical issues via their forums.

Gen Con 2013: Fantasy Flight Games Shows Off Two Large Additions to Star Wars X-Wing

You didn’t need to stand in the long line to check out some of the coolest items Fantasy Flight Games brought with them to Gen Con 2013. The game publisher had numerous current and upcoming games and expansions on display as you waited to enter. Two of those items are some rather large ships for their popular Star Wars X-Wing miniature game. Both the GR-75 Rebel Transport and Escort ($59.95) and Tantive IV (Blockade Runner) ($89.95) where out on display for the world to see but won’t be released until in early 2014.  The Rebel Transport and Escort will also feature a Jek Porkins pilot card.

You can check out pics below of the two miniatures which are massive compared to other releases for the game.

Fantasy Flight was a hot booth to get into, with long lines throughout the convention. A new policy of having to wait in line to enter the booth to just browse product was instituted this year to keep up with the demand and prevent a crush of crowd in the booth.

Gen Con 2013: Fantasy Flight brings back Diskwars with Warhammer

PIC_4220Do you remember Diskwars? If you’re like me, I’m sure it doesn’t bring back great memories. Fantasy Flight Games has decided to ressurect the disk play mechanic with the release of Warhammer: Diskwars which will retail for $39.95. The new game is “a fast-paced, tactical battle game for 2-4 players that can be played in an hour or less.”  The new game is based on that “classic” which was designed by Christian T. Petersen and Tom Jolly with an updated setting of Games Workshop‘s Warhammer world.

There is a slight difference though. The original Diskwars was a collectible disk game focused on armies and not much personality. The new Warhammer: Diskwars has been updated and features flexible rules for more of a “hero-centric army building.” The collectible aspect has been shelved as well for the initial release with everything you need to play for two players in the initial set.

The game debuted this past weekend at Gen Con 2013 with demos being run at the Fantasy Flight booth. The game features disks which represent individuals or large units and each disk has statistics and some have special abilities. To move you flip the disk over and over on its end affected by terrain and other disks. When you land on another disk you stop and “pin” the desk beneath. The one beneath can’t move and the two then have to fight each other.

PIC_4219Having played the original game, the mechanic was fun a few plays in but quickly wore out it’s welcome. The game was somewhat popular with sales plummeting months after the release (at least at the shop I worked in at the time).

Since this new game will be set in the Warhammer world, you can expect characters, creatures and armies from that set including Orcs, Chaos, High Elves and the Empire. The initial set will include twenty-four command cards, five terrain cards, five scenario cards and more than sixty disks.

For those that kept theirs, now’s a chance to dust off the old discs collecting dust.
