Now the event returns bigger and better for 2017—and with a new name— Coast to Coast Comic Con, scheduled for participating comic book shops across the country on Saturday, March 4th, 2017.

Promoters of the event, In Store Convention Kickoff, announced that they’ll be partnering once again with Diamond Comic Distributors for promotion and store support of the event, as well as working with pop-culture show organizers, ReedPOP. Coast to Coast Comic Con will be broadcasting live on location at one of ReedPOP’s premier shows, Emerald City Comicon in Seattle.

Exciting changes have been made from last year’s presentation, with the opportunity for more guests and some never-attempted live events in the works. Full details of the event, as well as news regarding participating publishers and talent, will be revealed in early 2017 and as the March 4th date approaches.

Last year’s event featured eight-hours of broadcasting, appearing exclusively in more than 400 participating stores in 9 countries and on 5 continents, with featured presentations from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, IDW, Valiant, Dynamite, Boom! Studios, Diamond Select, and Zenescope and appearances by TMNT co-creator, Kevin Eastman, DC Comics co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan Didio, as well as Civil War II writer Brian Michael Bendis and power couple Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction.

Emerald City Comicon Being Sued for Not Paying Volunteers

Emerald City ComiconThe use of non-paid volunteers and interns by conventions and businesses is a much debated topic and the legality of it all can be a fine line. There’s currently a lawsuit concerning judges for Magic: The Gathering over the issue. A new lawsuit has been filed by an individual concerning volunteers at Emerald City Comicon concerning the 2014 and 2015 shows. In 2015 the show was purchased by ReedPop and the convention promoter pays employees. The claimant seeking a Class Action designation citing there are at least 250 current and former volunteers “not paid for work performed.”

The ability to volunteer is competitive and those who do entered a contract with the convention making the lawsuit not quite as clear cut. There is compensation in the form of access to the convention. The contract doesn’t get ECCC off the hook, they could be found in violation of labor laws even with it.

Singh Rekhi, the attorney behind the case said:

In Washington, the base is that if you are an employer, you have to pay the minimum wage. We don’t believe that someone should be able to profit off unpaid labor, even if it’s something people love to do.

Some conventions get around labor issues as nonprofits where the rules aren’t as strict.

The impact of this case will have ramifications and have ripple effects throughout the convention circuit.

ECCC 2016: Kurt Cobain Graphic Novel, Who Killed Kurt Cobain?, Coming To IDW

Who Killed Kurt CobainThe most iconic singer/songwriter of his generation, Kurt Cobain left behind a phenomenal body of work, legions of fans, and a mystery… a final letter addressed to “Boddah.”

Now, award-winning creator Nicolas Otero brings the story of this note to life in the forthcoming original graphic novel Who Killed Kurt Cobain?

Based on the French novel, Le Roman de Boddah by Heloise Guay de Bellissen, this adaptation – a work of fiction – recounts real-life events from Cobain’s life, as narrated by his childhood imaginary friend, Boddah.

Through the eyes of Boddah, readers get a front row seat to the highs and lows of one of music’s most influential voices like they’ve never experienced before. Trace the arc of modern rock’s greatest icon from the dark clubs of Seattle to the bright lights of the world stage… and all the angst, horror, and thrill that came with that ride in this captivating graphic tale.

IDW Publishing made the announcement of the graphic novel in the city that Cobain called home during Emerald City Comicon in Seattle.

Who Killed Kurt Cobain? arrives in book stores this October.

ECCC 2016: Evanier and Aragonés Deliver Groo: Fray of the Gods

Announced at Emerald City Comicon, Dark Horse will deliver a new ongoing Groo series: Groo: Fray of the Gods.

This twelve-issue limited series features a tale told by the same award-winning creative team as always: Sergio Aragonés and Mark Evanier, with Tom Luth coloring and Stan Sakai on the lettering pen.

The gods did not bless Groo with brains, only with the ability to battle. Now, they themselves are in conflict over the spirit and future of mankind…and it is Groo who becomes the pawn (unwitting, of course) in their war. If the future of humanity depends on the Wanderer—we’re all in a lot of trouble.

Groo: Fray of the Gods #1 is on sale July 20, 2016.

ECCC 2016: Comedy Central’s Brickleberry Heads to Comics

Following up on the success of Loren Bouchard and Bento Box Entertainment‘s Bob’s Burgers comes the continuation of another animated series in comic book form in Brickleberry!

First premiered in 2012, Brickleberry was a comedic take on the lives of park rangers working in the fictional national park of the same name. The series ran for three seasons and chronicled the daily misadventures of Brickleberry National Park’s longtime ranger Woody Johnson and a supporting cast of federal employees as they bumble through their daily duties.

Picking up where the series finale left off in 2015, Dynamite will work directly with the show’s creators Waco O’Guin and Roger Black for the official continuation of the series, featuring the same off-beat humor and backwoods politics for which it’s known.

Brickleberry arrives at your local comic shop this June from Dynamite and Bento Box Entertainment.
