Drawn & Quarterly will be at this weekend’s Small Press Expo and you’ll be able to fine them at booth W51-W54 in the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Rd. They’re bringing fresh-off-the-press copies of SPX guests Adrian Tomine’s New York Drawings and Chris Ware’s Multi-Story Building Model. In all, the publisher will have six authors signing at SPX, including Tomine, Ware, Daniel Clowes, Kevin Huizenga, Brian Ralph, and Dan Zettwoch.

SPX Hosts a Legendary Roster of Guests this Weekend

Small Press ExpoSmall Press Expo is this weekend and will feature a historic lineup of guests. SPX 2012 boasts a murderer’s row of talent, with an indie comix fan’s dream guest list featuring—for the first time ever at a single event—Chris Ware, Françoise Mouly, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, Daniel Clowes, and Adrian Tomine.

This legendary group of creators has collectively won fifteen Ignatz Awards since the festival prize was instituted at 1997’s inaugural SPX.  Among the nominees for the 2012 Ignatz Awards, Los Bros Hernandez are represented in three categories (Outstanding Artist, Outstanding Story, and Outstanding Series).  The 2012 Ignatz Awards will be presented Saturday at 9:30 P.M.

Limited edition posters by Chris Ware, as well as a tote bag of Daniel Clowes art designed by Alvin Buenaventura, will be available at the SPX Sales Table. There will be a special set of all of the posters, flyers, banners and program guide cover signed by the artists in an edition of 25, as well as a poster of the badges designed by Jaime Hernandez, also for sale.

In addition,  appearing at this years show are such honored guests as Michael DeForge, Lille Carre, Becky Dreistadt, Dean Haspiel, and Nick Abadzis.  Guests will be participating in a compelling lineup of programming taking place both Saturday and Sunday, featuring several “spotlight” sessions on individual creators, in addition to panel discussions and special presentations.

SPX is also pleased to announce that publishers NoBrow and Koyama Press will be making their first appearances at SPX 2012, joining longtime SPX participating publishers such as Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, and Oni Press in showcasing their latest and greatest books.

Small Press Expo announces the Enoch Pratt Free Library as the recipient of the 2012 SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program

The Small Press Expo (SPX) has announced the gift of $5000 in graphic novels to the Enoch Pratt Free Library of Baltimore, Maryland. In a ceremony held this past Tuesday in the boardroom of the main branch of the Pratt Library in downtown Baltimore, SPX Executive Director Warren Bernard presented CEO Dr. Carla Hayden and members of her staff with the books.

Dr. Carla Hayden commented on the gift:

We are so honored and delighted that Small Press Expo has chosen the Pratt Library as this year’s recipient of their Graphic Novel Gift. It’s important to emphasize that reading is fun. Sometimes students get so busy they forget that there’s more to reading than just school texts.

This years gift of over 240 books comprising 40 different titles were chosen by the Pratt Library Collection Management Department and will be sent out to all the branches in the system.

SPX would like to thank Fantagraphics, Drawn & Quarterly, Adhouse Books and Top Shelf for their aid in supporting this important program.

The SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program is an expansion of the philanthropic and charitable endeavors that are part of its corporate charter, and is in addition to SPX’s annual support to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. The targets of this program are public and academic library systems in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area as selected by the Small Press Expo.

The goals of this new program are:

  • Facilitate the availability of graphic novels to readers of all ages utilizing public and school libraries.
  • Promote learning and literacy through the availability of graphic novels at local libraries.
  • Provide library systems with additional resources by which they can purchase graphic novels and comics.

This years special bookplate contains art by artist and illustrator Adrian Tomine, whose work graces the covers of The New Yorker. The special bookplate were placed on all of the books donated by SPX. Small Press Expo announces debut works from Lilli Carre, Keith Knight, Sammy Harkham, Michael DeForge, Adrian Tomine and over 140 others at SPX 2012

The Small Press Expo (SPX) is the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons. It’s now wonder then that so many new independent comics will debut at the festival. To find out what to expect, you can head to http://www.spxpo.com/debuts. But, there’s over 140 debuts at this year’s show, the most in show history. They represent a diverse range of cartooning styles, narrative approaches, topics, audiences and cartoonists, from some of the biggest names in the indie comics field.

Here’s a few of the comics you can expect:

Lilli Carre will be back at SPX for the first time in over five years with her new compilation Heads or Tails, from Fantagraphics.

Keith Knight’s social commentary strip K Chronicles, has a new compendium of material not available in other collections, titled The Incredible Cuteness of Being.

Sammy Harkham debuts his new book from Picturebox, Everything Together: Collected Stories.

Adrian Tomine’s New York Drawings from Drawn & Quarterly collects and annotates his illustration work, including drawings for The New Yorker and other magazines.

Michael DeForge series of self-anthologized works continues with the debut of  Lose #4 from Koyama Press.

All of the above creators will be at SPX 2012 to sign their latest works.

Adrian Tomine’s illustrations and comics have appeared for more than a decade in the pages (and on the cover) of The New Yorker. Instantly recognizable for their deceptively simple and evocative style, these images have garnered the attention of the New Yorker’s readership and the approbation of such venerable institutions as the Art Directors Club and American Illustration.

New York Drawings is a loving homage to the city that Tomine, a West Coast transplant, has called home for the past seven years. D+Q to Publish Tavi Gevinson’s Rookie Yearbook One This September

Tavi Gevinson started her personal blog, Style Rookie in 2008, when she was 11 years old. It was a place where, from the confines of her bedroom in the suburbs, she could write about personal style and chronicle the development of her own. Within two years, the blog was averaging 50,000 hits per day. Soon fashion designers were flying her around the world to attend, and write about, fashion shows, and to be a guest of honor at their parties.

Soon Tavi’s interests grew beyond fashion, into culture and art and, especially, feminism. In September 2011, when she was 15, she launched Rookie a website for girls like her: teenagers who are interested in fashion and beauty but also in dissecting the culture around them through a uniquely teen-girl lens. Rookie broke 1 million page views within its first six days.

Rookie Yearbook One will collect articles, interviews, photo editorials, and illustrations from the highly praised and hugely popular online magazine. In its first year, Rookie has established a large, inclusive, international community of avid readers. SDCC 2012 – D+Q to Publish Spiegelman & Deforge

Drawn & Quarterly has acquired North American and UK rights to CO-MIX: A Retrospective of Comics, Graphics, and Scraps, by legendary, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman. To be released in Spring 2013, this expanded English version of the Flammarion bilingual edition will feature full-page reproductions of Spiegelman’s artwork, comics, and preliminary sketches. Spiegelman has been a leader of, and an inspiration for, alternative comics artists throughout the past three decades, and in CO-MIX: A Retrospective of Comics, Graphics, and Scraps, readers will be able to trace the evolution of this multifaceted artist throughout his storied career.

CO-MIX began as a museum retrospective detailing Spiegelman’s lifelong involvement with comics. The exhibit was in conjunction with his Angouleme Presidency and later traveled to Centre Pompidou in Paris. In late September the show will open in the Ludwig museum in Cologne, Germany, and 2013 the show will go to the Vancouver Art Gallery and then travel to the Jewish Museum in New York City. CO-MIX will be distributed in the U.S. by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, in Canada by Raincoast Books, and in the UK by PGUK. Matthew Bloomgarden of the Wylie Agency represented Spiegelman in negotiations in coordination with Flammarion.

Born in Stockholm in 1948, Art Spiegelman was the first comics artist to win the Pulitzer Prize, which he received for his ground-breaking bestseller, Maus. He co-edited Raw and his comics have appeared in the New Yorker, New York Times, Playboy, and Harper’s. He has been named one of the 100 Most Influential People by Time Magazine, elected to the Art Director Club’s Hall of Fame, made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 2005 (promoted to Officier in 2012), and played himself on The Simpsons. In 2011, Spiegelman was elected President of the Angouleme International Comics Festival and awarded the Grand Prix of the Festival. He lives in New York City.

Drawn & Quarterly has also acquired world rights to Ant Colony by Doug Wright Award-winning cartoonist Michael DeForge. Ant Colony has been serialized biweekly since Fall 2011. With his brash, confident, undulating artwork, DeForge’s audacious entry into the North American independent comics scene is like no other cartoonist of his generation.

Ant Colony follows various members of an ant colony – a couple who are unexpectedly given custody of an orphaned baby red ant, a young ant who gains prophetic, apocalyptic visions after ingesting a mystical earthworm and a detective who becomes dissatisfied with his place in the colony. Various tragedies befall the group, including a series of murders, attacks from other insects, conflict with neighboring red ants, and the burning ray of a magnifying glass.

DeForge was born in 1987 and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. After a few years of experimenting with short strips and zines, he created Lose #1, his first full-length comic, which won in the Best Emerging Talent category at the 2010 Doug Wright Awards. He has since published two more installments of Lose (all published by Koyama Press) and his comics have appeared in The Believer, Maissoneuve, Smoke Signal, Cold Heat and the Adventure Time comic book series.
