Diamond Decides to help Small Publishers

Bookmark and Share

Diamond, the major comic book distributor, has modified their purchasing policy.  They had implemented a rather unpopular decision of making a minimum order threshold for products.  If an item offered didn’t make this minimum the orders would be canceled.  Well, that policy has been changed.

In response to retailer feedback, Diamond is modifying its guidelines for canceling retailers’ initial orders for underperforming products and merchandise in PREVIEWS.

In the first quarter of 2009, in an effort to reduce the number of underperforming products in PREVIEWS, Diamond implemented higher minimums for purchase orders. At that time, Diamond also began canceling retailers’ initial orders for affected products.

Now, however, having had almost a year to fine-tune the processes for choosing catalog offerings, Diamond will place a purchase order with a publisher or vendor to fill retailers’ initial orders for any products offered in PREVIEWS, even if those orders fall below Diamond’s minimum purchase order levels. This policy takes effect with product solicited in the January, 2010 PREVIEWS.

Chomicron – November Comic Sales Stats

Chomicron has poured over Diamond Distributors and crunched the data for the month of November, and the month was good.  On the backs of some solid books and promotions comic unit sales are up 7% compared to the same time last year and dollar sales are up 12% for the top 300 comics.

Blackest Night #6 Leaks

That noise you hear is the collective industry saying “told you so.”  In October at the Diamond Retailer Summit, DC comics announced it would be releasing Blackest Night #6 the last week in December in what was supposed to be a skip week.  However, they would send the books out a week early with big stickers saying with the street date clearly laid out.  I think it was pretty obvious it would leak and the street date would be broken.

Well, it happened pretty quickly.  Early this morning, pages and spoilers from Blackest Night #6 appeared across the internet including the CBR Forums, Penny Arcade, writer Geoff Johns own message boards at ComicBloc.com and the official DC Comics message boards.  The images have since been taken down by DC’s request.

The series writer Geoff Johns had this to say:

I’m glad people are excited about the book.

The issue has also hit Torrent sites within 24 hours of it’s shipping in lower than usual quality scans.

Really this was an experiment by Diamond and DC to see if such a release would work and I could of told them it wouldn’t.  I think the bigger question is why should I go to my comic shop to pick up one comic (other than I have nothing better to do).  This should of just been released this week.
